EVERTON V LIVERPOOL SAT 9th September

TIM CAHILL has stoked up the flames ahead of Saturday's Merseyside derby by claiming Liverpool will be "wary" of visiting in-form Everton. CLICK (http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/0100news/tm_objectid=17675091&method=full&siteid=50061&headline=cahill--derby-rivals-are--wary--name_page.html)

Seven points from the opening three games, a blistering start to his Goodison career for Andy Johnson and a virtually fully-fit squad - it is easy to understand why there is a real sense of optimism amongst Blues for this derby clash.

The 204th Merseyside derby has been made all the more fascinating by the fact it is being played so early in the season, with both sides in good form and looking to put together a strong start to the campaign.

Goodison will be crammed for this early kick-off - and Blues are feeling more confident than they have been since the fateful derby of December 2004, when a Lee Carsley strike maintained a fine run of form and ultimately proved crucial in securing a fourth place finish at the expense of the club's rivals from across Stanley Park.

Then the side had hit upon an effective system and were securing points with unerring regularity.

We are still only a few weeks into the new season but there is a similar sense that David Moyes has got a nice balance in his side.

Indeed, following years of banter between the two sets of rival fans in which the Blues were labelled as a long-ball side, thanks to the presence in the ranks of Duncan Ferguson, it is now the men from Anfield with tall targetmen such as Peter Crouch and Dirk Kuyt to aim for.

By contrast, Everton's football in the 2-0 victory over Tottenham at White Hart Lane underlined the determination of this side to utilise the ball-playing skills of midfield men such as Mikel Arteta, Leon Osman and Tim Cahill.

It adds an intriguing dimension to a fixture that has caused more consternation than celebration for the Blue half of the city.

It was in the mid-90s that the Toffees were in confident mood and recording memorable successes such as the Andrei Kanchelskis-inspired 2-1 victory at Anfield.

A decade on and the highlights in recent seasons have been provided by the December 11, 2004 win at Goodison and the superb performance from Nigel Martyn earlier that year which led to a 0-0 draw away from home.

The recent record needs improving - this could be the weekend!
