View Full Version : Liverpool Radio Stations
A MERSEYSIDE pop star and a football executive are battling for the right to start up Liverpool's next radio station.
The FM frequency, the last one available for Liverpool, is the focus of af ierce bidding war between 10 rival stations.
Former Lightning Seeds frontman Ian Broudie has backed a bid for a rock station, while the chief executive of Everton Football Club, Keith Wyness, is behind one for an adult pop station.
Broudie, whose hits include the World Cup anthem Three Lions, is the non-executive director for The Arrow 105.9 FM.
The singer and producer said: "If we were granted the frequency, The Arrow would be Merseyside's first station totally dedicated to Liverpool music and would have alot of scope to play more unsigned bands."
Mr Wyness has backed the bid for a station called Original 106FM which would focus on a mix of chart and classic pop hits targeted at people in their 40s and 50s.
Other stations in the bidding war are 24-hour news and debate station all Talk-FM, Citytalk, Planet Rock, Rock Talk, Liver FM, Wicked FM, Jack FM, and Merseylife.
Paul D 08-01-2006, 05:23 PM Wouldn't that be great for local unsigned bands, airplay accessed by millions is this too good to be true?
Howie 08-01-2006, 11:36 PM See advertisement of FM independent local radio licence for Liverpool here (http://www.ofcom.org.uk/radio/ifi/rbl/car/advts/liverpool/liverpool.pdf).
Seems "the extent to which any such proposed service would broaden the range of programmes available by way of local services to persons living in the area or locality for which it would be provided, and, in particular, the extent to which the service would cater for tastes and interests different from those already catered for by local services provided for that area or locality" is likely to be considered of particular importance.

wallasey 08-02-2006, 10:57 AM Cant beat City though!
Seriously, Liverpool does need more alternative stations as City is mainly current pop, clubby (Friday and Saturday nights), phone in and requests, Juice is just club ( ? ), Magic 1548 (as with all Magic Stations) is older 80's, 70's and a little bit of the 60s and Merseyside is all sorts of things.
I would go for a Rock station as I think that this genre of music is "ignored" and it would give some stations a run for thier money too!
City FM is great after Kev Seed has been on, I absolutely love Simon Ross and his chiiled out tunes he plays, the 80's classics are cool.

wallasey 08-03-2006, 08:00 AM Glen Hunt in the Afternoon is good too, I like the "Thing's that Make you Phone in" section and the cross line calls can be funny too! I didn't used to like Rick "the Hoof" Houghton when he first started. I thought he was trying to hard to be liked and was a little bit "smug" but now he has settled in and isn't doing all that badly.
I must admit that the Friday and Saturday night line up is a favorite of mine; Dave Graham and Lee Butler are great Radio DJ's as well as Pez Tellit and Les Calvert. I think they all do a good job and Lee Butler even records his show if he know's he won't be there which is a very good idea.
The Sunday programmes are quite good on City too. We have Simon Ross and the very amusing John Bishop who is also starting to become a great DJ too!
If you go on the link that Howie posted, the Desperate Scousewives archive is a good listen as is some of the special reports which are very hard hitting (Just listen to Red Light Liverpool and you will see what I mean)
Howie 08-14-2006, 02:18 PM Battle for city airwaves

By Mike Hornby, Liverpool Echo
HOW'S this for a clash of the titans? Sir David Henshaw, Ian Broudie, Everton boss Keith Wyness and Derek Hatton are all battling it out to get you to listen.
They are among the big names who have thrown their hat into the ring for Liverpool's new radio broadcasting licence.
The 105.9FM frequency, the last one available for Liverpool, is the focus of a fierce contest between 10 rival stations.
They have to show they will provide a service which is entirely different to the existing shows on City, Magic, Juice and Radio Merseyside.
To prove their commitment they have already had to pay out £25,000 simply to allow them to bid.

I can imagine a dedicated Everton FC radio station would be a big hit.. Maybe even Dezza's Station,:unibrow: "Militant FM" would be too..
But what would Henshaws be concerned with, what would be the format ? ... any suggestions anyone ?
:D
Howie 08-20-2006, 11:05 PM 'More bids' for Virgin Radio firm
SMG, owner of Virgin Radio and the Scottish broadcaster STV, is set to receive further takeover bids, according to reports.
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/41206000/jpg/_41206901_radio203ap.jpg
SMG and UTV have major
commercial radio interests
On Friday it said it had received a 50:50 merger proposal from TalkSport owner Ulster Television (UTV).
However former Channel Four executive Rob Woodward is putting together a cash offer for SMG, The Business said.
Meanwhile UTV would be keen on a counter bid from SMG, the Sunday Telegraph suggested.
And investment group 3i and the private equity arm of UBS had a sounded out a £300m bid for STV, The Observer said.
Speculation
Under Friday's UTV approach, both firms would own 50% of the merged company.
However the lack of cash in the UTV proposal may put off SMG shareholders, analysts say, given UTV is worth around £40m less than the Glasgow-based group.
If SMG was keen on a counter-bid it could end up with 55% of the enlarged company, the Sunday Telegraph report suggests.
Both firms have major radio interests. Last year UTV bought the Wireless Group which included TalkSport and 16 independent radio stations including Juice FM in Liverpool (http://www.juicefm.com/) and Swansea Sound.
SMG's other assets include cinema advertising business Pearl & Dean and TV production firm Ginger Productions.
There had been speculation for some time that UTV is interested in a move for SMG - uniting the two main parts of Britain's main commercial TV network which aren't owned by ITV.

