The man was sitting at his computer in Dallas, Texas, when he clicked on to a live camera link for the Mathew Street website. Expecting to see pictures of the city's famous Beatles quarter, he was astonished to see three intruders breaking into Blacks outdoor sports store. He watched as they propped a ladder on the wall outside the store and smashed a window on Button Street to clamber inside. Kev 08-26-2006, 09:14 AM I was amazed!! Members of the public in other countries are catching our crims. Maybe we should employ members of the public to watch over the CCTV from their own living rooms!! Max 08-26-2006, 12:22 PM Haha, what luck blacks had. Bit weird the police just believed the American. Kev 08-29-2006, 03:55 PM The story has been featured across the world. Researchers on the Ellen De-Generes TV show in Los Angeles have been trying to track the man down for an interview. Meanwhile, in his home city, it was reported how "Brits nab thieves with a little help from a friend in Dallas". The Dallas Morning News described the mystery internet watcher as an "international cyber sleuth". It added: "City officials trained on-street cameras on the site as the blaggers bolted with thousands of dollars in clothing towards a getaway car. "Bobbies dashed to the scene and arrested them 'fairly sharp-ish' city officials said." Merseyside inspector Karl Kneale has appealed for the man to get back in touch so officers can tell him about arrests at the scene. The man's identity is still a mystery. But over the weekend one American correspondent on the Mathew Street webcam message-board, who identified himself simply as Gary, said he was the one who tipped off police. The burglary has also been reported as far afield as New Zealand, and has attracted attention from China and Canada, where one internet user likened the mystery good Samaritan to the hero of blockbuster film Patriot Games. Messages of thanks have also come from Liverpool people. One said: "I hate anyone who gets our city a bad name, and well done to the police for responding fast."
