View Full Version : Liverpool 800 Birthday Celebrations
LIVERPOOL is going to celebrate its 800th birthday with the biggest party the city has ever seen. Councillors and culture officials are pressing ahead with plans for a special day of celebration and are anxious for your ideas.
Among suggestions on the table for August 2007 are street parties or one big bash, perhaps held at a large venue like Sefton Park. Liverpool council is putting together some ideas to mark "Year 800". It includes the possibility of turning Tuesday August 28, 2007 - the actual anniversary of the city's birth - into Liverpool Day, with everybody who is proud to be a Scouser playing a part.
* HOW do YOU think we should celebrate Liverpool Day?

Yes, we should have a 'Liverpool Day' - I'm all for it. :)
A GLOBAL street party will be staged to celebrate Liverpool's 800th birthday.
Every district in the city is to host major outdoor celebrations next year, topped off with a massive city centre event.
But parties marking the historic occasion will also span the globe with namesake cities in other continents being invited to join in as well as major ex-pat communities.
Today culture officials will announce the rest of their closely-guarded programme of events for the 07 birthday year, the final themed year in the run-up to Capital of Culture.
It is expected to be markedly different from this year's events, which focused on bringing innovative international performance groups in a bid to allow people in Liverpool to "broaden their horizons".
Instead, next year's programme is expected to centre on community-based events.
The announcement follows a difficult 10 days for the culture company after its artistic director, Robyn Archer was forced to quit. (Any coincidence again that all this news is coming out now she's gone?)
Council leader Warren Bradley and newly-appointed chief executive Colin Hilton have travelled to London to give Department of Culture, Media and Sport officials assurances that the plans were still on track.
Cllr Bradley said: "We set up the meeting before Robyn left so the DCMS could met Colin.
"But it was a good opportunity to talk about what has happened and they were really supportive."
The birthday year will include festivals and activities showcasing 800 years of the city's heritage.
The celebrations will culminate with a special Liverpool Day on the official birthday on Tuesday, August 28, the date King John signed Liverpool's Charter.
Part of the plans also include inviting the city's 80-year-olds to a lavish party at the town hall.
Thousands of schoolchildren will also be given a memento, possibly a medallion and a DVD of Liverpool's history.
King John's charter granted Liverpool certain privileges and from that date the small fishing village began to grow.
The expansion of the port led to a rapid development of the city with many fantastic buildings ranging from the docks themselves, to the civic splendour of St George's Hall.
The culture company refused to comment on the plans until the full announcement has been made today.

Nice to hear that following Robyn Archers departure everything appears to be running smoothly.Surely there must be someone of a high calibre that can replace her,i mean what credentials did the woman have in the first place?did anyone from Merseyside or sufficiently knowledgable about this area even come forward at the time that the job was advertised.
This calls for someone specialised, someone who has dedicated their life to Merseyside,a person at least well known & certainly respected by the general population so that they begin this job with everyone in support.
The sexuality of the individual is unimportant & shouldn't be an issue. But i cannot for the life of me imagine how someone thousands of miles away could have got this in the first place.
Does anyone know whether she had any connection with Liverpool at all.
Apologies if iam going over old ground here,i offer no excuses other than the fact that i live in Manchester & may be a little out of touch with things.:snf (41):

Terry she had no links with the city at all and it was down to David Henshaw why we had her in the first place,he has since been sacked. The favourite for the job was from Liverpool but he went for her instead and she has since been poached by London for the 2012 Olympics.:disgust:

Kev you're right it's an age old tactic in how to bury a bad news story, remember that woman who got nicked doing it in America after 9/11? how sick is that.:disgust: still though I'm glad to see that they have something lined up because it's been awfully quiet concerning our 800th Birthday celebrations so I'm just happy to see they are actually doing something.:PDT_Aliboronz_24:

^^I Love this^^
PARTIES in public squares and a pageant celebrating 800 years of Liverpool history will mark the city's official birthday next year.
Culture officials today promised Liverpool would be the 'world party capital' in 2007.
The birthday weekend will centre on six key events, including an 800th birthday civic service at St Nicholas parish church, followed by an historical pageant and procession through the city centre.
Communities who want to hold street parties will be offered free party kits and on Tuesday, August 28, the date King John signed Liverpool's first charter, all major public squares will host an afternoon of festivities.
Next year's Mathew Street Festival will focus on a retro/heritage theme and is expected to attract 400,000 people.
The long weekend will end with what is being billed as Europe's largest firework display, with rockets and pyrotechnics launched from the roofs of the city's landmark buildings.
Fireworks will be set off from at least six of Liverpool's major buildings simultaneously, making the display six times the size of that at Liverpool Cathedral in 2004.
It is estimated the display could cost £200,000.
Councillor Mike Storey, executive member for special initiatives, said today: "Liverpool's 800th birthday belongs to everyone who has a connection with the city.
"This is a party of the people, for the people, by the people.
"Few cities have been at the heart of so many epic events and achievements which have shaped the world and our Year of Heritage will be an unforgettable ride.
"We want as many people as possible to celebrate and showcase how their community shaped the city."
Culture bosses estimate more than two million people will celebrate Liverpool's birthday during 2007.
They hope to use the internet to encourage a global celebration with people adding their plans to the official Liverpool08 website.
Almost 300 events have been revealed so far to mark the milestone.
They include concerts, conferences, exhibitions, fairs, festivals, flower shows, gala openings, processions, re-enactments, talks and walks.
Extra events will be unveiled in September when the first official history of the city in almost a century - Liverpool 800: Culture, Character and History - will be published.
Many events will centre around landmark anniversaries including the abolition of the slave trade, achievements in public health and transport, and the 50th anniversary of the first time John Lennon and Paul McCartney met.
A £200,000 grants programme will help fund community projects that celebrate the Year of Heritage theme.
Applications will be accepted from this October.

THE ARTS
PAUL McCartney's Liverpool Oratorio is to be restaged as part of the artistic programme for 20 07.
The work will be performed in Liverpool Cathedral, where it was premiered 15 years ago, on June 26.
"We very much hope he will be able to be with us," said the conductor Carl Davis who collaborated with the ex-Beatle on what was his first classical piece of music.
The concert is part of a summer of Beatles-related events. The Royal Court is to stage a live version of the concept album, Sgt Pepper, in May and June, while the artist responsible for the iconic album cover, Sir Peter Blake, has a major exhibition at Tate Liverpool, opening on June 29.
Cavern City tours are also planning the ultimate Liverpool 800th birthday concert at the Empire Theatre on August 30.
The year that will see the completion of the new International Slavery Museum at Albert Dock - to mark the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in Britain - will feature a major exhibition at the Fact arthouse cinema by the Black Film Audio Collective.
The Everyman/Playhouse company also plans a nationally produced play about the freedom struggle prior to abolition.
There will also be a major premiere commemorating the May blitz of 1941, and another documentary drama based on the memories of world war 2 merchant navy veterans.
The citizenship lectures inspired by abolitionist William Roscoe, and run by Liverpool John Moores University, feature some star speakers.
The university's out-going chancellor, prime minister's wife Cherie Blair, is joined in the series by attorney general Lord Goldsmith, BBC newscaster George Alaigiah and broadcaster Esther Rantzen.
Ms Rantzen will be talking on the shocking issue of child abuse.
Among exhibitions at the Walker Gallery is a first retrospective of Liverpool-born science fiction artist Josh Kirby, who designed the first cover of Ian Fleming's Moonraker, the poster for Monty Python's Life of Brian and the cover illustrations for Terry Pratchett's Discworld series.
THE mythical Liver Bird, symbol of the city, is also the symbol of Liverpool's 800th birthday.
Revealed for the first time today, the 1207-2007 logo will be available for people to use free of charge to publicise their birthday events.
An invitation is now open to anyone with a Liverpool connection to join in the festivities and log on to www.liverpool08.com (http://www.liverpool08.com) to tell the world of their plans.
They can also use the special 2007 logo which can be downloaded from the 08 website.
Humble start
UNTIL the early 1200s Liverpool was only a humble settlement attached to the great Manor of West Derby and part of the administrative unit known as West Derby Hundred.
King John obtained possession of Liverpool from Henry Fitzwarin in exchange for other land on August 23, 1207.
Five days later he issued the 'charter' at Winchester, inviting settlers to come to Liverpool and promising certain privileges to those that did.
Liverpool was created a privileged port, giving it exemption from certain dues and taxes designed to encourage trading.
Other charters followed through the centuries with the royal charter in 1880 granting Liverpool city status.

