PEOPLE in south Liverpool are being urged to rally round to help Woolton Village win a national award.
After a five-year run of success in the North West in Bloom competition, Woolton village has been selected to represent the region in this summer's national competition, Britain In Bloom.
The village will be competing against nine others in the large village category.
Organisers Woolton In Bloom are aiming for the coveted silver award, but say the community needs to pull together to make it happen.
Cllr Barbara Collinge, one of the leaders of Woolton In Bloom, said: "When we started entering North West in Bloom in 2001 we wanted to bring the community together after a debate over a traffic scheme caused divisions.
"We've been very successful in competing against some of the prettiest chocolate box villages in the country who don't have the same problems an urban village has with things like graffiti.
"The prospect of watering 70 hanging baskets around the village is quite daunting, and we really need more people to come and help."

THE FUTURE of Liverpool's last independent picture house was uncertain last night after the widow of its former owner announced she wants to sell the Woolton venue.
www.wooltonpicturehouse.co.uk (http://www.wooltonpicturehouse.co.uk/)
Wikipedia Entry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woolton_Picture_House)
LIVERPOOL'S last privately-owned picture house needs a saviour after the last picture show. The future of the Woolton Cinema has been uncertain since the unexpected death of its owner David Wood in June.
Mr Wood's widow Fleur has now decided she is unable to run it and the picture house will close its doors on September 3.
But the Wood family and the cinema's 12-strong workforce hope the silver screen will be turned on once again - four interested parties have already come forward.
Cashier supervisor Judy Ball said: "We all love this place and we know how much the community loves it.
"It is the last independent cinema in Liverpool and there is nowhere else like it.
"We don't care what happens, as long as it is saved."
Ms Ball, of West Derby, says she had to turn her head to wipe away tears when a small boy asked what was going to happen to the cinema.
"We were all devastated when David died. We had been praying that he would pull through.
"It is understandable why Fleur would want to sell the place. She doesn't know the industry and the cinema was always David's baby. The situation is just so sad.
"People come from all over the place to the Woolton. They won't go to any other cinema, what will they do now?"
After Mr Wood was taken ill in April, dedicated staff have been determined to keep the cinema going, not least projectionist David Parr.
Mr Parr, the cinema's only full-time employee, said last night: "The body of the cinema remains. The staff is its pulse, but David was its heart.
"We have kept going as a tribute to him, but also because we love the cinema so much and it has to be kept alive."
Pat Cobham, the cinema's accountant and company secretary, confirmed that four businessmen have already come forward.
One of the potential buyers is believed to be Wirral-born Charles Morris, who owns a small independent chain, which included the Royalty in Bowness, Cumbria and the Regal in Lancaster.
Ms Cobham said: "Mrs Wood felt there was no way she could keep the cinema open, she has a full-time job and it was always her husband who dealt with the day-to-day running of it.
"There has not been any interest from property developers. It would be a difficult site to develop." Mr Wood was the last bastion of traditional cinema in Liverpool, and after his death at the age of 59, projectionists acros proclaimed the end of an era for private cinema.
His grandfather had opened the city's first purpose-built picture house, the Bedford Hall in Walton, on Boxing Day in 1908.
This led to the well-known Bedford Cinema chain which included the Abbey Cinerama in Wavertree and many others like King's Hall at Anfield, Mayfair on Aigburth Road and the Plaza in Allerton.
Later the chain was run by David's father, Tony Wood. David Wood worked briefly in his father's cinemas but mainly worked in the distribution side.
It wasn't until he took a gamble in 1992 that he made his first and only move into the cinema-running side of the business by purchasing Woolton Cinema.
The single screen at Woolton is well-loved by cinema enthusiasts for its old-fashioned presentation with plush comfortable seats and an atmosphere harking back to the golden era of cinema.
Mrs Wood said: "He loved that cinema. He was proud to continue a family tradition that spanned almost a century."

