Formerly St peters Church and is the latest bar and restaurant to open in Liverpool,it retains a lot of the churches original features i.e the alter and stained glass windows and as the name suggests has a distinct Latin feel of Cuba "Miami".Its a classy bar and is aiming at the Blue Bar and Panamerican bar set.Its food and drink echoes a distinct latin flavour with influences from Cuba,Argentina and Brazil. The location was formerly a centre for Liverpool's Polish community and was visited by Mother Teresa shortly before its closure in the late 1990's.
This is the one that Kev Seed off Radio City was raving on about isnt it? I think Liz from Atomic Kitten was filming her latest Vid there too. I may pay a visit soon.

My mate's been there Kev and said it's brilliant,I believe it's a bit pricey but well worth it,he said something about the tables being attached to the bar so you don't have to leave your seat to get a bevvy, now that's what I call class.
Anyone got contact details for this place yet?
Was St Peters that really old chruch that Urban Splash bought in the city Centre?

Was St Peters that really old chruch that Urban Splash bought in the city Centre?
Yes it was Max,no contact number as yet Kev.
Urban Splash seem to be buyalot of places.
A ROMAN Catholic campaigner, furious about a 300-year-old church being turned into a bar and restaurant, has branded the project sacrilegious.
Kay Kelly said she is furious the church on Seel Street has been transformed into a bar and restaurant when it was an important place of worship.
St Peter's Church is one of the oldest churches in Liverpool but, after being left derelict for many years, has now been turned into a Cuban bar and restaurant.
But the restaurant, which had its launch party last night, still retains the listed stained glass windows and marble plaques of the church.
Mrs Kelly, a great-grandmother, said: "I am hurt actually. I think it's mocking the church.
"If it had been a mosque, you can imagine the uproar. They would not have allowed it and I would have supported them.
"And that is why our church is letting our children down.
"I am not a fundamentalist, I am an ordinary housewife who has faith and want to pass it on to my children.
"There's another church down by the docks which has been turned into a climbing wall but you can't recognise it as a church but, in this one, it seems like a church."
The Parish of St Peter was closed in 1978, after which the building was used by the Polish Roman Catholic community.
It was then sold in April 2001 for development.
But Mrs Kelly said, as well as the marble plaques, some bodies may still be buried under the church, because it is so old.
She claimed one of them was a priest "who gave his life for the community during a typhoid outbreak and who wouldn't leave his congregation."
"People may say the church has been deconsecrated, but how can you do that? You can't take back a blessing," she added..
"The things going on in there now are not things that should be going on inside a church. I think it's sacrilegious."
Mrs Kelly said she is not angry with the owners of the new bar, named Alma de Cuba, but is upset with the Catholic Archdiocese.
But a spokesman for the Archdiocese said a church was more than a building, it was a congregation and, once the worshippers had gone, the church is no longer sacred.
He said most of the items of spiritual and material value had been taken away and were being used in other churches in the area. But he added: "A number of marble plaques remain, as they cannot be removed because of the conservation listing on the building.
"These commemorate a number of the priests of the Benedictine Religious Order, who owned and administered the church building when it served as a Parish Church. They remain in the building as a matter of statutory requirement and with the full knowledge of that Order.
"It is understood that the bodies of Benedictine priests buried on the site were removed in accordance with ecclesiastical and statutory requirements by the Order."
Urban Splash, the property development firm which bought the church, hit back at the claims it was an inappro- priate use of the building and said they had actually saved the building.
A spokeswoman said: "Urban Splash has saved a very important part of Liverpool's heritage and we have restored many of the original features of the church.
Alma de Cuba's owners said they had paid special attention to the spiritual nature of the building and reacted sensitively to its previous use. A spokesman said: "We have given strong consideration to the historic spiritual significance of St Peter's Church and we believe this is reflected in the sensitive and innovative approach to interior design."

