't was a little hazy when I went up t'other week, Max. It would be best on a cold, crisp and sunny autumn day I believe.

Not too cold though. Although alot higher going up the Eifel on a cool day is even cooler when your higher up.

You still got some clear pics there though.:PDT_Aliboronz_24:

It wasn't fun when they were building the new lifts over a few months and us crazy bell ringers

had to WALK up to the tower. The only fun part about that was coming down, you'd race down the stairs and hope you could stop before you got to the bottom.

Who needs a gym!

I think the tower's only open for a

few hours on Sunday. Best give them a ring.
BTW, I took this pic from the tower quite a few years ago. Notice any changes?:unibrow:

4th November 2006

Had a trip at 11am this morning, spent an hour wandering around taking snaps, then off to the

tower with a couple of Germans crammed inside the tiny lift. The top was amazing although tricky to take pics as the slats are not that wide to allow clear

views. So the camera was slowly sqeezed past them and my hands placed around the slats, being very careful not to drop it!!!!!

I tried going up once. I got out the first lift and those tiny corridors, well I swear I felt the building move so I went down asap :D My

Glad you enjoyed my website! I took all the video's up there on a special day

when you're given the rare opportunity to look around the bells while they are ringing. It is a very dangerous thing to do - clappers from the bells have

been known to fly off before now and one embedded itself in the workman's hut that used to be there!

I've been up church towers since I was about 6

months old and used to the sound of them but we did a sound measurement a few years back. Ringing chamber came to about 70db and all the 12 bells at full

chat got it up to about 110db. I think you can start to damage your hearing at about 120db but anything more than a few mins up there and it's like being in

a nightclub all night! An utterly fantastic sound they make, but very poor accoustics outside the tower make them sound like a fart in a gale. Great George

(the 14 ton bell) that is hung dead (fixed and doesn't move) is hit by a clapper on the inside - the clapper alone is around 1 ton and it makes an amazing

sound. On a foggy day outside, you can actually see the fog around the tower move!

Is it also true that when you get out of the first lift to cross to the second that there is a hole that

looks downwards from the roof?

In the early 1970s, the view of Everton was fantastic. It was full of high rises on the hill and looked like a

mini Manhatten. Literally. I have seen no photos from the top from that period.

Is it also true that when you get out of the first lift to cross to the second that there is a hole that looks downwards from the roof?

Sort of - ish lol. When you come out of the first lift, you are over the arches of the 'arms' of the Cathedral - basically where the font is and the shop and the like. From here you walk through a narrow corridor until you come to a set of steps and can either head out on to the side roof or carry on up the stairs. At this point, but very rarely unlocked, you can open the door to view the central space around the gallery but you really do need a good head for heights at this point!!!

When the lifts were last out of action, if you were fit enough, you could run up the stairs to the base of the tower in one go, rest for a few moments and then run up the second set of steps to the ringing chamber - then collapse :Colorz_Grey_PDT_16:

I was like El Skiddo when I seen that Narrow bit of a Staircase goin' up what looked like the side of a Mountain..I calmed down a bit up there after standin' in the middle and not Movin for 10 minutes with everybody lookin at me rather strange..And all of a sudden it hit me..Gorra go back down..That was that...I couldnt move again for about half an hour with this Panic attack and it was 10 times worse goin' down as I could not hide and look up or something..I had everything staring right at me as i was watching my step going down..

Its stood for decades and yet I feel that when I'm there it will collapse.I felt like that the first and second time I climbed cranes, the second of which I totally froze up and then had to climb back down. I was convinced it was swaying about and it was only a little one. Sometimes I'm ok on the plane - I think it just depends on what frame of mind you're in.

Next time you're up there, try and surpress the irrational thoughts. Easy to say, I know, but harder to do (as I find in the plane!). Funnily enough, I went to see a psychotherapist about the flying thing (which is better now than it was) and he was a pilot himself, but couldn't stand being high up on something connected to the ground!! When I did Beetham West crane the first time, I got to the top on my own and had to talk to myself the whole time I was up there to keep calm!

Cracking pictures Kev!! I remember when the Queen came to the Cathedral for Maundy Thursday and we were told that although we were allowed access to the tower, we couldn't go on the roof. So we did. :Colorz_Grey_PDT_16:

Police Helicopter could have snipered us out but they didn't - and the Queen didn't wave back either! :Smiliz_Kingz_PDT_13

I checked the Cathedral website and it doesn't appear to say a price but I think it was about £4.50 when I last went up late last year.

It's a real shame that Liverpool Cathedral can't get their priorities right. Ever since they put the bells in, the accoustics have been really bad because the bells have the whole of the massive tower to echo around in before the sound comes out. They're regarded as the hardest peal to ring on if you're not used to the sound and depending on the wind depends on whether you can hear them outside!

And the same at St Paul's Cathedral:

I've just uploaded a new video on youtube.com - this time showing the ringing chamber at Liverpool Cathedral with all 12 bells going.

If you think there is something wrong with the sound, trust me, there ain't! That is the very poor accoustics in the tower and it is what you hear!

I was in St James' gardens on Saturday when they were ringing the bells and they sounded pretty good.

But I did go to my 1st church tower when I was about 6 months old and bunged in the corner by my parents, so I've grown accustomed to em!

Try my website - there's a chap standing next to the 11th bell which is just over 2 tons in weight.

If you look at the 1934 picture, you'll see the metal frame - that's the ringing chamber.

LIVERPOOL Cathedral’s Great George bell will peal for an hour on Monday as part of a city-wide bells symphony to celebrate the 800th birthday.

It will take three people working in succession to toll the 15-ton bell, the deepest toned in the country, for the full 60 minutes – the longest continuous length of time it has ever been rung. more (http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/liverpoolecho/news/echonews/tm_headline=goodness%2D-gracious%2D-great-bells-of-iron%2D%26method=full%26objectid=18937894%26siteid =50061-name_page.html)

I'm sure they were practicing yesterday, I could hear bell ringing.

The Echo is always good for crap information :)

It's a 14 ton bell, and the deepest toned bell in the UK is from the Queen Mother chime at York Minster.

I've 'rung' Great George many a time, you can ring it by yourself but you need a bit of muscle. Certainly ringing it for an hour will be interesting - it travels for miles and I think I'll be there with a camera to record a few minutes worth.

The trouble is, they're ringing at St Nick's Pier Head - which you can't hear from the centre of town, and SFX too, which won't reach town. The only bells that you will hear are the ones at the Municipal Buildings (Council offices) in Dale Street - and of course Great George!

Here's a clip of Great George in action:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h85dwqyCrwg

(and after about 30 seconds after the end of the clip - the rope snapped!!!)