Woolton village in south Liverpool is representing the North West in Britain in Bloom and preparing for the judges visit on Tuesday 1st August.
About Woolton
Woolton quarry supplied the sandstone for many of Liverpool’s buildings including the Anglican Cathedral.
In the Victorian times many of Liverpool’s successful and rich merchants moved out to the area.
On 6th July 1957 John Lennon and Paul McCartney met for the first time at the St Peter’s church fete in Woolton.
continues (http://www.bbc.co.uk/liverpool/content/articles/2006/07/28/woolton_in_bloom_06_feature.shtml)....
Hope the picture house stays, want to go there!
Taking a real liking to that area, don't know why but it looks peacful and nice to live around.:PDT_Aliboronz_24:
I go for bike rides up there even though it's just to Tesco and back hahaha.:Colorz_Grey_PDT_16:
The Allerton cinema is still a single screen so it's not the only one but it's owned by the Odeon that one.:Smiliz_Kingz_PDT_13
Lots of Forestry in Woolton which I like although some of it's near Netherly which I don't like.

I
love this news report (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/merseyside/6042146.stm):PDT_Piratz_26:
Chanting children catch
suspects
A group of primary school pupils foiled a gang of armed robbers by memorising their car registration as a chant.
The
children, aged nine and 10, from Liverpool, repeated the chant while another pupil ran into the school for a pen and paper to take down the
details.
Police were able to trace the suspects less than 40 minutes after the robbery, said a spokeswoman.
Three men, aged 19, 22 and 23, are
being questioned on suspicion of robbery by Merseyside Police.
The incident began just before 1100 BST on Tuesday when a gang of robbers, armed with a
knife, threatened a security guard making a delivery to a bank in the Woolton area of the city.
Cash stolen
The gang stole a cash box and
escaped in a waiting car, which they later abandoned.
But they were spotted by a woman walking her dog who memorised their registration
number.
A Merseyside Police spokeswoman said: "Because she didn't have a pen and paper on her, she went to nearby Woolton junior school, where a
group of children were just about to leave for a swimming lesson.
"She repeated the car's registration number and the children began a chant to help
them remember it, while one of them ran into the school for a pen and paper.
"Police were quickly on the scene and three suspects were traced to an
address in Childwall, where they were arrested less than 40 minutes after the initial robbery."
The spokeswoman thanked the children and the woman.
I must say this was brilliant!

Cool story like but why did't she go into a shop and buy some pen and paper if she was able to still remember it enough to tell
the children?

That's the Reservoir Tower Max,The Highest point In Liverpool so I'm told.
Up on that Hill area was one of John Lennon's favourite Places and thats where him and his mates would play Footy.
Reynolds Park at the Church Rd end of Reservoir Rd was another of Lennon's favourite places.

Because it'll have to fit in with their new image (the Dovedale became Alma de Santiago)
Makes their argument that the elephant head was only taken down (not smashed!) for restoration sound a bit suss.

Hopefully it went initially into a skip and is being kept for putting up again. It would seem to me that since Alma de Cuba and Alma de Santiago have some exotic decor, I should think the new establishment at the Elephant would also. Thus the elephant head would fit right in. So I should think it would be in their interests to restore it and replace it... if it hasn't been destroyed.

I'm starting to dislike the Korova group bars now. Alma de Cuba was interesting and different, Alma de Santiago I don't think much of, and the one in Lark Lane (something beginning with N) is just the Masonic painted black with red seats.
I used to live in Woolton and Gateacre and I'm sure the Elephant was only refurbished in the last 18 months.
Hope they don't do anything too grotesque to it as it could be a nice boozer to have an afternoon in.

Dunno, but it makes them sound a bit knobs.
It was ok for the Alma De Cuba but the former Dovedale sounds daft and when the main lights are switched on at the end of the night you can see it's slighty manky (like the duct tape on the ceiling above the bar.