Is this the place on Seel Street?
Paul D
04-18-2006, 06:36 PM
Yes it's in Seel Street and was European bar of the year I think.:celb (23):
Alma de Cuba, on Seel Street, this week won the Best Interior prize at the Theme Awards in London.
The city centre nightspot fought off strong competition from well-known East London restaurant Annexe 3.
Rob Guttmann, the creative force behind the bar, said: "This is a proud moment for me and the hardworking team behind Alma De Cuba.
"It's timely recognition for a venue that has a strong personal stamp and as a project, has been my most rewarding to date.
"The bar is a unique and breathtaking space and our team were only too happy to take on its original character."
The venue was opened last September and still retains the listed stained glass windows and marble plaques of a former church.
It was renovated on the site of 300-year-old St Peter's church which was one of the oldest places of worship in Liverpool.
The nightspot is now a popular hangout for the city's rich and famous with many footballers and TV stars spotted at weekends.

Stylish it may be, but I wasn't very impressed when I ate in there. Service was 'ok', interior of the place was spot-on, but unfortunately the food wasn't up to it. For the price you pay, you don't get much on your plate.
Still, not a bad place for a beer...

I went the Mabo In 2004.:PDT_Aliboronz_24:
Had crispy duck for the first time and couldn't finish It because It was too greasy.
Not my fave in particular but anyone been the Karaoke restaurant under China Garden/Far East in Berry Street. We raced there late for our works xmas do so I just parked in Berry st, the firm said they'd pay for the ticket as there was 7 in that car so we couldn't be any later than we already were.
Great night, eat as much as you like, just keep going back up - buffet style. Great ale, packed out, sang a few songs - they went 1 per table then back around again.
Don't remember much about getting home after under up in Mathew St, went back groggy eyed next night (the day was a blur) and couldn't believe my luck - no ticket ha ha.

tokyu noodle bar, next to mei mei, kimos. gulshan, la piccolo, Ma bo, gone down the nick a bit to years ago. The Casa for good pub grub. The Greek in York st. can't remember the name. Kieths, the Italian at the bottom of wood st. Tokyu is great if you can get in for the students!!!
Went to the Batch Hatch (Me mam's kitchen) predecessor for about 12 years solid when I worked in Dale st, Rose, the proprioter wouldn't leave when the developers wanted her to)
Tried that one that used to be the games shop on the corner, further down, last month. Nice burgers but where hasn't? Got a surprise when I went downstairs to the toilets though, a snazzy bar down there - you could get lost.
The Via Veneto in Old Hall street (used to be a bank, then a pub) is a nice one too but I like any Chinese cos that's my fave food.

Tabac on Bold Street is good for a spot of lunch, always go for their homemade bread which is amazing. Ego is really good, and great value on weeknights too. Yums is good for all-you-can-eat, but it gets really busy in their at the weekend.
Shere Khan (Next to Mei Mei on Bery Street) is excellent for a good curry, probably the best I've had in Liverpool, and it's a really nice restaurant too.

I'd recommend...
Indian Delight (Renshaw Street)
Kimo's (Mount Pleasant)
Mei Mei (Berry Street)
Que Pasa Cantina (Lark Lane)
I'm disappointed with...
Alma de Cuma (crappy portions)
Saffron (very poor customer service when they were busy - no excuse)
Shere Khan (naan breads were all wrong)
Also I should point out - if you eat at the Pan-American Club on Albert Dock, the long featureless stainless steel tray on the right is not the urinals... oops...
I remember Brenda posting how small the portions were In Alma De Cuba.
They were tinnnnny!