The announcement of events for 2007 is utter b*llocks. It is re-hashed existing events, wrapped in a new brand and logo, which the culture company hope we won't notice. there is nothing very new here. we will be having lots of street parties and a big fireworks display. good. but is that it? is this going to stamp liverpool's 800 year history on the consciousness of Britain, never mind europe or the rest of the world? is it buggery.
and it seems some people are falling for this stuff. what a terrible lack of ambition and vision. utterly appalling.
Are Liverpool's 2007 plans good enough? Key highlights include the Mathew Street Festival, which will celebrate Liverpool's unrivalled musical heritage as the World Capital of Pop. More than 400,000 people are expected to come to the city for that one event alone.
But isn't this something that happens every year? Where's the big event we were promised for 2007?
A PEOPLE’S party for 800 is being planned to celebrate Liverpool’s 2007 birthday year.
Culture officials say most of those invited to the grand event at St George’s Hall would be ordinary members of the public.
It is understood Cllr Paul Clark, who is due to be Lord Mayor during the 800th anniversary year, does not want his ceremonial Lord Mayor’s banquet to be packed with simply the "great and the good".
Cllr Mike Storey, the city’s executive member for special initiatives, said: "He’s very keen to open it up so anyone throughout the city can apply to attend." source (http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/0100news/breakingnews/tm_objectid=17840558%26method=full%26siteid=50061% 26headline=city%2dparty%2dopen%2dto%2dall-name_page.html)...
FIREWORKS and a symphony of bells ringing out across the city will ensure an electric atmosphere for Liverpool’s 800th birthday celebrations.
The display on December 31 to herald the beginning of 2007 and the first ever city-wide bell ringing symphony are among the highlights of the anniversary year unveiled yesterday.
As well as high-profile events like The Turner Prize and The Royal Variety Performance, the city will host a year long calendar of events focussing on Liverpool’s history.
Last night, the leader of Liverpool City Council, Cllr Warren Bradley said: “Liverpool’s 800th anniversary provides the perfect platform to showcase the city’s renaissance in advance of 2008, as well as the talent and creativity we are world famous for.
“These creative highlights throw a wonderful spotlight on our heritage and the new Liverpool that is emerging.’’ continues (http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/liverpooldailypost/news/regionalnews/tm_headline=fireworks-to-bring-in-birthday-year%26method=full%26objectid=18271056%26siteid=50 061-name_page.html).....

Celebrations for Liverpool's 800th birthday in 2007 will include a look back at its role in the slave trade and a commemoration of its abolition.
The year will kick off with a New Year firework display in the city centre, and will culminate in Liverpool 800 Day on 28 August.
The day will celebrate Liverpool's first Charter by King John in 1207.
Other events include the re-opening of a renovated St George's Hall and the introduction of a new coat of arms.
The hall's re-opening will be marked with bells across the city being rung, including at both cathedrals, on the municipal clocks and ships' sirens.
St George's Hall will be officially re-opened in 2007
The city will also host the Royal Variety Performance and a major retrospective of British pop artist Peter Blake at Tate Liverpool.
A new opera will be staged in Liverpool by internationally-renowned composer James MacMillan.
Council Leader Warren Bradley said it was "the perfect platform to showcase the city's renaissance".
The city is preparing for its year as European Capital of Culture in 2008.
Jason Harborow, Chief Executive of Liverpool Culture Company, said: ''The calendar of events for 2007 is hugely impressive - and manages to strike a balance of thought-provoking art, mixed with major populist celebrations.
"I'm delighted that it also reflects the diversity and heritage of all our communities, which is a great testament to the continuing culture of tolerance that being a world port cultivated.''

Around the 'Pool in 800 years
05 February 2007
http://www.ljmu.ac.uk/MKG_Global_Images/play.jpg
Second year Drama students in LJMU's School of Media Critical and Creative Arts are staging a play about the history of Liverpool entitled 'Around the 'Pool in 800 Years'. The production will be staged in the newly refurbished Concert Hall at St. George's Hall on 22, 23 and 24 February 2007.
The production was the brainchild of the Drama tutors David Llewellyn, Paula Simms and Andrew Sherlock and the whole play is written and organised by the 55-strong cast of Drama students. Production Manager, Caroline Morris says: "The play is very topical with Liverpool celebrating its 800th birthday this year. We will cover all aspects of the City's history from King John's Charter and early city feuds to Slavery right up to modern times."
Tickets are available from the Royal Court box office (Tel: 0870 787 1866) at a cost of £7 per ticket (£3 for concessions).

