I thought this would be a good place were we could talk about recent or current holidays we have been or are about to go on,it could be somewhere were we could seek advice and pick each others brains for future holidays. It would be interesting to see where our ex pats holiday and where they would recommend,I do realise not everyone can afford to holiday but I'm sure you can still get involved and talk about past holidays.I went to Florida in March has anyone else ever been? Get involved to keep the forum ticking over.

Some of you may have noticed my absense over the past few days. I've been on a short break to Center Parcs (http://www.centerparcs.co.uk/index.jsp) in The Lakes with the family.

Very nice and chilled. I took a few snaps which I'd like to share:

I've been to all the theme parks, well the Disney ones,Busch Gardens,Seaworld,Universal studios.I've also been to the Everglades on an airboat ride and absolutely loved the nature part of the whole experience,I find it bizarre that you can get so close to Alligators,Raccoons,Manitees,Ospreys and Dolphins if you're lucky in their natural environment.Where about in Florida are you?I always stay on International Drive because I never take the car option and everything that you need is on your doorstep,I hope to go back in February 2008 for a 3 week stay this time.

PaulD,
I moved from Florida last March when I retired. It has developed too fast over the years and is way overcrowded. I now live in the foothills of the Ozarks in Pocahontas northeast Aekansas.
I havn't had time for a holiday since I moved because I have been working on the house. We did go away last weekend to Nashville Tn. to see my youngest son and his family. We went target shooting for an afternoon and I forgot to pully my ear protectors down while I was firing a .44 magnum, my ears are still ringing.
Next holiday will be the U.K. next year.

Paul D
08-18-2006, 05:51 PM
I think it would be the perfect place to retire it sounds like you live in the outback now?:) it must seem strange coming to the U.K to holiday after living here for so long? I'm sure you'll be visiting family while you're here? I love it in America I've also been to New York,California and las Vegas but the kids insist on us returning to Florida again because they're still at that stage were they believe that the Disney Princesses and that mouse is real,I can't say I mind though I love it there myself.:)

Had a fantastic time in Florida - went last year and did all the Disney/Universal so went back again and went to Seaworld and Busch Gardens and round and about. Lots and lots and lots of shopping - kids swam lots and the weather was fab. We were there last year during Katrina and watched it come in and pass over the Keys before it hit New Orleans - how that administration were not prepared to help those people is a tragic mystery. Wanted to swim with dolphins but it was booked up. The security leaving was a bit of an ordeal because of the terrorist scare. Oh and my son got an ear infection from swimming which meant a visit to the urgent care centre (which was efficient and spotless) and antibiotics which cost $9 and eardrops which cost (wait for this) $101.40 - sheesh!!! Now got to claim it back of medical insurance.

That said - Americans are friendly, helpful and jolly people (the ones we met anyways) although not as acute a sense of humour as ours. I love the States and buy into the Disney fantasy world thing in as big a way as the kids.

I first went in 1975 when I was a young girl and we toured down the west coast from Canada with relatives in an RV - that was a fabulous experience too - gorgeous campsites and off-the-beaten-track towns - funny thing is we almost always met a Scouser who had been out there years and got all dewey-eyed when they heard our accent. Tell you more when the jet lags passes!!!!

I haven't took advantage of the budget airlines yet because it would still cost me an arm and a leg taking the family with me but I do get to fly from JLA next year because I'm going to Portaventura in Salou,I got the holiday for a week for £1100 for a family of 4 staying on the site of the theme park with free entry into the park and water park daily. It has free shuttles to and from the airport and to and from the beach and you get access to the front of the queue because we're staying on site, anything you purchase is delivered straight to your room also,I'm quite pleased with all that.:)

Howie I've seen those pictures of the consentration camp and it's something I feel I should go and see but don't know if I could handle it,perhaps you could tell a bit more about your experience here.

Has anyone ever been to Clearwater I'm desperate to go on the Clearwater Screamer, for anyone who doesn't know what it is I'll explain,it's the World's largest speedboat that takes you out into the Sea and you're often accompanied by Dolphins,I think the kids will love it.