No, but everyone was grinning when I got back to the table. Apparently my girlfriend's brother had said 'I bet his ****es in the sink...'. A common mistake, apparently. I remember thinking, Christ this is high, what would you do if you were any shorter? Also, it's a unisex toilet, so I was lucky...
Yes, portions in Alma de Cuba (and I'm talking food now...) are too small. It's all that nouveau cuisine rubbish. Go to Que Pasa Cantina, get the steak tortillas and the array of dishes, sauces and plates they bring over covers most of the table! A **** good feed there...
Unisex toilets eh.:unibrow:

Mmm food. Not been out for proper meals a lot since i moved back last summer.
Saffron (formerly Shapla) is probably the best curry house i've ever been to. In response to Shappels post earlier, must have been a bad night as we've never had a problem (mind that might be cos they're used to us and as long as Cobra arrives we're happy)
Prefer spanish food and not enough choice especially as two of them are the same group (La Tasca) and La |vina is only the slightly more upmarket version of La Tasca.
Anyone been to Da Capo on Bixteth St? It's about 1 min from me so wondering if its anygood.
Oh and those posters about Korove coproration i.e. Alma De Cuba etc have The Railway on Tithebarn St. Not 100% sure on what they are doing with the bar (apart from putting the prices up) but the upper part will be a hotel.

Depends on the night, the mood and the company I suppose. For a friendly cross section of customers, a lively atmosphere and excellent ambience I usually head for La Tasca in Queens Square.
On a Wednesday night Pierre Bistro. Not only is the value for money there (2 course meal and a BOTTLE of plonk for EACH diner for just (I think) £10.95. It's just got a great atmosphere too and the staff are very friendly.
Quite like the St. Petersburg but not fussy on Russian (or German/Hungarian) food. La Vina is a really nice place. The Courtyard is still being advertised but it has closed down. Brewers Fayres tick lots of boxes but service can vary (and change). So The Britannia at the waterfront might hopefully have improved. My favourites are The Pheasant in Hightown and Winwick Quay in Warrington.
Pod in Allerton was great but went past on Sunday (their busiest day) and they were closed.
Whatever one's choice there is no way that any Liverpudlian can complain about lack of choice when it comes to restaurants.
I think we should form a gourmets club and on a pre-arranged day each month use our Hi-Life Diners Club cards to explore, enjoy, and get two for the price of one.
Most of Allerton Rd is becoming one big bar/ restaurant lol

Suits me; all local and great atmosphere..... I think most of those drinking and dining in the bars (possibly South Road and Crosby Village) are city centre refugees. The kind of people who used to add so much to the character and atmosphere of town.
Like me, they have been put off by parking restrictions (few in Allerton), the dearth of Liverpool 'character pubs', high priced taxis which when you need them most are as rare as hens teeth, high priced meals and drinks at the touristy places. Let's not mention vagrants in every doorway (seemingly).
Then there's groups of police everywhere so it looks like there is a terrorist alert on, in the day mob-handed traffic wardens just daring you to . . . . and back again to twilight, youths who can't handle it vomiting or peeing in the shop doorways.
Thank God I don't work there. There must be some sights to be seen in the mornings. I was in one bar (next to the 'Cavern' and was quite taken aback at the pittance in change I was given.

Plenty still in town, and most decent ones serve decent ale to go with it.

Casa, Hope Street, Liverpool

IF YOU are looking to steer away from the long queues and overpriced mainstream venues and add a touch of culture into your social activities, then why not visit the Casa bar nestled in the middle of Liverpool’s vibrant Hope Street?
About as far as you can get from your average chain bar, the Casa was bought by ex-Liverpool dockers who lost their jobs in the famous strikes of the mid-90s and, along with the beer and curry, legal advice on working pay and conditions are also on the menu.
With a mixed bag of a clientele made up of students from the nearby universities and many ex- dock workers themselves, the bar has a friendly atmosphere and a contemporary feel.
As well as the actual bar, it offers two function rooms which host a variety of meetings for social groups in the area and, in the summer, salsa classes are held there, too.
For those only here for the beer, the Casa offers international and local beers which are reasonably priced, around £1.65 before 6.00pm and £1.95 after then.
The bistro, meanwhile, seats around 50 people so there is rarely the need to reserve a table. A traditional menu is available with dishes such as curry and steaks on offer and again reasonably priced at around £6.95.