RADIO City has won the broadcasting licence to run a new station on Merseyside.
CityTalk 105.9FM was awarded the 12-year licence after watchdog Ofcom opted for an all-speech radio station instead of another music-based broadcaster.
Ten companies had spent in the region of £2.5m bidding for the licence which will reach up to 1.5m listeners in Merseyside and north Cheshire.
Radio City founder and chairman Terry Smith said last night he plans to spend a further £3m setting up the new business which will create around 30 on and off-air jobs.
Mr Smith, who travelled across America to gain ideas for the new station, said: "When people think of all-talk radio they tend to think about the BBC and Radio Merseyside, but we are going to offer something completely unique to Britain.

GhostSearch 11-11-2006, 04:38 PM I only listen to the Roger Phillips phone on Radio Merseyside and sometimes tune into either Juice or City if their coming live from a club on a Saturday night, just to remind meself of when I was young meself :celb (23):

So no mention of FOOTBALL?
That'll make a refreshing change! :D
The more I listen to Radio City 96.7 the more I wake up to this station (which won't be much longer, its just that when I get to work I've forgotten about changing channels) the more I get really annoyed and disappointed (but not surprised sadly) at the lack of any Liverpool focus through out the station and the amount of sexual innuendo and related jokes for such an early morning with so many young ears listening.
There seems to be an influx of Londoners and people form outside the region.
There's far too much emphasis on sexual innuendo and idle chitchat about what they had for tea last night, honestly.
Even my fave presenter (Rossy) is 'gegging' in on it all, still like Rossy though.
Despite being in the Tower, Radio City could be any radio station from any city in the UK sadly.
the lack of any Liverpool focus through out the station
All commerical stations are the same now, its only at news time you get any clue where they are based. I've been quite disturbed sometimes at the adverts given to Manchester on Radio City. They are always giving promotions to the MEN Arena and a few months ago they teamed up with co-op holidays to give away free holidays, but from Manchester airport only. There's a advert they are running for Thomsonfly's routes from Manchester at the moment, implying that no frills airlines (ie the ones that fly from Liverpool) take you to places you've never heard of and go from inaccessible airports.
Thanks for the reply, thought it was me going mad. I agree completely.

I've been meaning to post something like this for a while but thought I was paranoid
billo 10-12-2007, 09:02 AM Our secretary has it on all the time, I hate it now not only for the reasons given by Kev. but the fact that they have only 3 records to play. I fear that if I hear The Plain White T's one more time I may go ballistic!
Just try getting your books publicised if you're an author or in Paul (the Gardens) case, his film. Radio City have no programmes or local history/arts platform for doing this. When it comes to local issues being aired and even local talent spotlighted musically, you can't beat Radio Merseyside for that.
lindylou 10-12-2007, 11:34 AM Well, as you've heard me say many times - I hate commercial radio.
I don't know why people suffer it !
Presenters named for radio launch
Oct 31 2007 (http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/liverpool-news/local-news/2007/10/31/) by Neil Hodgson, Liverpool Echo
THE line-up of presenters for Liverpool’s new radio station has been announced.
City Talk 105.9FM will hit the airwaves in January, with shows presented by actress Margi Clarke former Anfield star John Aldridge and ex-Brookside star Dean Sullivan.
Soccer legends Ian St John and John Aldridge will be talking sport, joined by established presenters Phil Easton, Peter McDowall and late night chat show host Pete Price.
New studios are being created in the Radio City Tower to accommodate the new FM local radio programme.
Emap Radio beat off a host of bidders to win the licence in a contest this year.
Radio City chairman Terry Smith said: “The new station will be 100% speech and unlike any existing service in the UK. It will tackle real issues and real emotions through the eyes of the people of Liverpool.”
City Talk’s programming will include news, sport, features, documentaries, advice, phone-ins, studio discussions and flagship programmes.
Richard Maddock, station director of Radio City and City Talk, said: “City Talk will be a station that invites interaction. It will be real-life radio with local people and local experts, involving and not scared to campaign for what it believes in.
“The station’s presenters will be entertainers with a great sense of humour and while being naturally optimistic in our outlook, Šwe’ll Šalways be honest about the city and its problems.”
Station officials estimate the new service will reach 1.5m people and the licence will be worth about £20m to Emap.

Hes very popular despite what his critics say.
He will bring a huge audience with him.
Not the type i would like to associate with Liverpool, but i guess the figures will attract advertisers.
Well, I've changed my station to Juice FM, the Radio City Breakfast show is gutter and I can't blieve they get paid for chatting about nonsense with a rediculous amount of sexual inuendo.

More of a Radio Merseyside man myself, Kev, but I agree that the Radio City breakfast team talk trash. Kev Seed is NOT funny.

Kev Seed has done the same joke, formula and style for 10 years. Why is he still on the same slot? Theres been numerous DJs who could do the Breakfast show 10 times better than him. Miss for the days off Tony Snell, now a Radio Merseyside old git.
Rick Shaw was the funniest DJ Radio City had. Hes been gone about 6 years now though.
Juice FM is the best station at the minute. The Dance tunes take me back to my recent holiday.
The Police chief is on the Roger Phillips phone-in today between 12 and 2pm fielding questions regarding crime in the city - he should have a busy day after recent events.