PaulD,
That must be something new or not advertised much, I have never heard of it, looks like fun though. I lived in Central Florida for 25 years and everything I went on there was awesome. I have been on cruises that went through the gulf and dolphins would accompany the ship and put on a show, they are natural showoffs. If I had known about that I would have gone on it before I left.
Clearwater itself is a beautifull city with great beaches, however the traffic there can be pretty bad.
While you are in that area, the Thomas Edison house in Fort Myers is well worth a visit, also the salvador Dali museum.
Have a great time:037:

We spent first 2 weeks in July on holiday in Spain. we have been to Malaga for the last 5 years. We like Malaga because it is nice central base for travelling out to see other parts of Andalucia. We take daytrips out to places like Granada, Ronda, Nerja, Gibraltar, etc. You can get to gorgeous places like Sevilla, Cordoba, Jerez. Malaga city itself is a great place. I love it there. I like the port, the lovely shopping area, the civic buldings, the history, the Alcazaba, el Gibralfaro, Picasso's house and museum. The food and the culture, the weather - I could talk plenty about Malaga!
Also, we return there each year because we have a circle of friends that we meet up with. So we have a nice social life while on holiday. :)

oohh, how I wish I was there now instead of looking out of my window at this chilly, grey and damp August day !

Yeh so do I i'm like a big soft kid when I'm there,Discovery Cove is a brilliant day out but it doesn't come cheap as you probably know but it's not overcrowded and is a lovely relaxing day out, plus you can get into Seaworld and Busch Gardens free if you have been there and I reckon it's got to be worth doing at least once.Florida is definitely somewhere that you'll keep returning to once you've been there once.

You're right - I am already looking for next year. Disney raised their prices while we were there - much to the disgust of the ticket sellers. Ate far too much of course, mostly in the Crackerbarrell and Ruby Tuesday's - nevermind! I would definitely book Discovery Cove if I went again - we really do need flights from Speke though - even though Manchester is only 45 mins away from our house. Speke is only 10 minutes away. Judging by the reaction to the New York flights from Globespan, I think they would sell flights to Florida no problem.

That trip to Port Aventura sounds good - Disney should have built in Spain instead of Paris where all the characters (Mickey Mouse etc) are rude and dont care about the kids.

I have just had to go the Asda and stock up - it's much better shopping at Walmart in Florida!!!

Why is the weather here so cr*p? I am depressed already and I am not back in work until Monday:disgust: Still - only another 50 weeks to go and I can go on holiday again - hooray!!!:celb (23):

Flyglobespan have hinted that they may add Orlando flights from Liverpool that's why I'm hoping the New York link is a success,if they do I'll probably put together my own holiday.

Talking about shopping I usually buy all of my clothes over in Florida it's just so cheap to by designer clothes so I always take extra money with me just to kit myself out, flying out there my suitcase is half empty but coming back it's chocca.:)

Portaventura should be good it's now run by Universal Studios.:)

I wish we had a Ponderosa Steakhouse over here their buffets are excellent.:p

Es Canar, Ibiza: 13th August 2006 - 20th August 2006

I was initially apprehensive about our holiday to Ibiza (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ibiza) as the big holiday partying I had got out of my system in the late 1990s. The holiday island of Ibiza has always had a reputation for its hard partying other chemical induced pleasures, especially San Antonio (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sant_Antoni_de_Portmany). Our resort was the other side of the island well away from San Antonio, happy days.

The flight was great, despite my fears of flying. Everything went into the cases, the basics went into a clear plastic bag for security due to the recent terrorist threats. Our shoes had to be removed, even the youngest lads. I really wanted to take my camera onto the plane with me but couldn't :disgust:

The First Choice Boeing 757 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_757-223) travelled at 550mph and took 2 hours and 20 mins to get there. There was suprising turbulence coming into Ibiza Airport which scared the bejesus out of me.

