A NEW £2.5m film by award-winning Liverpool writer Frank Cottrell Boyce has this week swung into production in the city.

The film, Grow Your Own, is described as about "multi-ethnic tensions and friendships set against working class territorialism on an allotment in Merseyside."

It stemmed from a series of short documentaries, first shown on Channel 4, called Putting Down Roots. This showed refugees who were given allotments as part of a Liverpool City Council scheme.

The story caught the eye of 24 Hour Party People creator Frank, who paired with Merseyside filmmaker Carl Hunter - who made the original three-minute documentaries - and Warp Films to put together the script for the full-length feature.

The production is supported by North West Vision through its Merseyside Film and TV Fund (MFTVF), who joined forces with BBC Films and the UK Film Council to get the project off the ground.
