I'm reading a book by Paul Gogarty called 'The Coast Road'.
The author travels 3,000 miles in a motorhome around the coast of England, exploring coastal communities.
It is a well written and often humorous account of England today.

I mention it because Paul Gogarty lived in Litherland.
He doesn't say if he was born there, but he states that between the ages of 9 and 11 he lived in Malaysia and Hong Kong, (army family) - but in 1961 he turned up for his first day at Waterloo Grammar school. He has memories of his mum working at the nearby Richmond Sausage Works. The family lived off Hawthorn rd. He describes his memories of Litherland and the dock area.

Although he currently lives in London I'm assuming that he may be from a Liverpool family - it's not clear though, as he says that their house off Hawthorn rd was 'MQ' (married quarters)- so they could have just been posted there, but anyway he is an excellent travel writer. I've read another of his books called 'The Water Road'.
He writes for The Daily Telegraph, The Sunday Times, The Guardian, and Daily Express, and has won awards for travel writing.