After picking up our luggage, with a real fear that something would have been lost, we were greeted by our mini bus man. Tired and dazed we travelled away from the airport, through Ibiza and my initial thoughts were that it seemed grotty. We arrived at our destination, the Sirenis Coral Playa Hotel (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g187460-d290721-Reviews-Sirenis_Hotel_Coral_Playa-Ibiza_Balearic_Islands.html) in Es Canar.

http://static.flickr.com/73/220847219_64ae60917e.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ijob/220847219/)

http://static.flickr.com/66/220848367_d9137190f6.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ijob/220848367/)

It is one of the growing number of all inclusive (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_inclusive_resorts) deals and once again I have heared many stories about all inclusive deals good and bad. Ours was fantastic :PDT_Piratz_26:. You could eat and drink as much as you liked between the hours of 11am and 11pm.

http://static.flickr.com/77/220848037_db2310020c.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ijob/220848037/)

Being a young family, the hotel suited us perfectly as there was a baby pool for the lads, althought most structured activities delivered by the 'reps' were aimed at 5 years and above. These included air gun target practice for those a little older.

Our first task was to make some friends around the pool, as you do. After a day of settling in we found ourselves sitting around the pool enjoying the sun with other families staying there for the same amount of time so its inevitable that you get chatting, everyone we met was really nice including those people we just passed throughout the day, Italians, French, Spanish, Brummies, everyone was friendly and eager to share advice on the best places to go for entertainment.

http://static.flickr.com/69/220848411_3e486511e8.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ijob/220848411/)

So started the rest of the week. Our days consisted of breakfast, getting our towels down to the pool-side, going shopping whilst the sun became warm, returning pool-side, drinking and enjoying ourselves, having a bit of lunch, chatting, playing, then evening meal at 7pm followed by an our or two walking into the busier areas of Es Canar and entertaining the kids on the mini fairs and play areas, returning to our hotel for 10.30ish to catch the organised hotel entertainment which I've heard was were Noel from Here'Say (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hear%27Say) started his long rd to stardom :)

http://static.flickr.com/78/220847887_316a63210a.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ijob/220847887/)

http://static.flickr.com/97/220847659_2c99cca3a4.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ijob/220847659/)

We had to leave our hotel room early on the last morning and leave our cases locked away whilst we occupied ourselves again. At this stage though, when your newly found holiday friends have already gone home only to be replaced by untanned new arrivals, you just want to come home and have a nice sleep in your own bed which I did, despite the sun burn and being peed upon whilst waiting for our bags at Manchester Airport.

I would recommend this small resort, the hotel was great and in a lovely location. We were a stones throw away from the beach. Perfect for a family or if you prefer your hols without the liveliness onf the larger resorts.

Well I only got back Friday Kev but it pisotively possed down all weekend and I couldn't get my holiday washing dry!!! I had to go back to work today which was cr*p. What do people think you know when you have been off for two weeks and are jet-lagged??? I don't know what happened while I was away - I haven't got a psychic head like Worzel Gummidge had.

Anyhoo - we used to go to Menorca all the time when our kids were smaller - they loved it and so did we - it was quiet but sociable at the same time with good restaurants where the family can eat and some bars - but it all stopped at 12 midnight which is just as well cos with small kids so did I. Ibiza looks much the same with small coves and nice little beaches.

That's what I've heard too.

Our newsagent goes every year and loves it. He says the other side of the island is so much different form San Antonio. Not sure which resort he goes too. But he speaks highly of the area.

I've never been to any of the islands. Only mainland Spain.
I hear that there are some lovely parts of Mallorca. The Spanish royals have a place there so it must be good !

I find it difficult to choose my favourite place for a holiday. When my granddaughter was a child we would take her to Disney World in Orlando at least once a year and I wouldn't have missed it for the world. I love Hawaii and we return at least once every two years. We rent a condo in Waikiki whenever we are in Hawaii (Oahu) but we usually visit one or two of the other islands when we are there.

My favourite vacation is cruising and we do at least two a year. Earlier this year we cruised from Miami to Barcelona visiting the Azores, Madeira, Gobralter, Civitivechia, Livorno and Villefranch. We stayed in Barcelona for 5 days then flew to Liverpool John Lennon Airport with easyJet.