To be honest, I didn't know he was going to be there.
I was taking snaps of the audience, and decided to take one from the front of the auditorium, and when I checked the result, there was Mike McGear, and I thought: "Oh dear, he thinks I've sought him out and taken a picture of him!"
When I was talking to somebody later I was told that Mike is now known as Mike McCartney.
I'll put together a set of the reopening of the Woolton and put them on my flickr page in the next couple of days.
I went to Sainsbury's tonight earlier and the Famous Elephant Is reopened as Casa Del Cocodrilo.:disgust:
The heads still not on and some dodgey gold coloured Lion Masks are on the side of the building Instead.:disgust:
Fact has mentioned the name of the other 2 names they have given to the pubs too.
One Is Elephant In Latin but Is nothing to do with the Famous Elephant.

Casa Del Cocodrilo Is In English, Marries Of The Crocodile.
Yet It's an Elephant Themed building.:disgust:

Why didn't Fargo Bar and Grill get called Marries Of The Crocodile.
I should become Tony Montana from Scarface and become a crimelord and run them out of Woolton.
Us English prefer our pubs called something like the old boot.

Your painting of buildings would of broke the Wavertree/Childwall peace Treaty and you would of been Imprisoned on site for going against a fellow Waverwall.

This old street does not seem to be under threat of a compulsory purchase and demolition order. m I wonder why? After all it's only probably a 100 years older than the "Welsh" streets of Toxteth and no doubt the Mason St houses have no cavity wall insulation etc. Every reason then to keep them then.

WOOLTON Village in south Liverpool is being made a “designated area” to combat anti-social behaviour.
Under the new powers, police will be able to move youths on and arrest those who return within 24 hours.
It will have designated area status until April 24. Police said they were taking the step because residents had complained about anti-social behaviour.
The zone incorporates Woolton Hill Road, Rose Brow, Acrefield Road, Out Lane, Hunts Cross Avenue, Manor Way, Manor Road, Speke Road, High Street, Allerton Road, Vale Road, Linkstor Road and Church Road, along with all roads, pavements and waste land within this perimeter.
Neighbourhood Inspector Steve Melia said: “The designated area has been introduced in response to concerns about gangs of youths who hang around the local area behaving in an anti-social way.
“We will not stand for the anti-social behaviour exhibited by a minority of young people in the neighbourhood.”
“High visibility patrols will ensure the designated area is not breached and its introduction will complement other tactics we are using to reduce anti social behaviour in the neighbourhood.
“We're determined to use every power available to us
Peter Eustance, chairman of Woolton Village Residents Association, welcomed the move.
He said: “Both we and the police viewed it as a last resort, but the village has suffered from new gangs travelling into the area from outside and causing problems.”

Had a nose around Reynolds Park at the weekend and again, this is somewhere where I have 'lived' on my bike, but you start to see things when you take things more slowly on foot.
Wanted to have a nose at the steps that I'd seen before but they didn't shed any light as to why they are there. I know there have been a few things demolished at Reynolds Park (including the old pub) but these steps don't seem to fit in with anything.

Am I correct that the grass at the top of the photograph is level with the top of the wall? If so the wall could have been part of a ha-ha, the eighteenth century landscaping device introduced by Charles Bridgeman (http://everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=1511870) at Stowe, a sunken trench and wall that kept farm animals away from the landowner's house, but maintain an unbroken vista when seen from the house. I remember there is a ha-ha around Calderstones House. The steps would have enabled a human to go from the pasture to the mansion house.

Hello Maggie
I would similarly love to see a current photograph of Camp Hill.
I attended a local fete there in 1960 to 1970 odd and know that reputedly Camp Hill was an ancient British fort though I am not sure that claim is exactly proven.
In any case, I will welcome any photographs of Camp Hill, Woolton, as it looks today or older images as well!

A few pics of Menlove ave, L25
Menlove Avenue is a "new" road. Vale Road was the main road in and out Woolton and was formerly called "Folly Vale". The road had a bend in it and carried on towards town right at the location where John Lennons house is. On the site of his house was a row of cottages where my GG Grandfatherlived, right on that spot!