But my number one place to visit is Liverpool. I make it my business to visit at least once a year and I am always reluctant to leave the place. I just can't get enough of Liverpool.

have you ever visited the lava flow that always seems ever present on Maui or the big islandIt is on Hawaii, the "Big Island", and it is the Kiluaea Volcano and yes, I have seen it many times. The best time to see it is in the evening, between sunset and complete darkness and to do that you need to take a cruise from Kona but it is well worth the effort and it's not to expensive.

By-the-way, if you go take the kids with you and stay in Waikiki on Oahu. Stay in a condo and don't pay the premium for a beachfront condo because nothing in Waikiki is more than a ten minute stroll from the beach. Waikiki is sandwiched between water, on one side by the Pacific Ocean, on two other sides by the Alai Wai Canal and Diamond head makes up the fourth barrier. Don't hire a car but do buy a bus pass. 'The Bus', that's what they call their public transit, takes you all over Oahu and the pass cost's approximately $40.00US a month or about $1.50 per trip. A buck fifty for a four hour journey around Oahu isn't bad value.

Staying in a condo you save by self catering which eliminates the need to eat in restaurants, which are quite expensive compared to the mainland. We buy our fresh meat and fish in China Town (Honolulu) and our fresh fruit and veg at the local market on a Saturday and Sunday near the Zoo, just a few minutes walk from our condo. Also, fill your luggage with dry and canned stuff because you don't need to pack to many clothes, only casual ware. Hawaii is the dress down capital of vacation spots. Shorts and printed shirts are formal, at all times.

Using Waikiki (Honolulu) as your base you can visit Hawaii for a weekend as the flight is about $60.00 each way and the other islands (Maui, Kahaui, Molokai) are in the same price range. Hawaii is very family friendly and lots of stuff for the family is free.

Go and enjoy.

Malaga is beautiful. There are so many lovely places there. I've got loads of discs full of pics of that region. (and video footage).
We've travelled all around Malaga during the last 5 years and we havn't seen all of it yet.
I like Malaga because it is so central for travelling out to other towns and cities - too many to list. We try to see somewhere different each time.
There are so many resorts along the coast too.

the Brits drinking abroad thing ... if you want to avoid that type of holiday you can sample some real culture by travelling around the towns and villages. We go on days out either by organised coach trips, or we just go on public transport, busses and trains. We have explored loads of places off our own steam. We've been to Gibraltar 3 times too. :)

hope you post up some great pics :)I took more than a thousand pics on my last South Pacific cruise, transfered them to my Image Bank (a 40gig HD) formatted my CF Cards and upon arriving home, tried to copy the stored pics onto a DVD. Wouldn't you know it, my Image bank HD was fried. I have been trying to find someone who can retrieve the pics, at a reasonable price, but have so far struck out. I would appreciate it if anyone knows of someone who can retrieve these pics I would be very grateful.

On this next cruise I will be taking my laptop and will burn everything to a DVD as soon as I fill a card. I have also bought a stand alone CD burner which I could take but, and as I take lots of pics, I need to use more than one CD, with the DVD I can fit everything onto one disc.

All systems go for our cruise next Friday, all paperwork in order. We leave Toronto on Friday morning arriving in Vancouver about 10:30am. We sail from Vancouver aboard Statendam and will cruise to Auckland, NZ., via San Francisco, Los Angeles, CA., Lahaina, Muai, Honolulu, Oahu, Kona, Hawaii, HI., Tabouran Island, Kiribati Republic., Pago Pago, American Samoa., Apia, Western Samoa., V'avau, Tonga., Lautoka, Fiji., Bay of Islands, Tauranga, Rotarua, NZ. We spend a couple of days in Auckland then fly to Sydney, Australia for our flight to Bangkok spending three days there then on to Hong Kong for another four days before flying home to Toronto. We will only be home for a few days then we will be driving to Clearwater for the rest of the winter.

The itinerary has been changed since we booked this cruise. We were originally due to dock in Long Beach but we are now going to the Por of LA. Also, we were supposed to visit Christmas Island but have had this port substituted for Tabouran and Lautoka substituted for Suva. I have been to both Long Beach and Suva so will not complain about these substitutions but I did want to go to Christmas Island. Tabouran (Fanning Island) I have been to and have the stamp in my passport so this substitution is a bit of a bummer.

We will decide on our spring cruise about Christmas time unless a good deal comes along in the meantime.

last three days of the cruise and we are in the South Pacific Ocean enroute from Fiji to Auckland. We have had to change our plans and will now be returning

Not sure myself Shytalk. Ironically, Filipinos in general have a problem pronouncing their F's. It usually comes out sounding like a

P.

Missus is a nurse, btw. She's an opthalmic specialist and is the boss of the Eye Clinic in Luton & Dunstable Ossie.

that the 'F' is used by Spannish speakers and the 'PH' by those who speak English. The Philippine archipeligo was named for King Philip II of Spain by

Ruy Lopez de Villalobos in 1543.

Winmarleigh Hall is a 19th Century Victorian Mansion, set in fifty acres of gardens, parkland and woodland. The Hall is located in the beautiful Lancashire countryside, just south of the historic city of Lancaster and adjacent to the unspoiled natural beauty of the Forest of Bowland. It provides various outdoor and adventurous activites and accomodation for breaks. That's where I've been over the past few days and loved every minute of it despite a 4am fire alarm.

We will be visiting, among other islands, Dominica, an ex British colony and the last Island in the Caribbean that still has native Caribe Indians and not to be confused with the Dominican Republic which was once a Spanish possesion and is now a virtual US colony. The ship, Ryndam is the sister to the last ship we cruised aboard, Statendam.

Not a cemetery I have visited but I had occasion to write about the Allied Second World War failure at Dieppe in a recent issue of Ripperologist. Journalist Terence Robertson, who wrote about the Ripper case in a Reynolds News article of 1950 and appears to have given the name "Fairy Fay" to an alleged Ripper victim of Christmas 1887 also wrote about the Dieppe Raid in Dieppe: The Shame and the Glory as well as about Liverpool hero Captain Frederic John Walker, RN, CB, DSO. I think all such cemeteries are intensely moving and serve as monuments to the tragedy and futility of war.

3/5/07) SeaWorld made the big announcement today all about Aquatica which will open in March 2008. The whole message here is that you’ve seen SeaWorld and you’ve seen waterparks before... now imagine a waterpark designed by SeaWorld and let your imagination run wild. The nearly 60 acre park will feature two wave pools, 36 waterslides, 6 rivers and lagoons and 80,000 square feet of beach area.
In addition to the lush jungle atmopshere that will be unlike almost any other waterpark you’ve ever seen, the park will be filled with animals as well, from Commerson’s Dolphins to a variety of colorful birds and tropical fish. It will feature the world’s only side by side wave pools that can be run independently from each other. Each side will offer a completely difference experience, one making 5 foot swells and crashing waves while the other will generate rolling surf. Together the two can make nine different wave patterns and even sync up to create one giant wave or dueling waves. Aquatica will also offer two very different river experiences. One is your typical mellow lazy river with a twist... guiding you past gentle waterfalls, exotic birds and into a cave system where you can view right inside an undersea grotto full of colorful fish. The other river is a bit more rambunctious, with a fast current that will jet riders through rolling rapids and past gushing geysers. We’ve talked about the slides before... the 8 lane racing slide, a triple drop raft slide, a six story tall family raft slide, two cannon-bowls, the four tube slides, the two signature slides through the dolphin exhibit (that’s 18 big slides so far) and many more smaller slides attached to either the 60 foot tall water fortress or in the special children’s areas that I assume will bring it up to the 36 mentioned. Speaking of the children’s areas, they claim that there will be special options available for even the smallest of children not even able to walk yet.

I'm definitely going here next year, nowhere comes near America in my opinion.I suppose I'll have to make do with Portaventura on Tuesday.:)