03-29-2010, 03:35 PM
I wasn't sure if Menlove ave came under Woolton or Allerton but I looked up the address of 'Mendips' and it's listed as Woolton L25.
According to what I've read in books, John Lennon had relatives living in a place called 'The Cottage' described as being on Vale rd around the corner from Mendips, and was attached to a farmhouse.
Also, described was 'wasteland' at the end of the block from Mendips where John Lennon played as a kid - - would that be where the flats are now ? is the waste ground where the heights were built ?
Have you ever heard of Blackgates Lane ? It's not listed in the A to Z or any maps I've looked at.
Reading Julia Baird's book, she says they would often walk over to Menlove ave to visit John and his aunt at Mendips - they would often walk from the Springwood area (where they lived), down a country path at the side of Allerton Tower, which would bring them out on Menlove and on the opposite side of the road to the house. She called this country path Blackgates Lane. I've not heard of it before and can't find it on a map. I'm assuming it might be this public footpath on the attachments ?? does this footpath run up the side of the golf links or the back of Allerton Tower ?? I'm not too familiar with the area, but I know there is a dirt path right opposite New Heys school in the area where she lived (.. and where she went to school) which I'm assuming is this same path which takes you over to Menlove ?
To the right of the pic - there's a sign for public footpath ( sorry it's a bit tiny in the distance ! it's by the tree)

Yes there are paths across the golf course that bring you out in that area. Paul and John used to walk that way from Fortlin Road.
Lennons Uncle George (Mimi's Husband) worked at the family dairy which was in Allerton Road, just a few doors up from the pub as you turn off Menlove. The Dairy building is still there today.
Woolton Library has some old maps and you may be able to see the names of these paths on those Linda.

Your right about the pathway Lindy, it ran parallel to Woolton Rd, from Mather Ave to Menlove Ave, the golf course was on the left and the 'rear' of Allerton Towers was on the right, it was known to us as 'the Backgates' (not Blackgates)but I don't think this was it's name , more than likely got it from the Caretakers cottage of Allerton Priory that was situated on the corner of the pathway and Allerton Rd. The path should show on early maps as a continuation of Heath Rd., from Mather Ave, crossing Allerton Rd and ending at Menlove Ave., The New Hays school was actually built on Fulton's Farm, which was also in that area. My wife lived in Ravenna Rd off Heath Rd, and after we married we lived in Hurstlyn Rd which is at the bottom of Forthlin Rd. so it's well know area for me. Cheers

I've read every book going on John Lennon, but found Julia Baird's story 'Imagine This' really interesting and a different perspective.I couldn't put it down and may read it through again !
Maybe on a nice summer day I'll have a walk through the path from Springwood to Menlove - just to see. Had a quick look around there the other day while passing. Also, to have a look around Vale rd area.
Strawberry Field on Beaconsfield Road is not far too, nor Quarrybank school. In fact, into Woolton Village and you've got St. Peters church and the hall where they met at the garden fete in 1957.

Yeah, I've been there a few times.
I've been to Allerton Tower park quite a few times in the past, but havn't seen the foot paths crossing alongside to Menlove.
Julia Baird, talking about New Heys Grammar school, mentions the entrance having Tweedledee & Tweedledum. I was wondering what the significance was to the school ? Anyone know ? or have any photos ?
New Heys school is on the school page of my site. John didn't go there, did Julia?

This Quarry was where the sandstone came from to build the Anglican Cathedral. A housing estate now stands in the hollow that was made off Quarry Street.

I first trod on this public footpath back in 1978 after seeing it as part of the first ever Magical History Tour as it was then called which was part of the 2nd ever Beatles Convention (held in Mr Pickwicks as was the first a year earlier) The mesh wasn't up then, nor the climbing plants so high but you still get a good view from the top over the Woolton rooftops. You can see the footpath behind the houses on the 3rd pic.