IN the beginning, King John said let there be seven streets and this was done. Now they could play a leading role in Liverpool's cultural future. David Charters reports. . . .
The eruption came from the chair occupied by Christina Clarke, an eminent local historian.
"It is not a-a-a bllloo...dd...y...ch-ch-char... uh-uh ... I don't want to hear that word," she said, blustering, her indignation rising like the steam from a marathon-runner's blister pad.
"It was not a charter! Will everybody stop using this word! I want the council to stop using this word!
"They use it in every book. Could you make sure that it's a Letters Patent. Liverpool did not get a charter until Henry III's time. It's a Letters Patent!"
From "The City's Magnificent Seven" on icLiverpool (http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/liverpooldailypost/specialfeatures/tm_headline=the-city-s-magnificent-seven%26method=full%26objectid=18579168%26siteid=5 0061-name_page.html)
I wonder if "David Charters" has any stake in us continuing to call it a charter? :celb (23):
And by the way, I very much hope that the idea is not going to be implanted that King John actually did say there had to be seven streets, because my hunch is that the seven streets either grew up in the centuries following King John, or else were in place before him.

Interesting snippets and photos from the 1907 Pageant held at Wavertree Park, Edge Lane,
http://www.old-merseytimes.co.uk/lplpageant1907.html
The council seem to have renamed this park "Botanic Park" these days. Bit of a misnomer really as the flowers have long since gone. The Liverpool Echo calls this area "Kensington".

Hi Ged and Sloyne
Yes the charter of King John (http://www.yoliverpool.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2679) (or letters patent to be technical about it) is dated "the twenty-eighth day of August in the ninth year of our reign." So presumably you're right, Ged, and the anniversary will be August 28, 2007.
Chris
I think that's the date that the council etc have things lined up for. I know the St. George's Hall is re-opening today but that's because it's our Patron Saints day, otherwise it's a very low key day and i'm sure the powers that be wouldn't let the 'Official' day pass like so. Chippie, i'm only 70.
The bells are ringing out today and one woman in her Sefton Park High Rise has the Georges flag out for all to see. St. Lukes (although now bell-less have some ringers with hooters, horns and alum temp bells) - The Cathedrals are also taking part of course. Is Jona up there with em'?

COMMUNITY groups in Liverpool are being given advice on how to organise their very own birthday party for the city.
The August bank holiday weekend marks 800 years since King John (http://www.yoliverpool.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3388&highlight=king+johns+hunting+lodge) signed Liverpool’s first Royal Charter (http://www.yoliverpool.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2679), and the Culture Company is encouraging people to get in the party mood by staging their own celebrations.
The Culture Company is holding workshops to ensure the festivities go without a hitch.
They will cover licences, insurance, risk assessment, stewarding, barriers, traffic management, fire safety and security.
Council leader Cllr Warren Bradley said: “Our 800th birthday is a milestone , and it is really important that everyone is given the opportunity to join in the party.
“Community events are a great way to make sure the celebrations reach right across the city, giving all of our citizens the chance to mark this very special occasion.
“These workshops will ensure people are given the fundamentals of how to organise a safe, fun event for their family, friends and neighbours, and give Liverpool an 800th birthday to remember.”
Workshops will be held on the following dates:
June 12 at Spellow library, County Road, Walton, from 10am-12pm.
June 19 at Toxteth library, Windsor Street, from 10am-12pm (BSL interpreted).
June 22 at Allerton library, Allerton Road, from 1pm-3pm.
July 4 at Childwall library, Childwall Road, from 10am-12pm.
July 5 at Norris Green library, Townsend Avenue, from 1pm-3pm.
Places for the free workshops are limited and will be first come first served.
Contact Phil Taylor at the Culture Company by emailing phil.taylor@liverpool.gov.uk or calling 0151-233 4399.
The Culture Company has also produced a guide to help people plan successful events. For your copy of Event Planning In Liverpool: A Guide For Event Organisers, download it at www.liverpool08.com or call 0151-233 2008.

Hello poem800
Is this connected to Liverpool Saga (http://www.bbc.co.uk/liverpool/content/articles/2007/05/18/capital_culture_liverpool_saga_feature.shtml)--800 lines of poetry to celebrate the eight centuries of the city sponsored by BBC Radio Merseyside--or is it completely separate? I suspect it is separate but please clarify. If it is separate, how do you justify what you are doing when there is this other effort going on as well?
Thanks

Hi all
As noted above, the Liverpool 800 Poems site is looking for 800 poems to celebrate the city's 800th birthday. They are almost an eighth of the way there. I have had a number of my city-related poems accepted. Clare Kirwan and Roger Cliffe-Thompson are among the other name poets who have contributed so far.
I encourage all of you to put something together: a memory, a vignette, some Liverpool humour in poem form. For those of you who are reading this and have not been to Liverpool write about what the city means to you.
The Liverpool 800 site is at http://www.poem800.com/ -- go the poems page, picture of the Liver Building. The coloured squares have poems that have been accepted, the white squares are available for you to add a poem. Good luck.

Speaking from experience, it's all an almighty joke.
Our school still hasn't got enough coins despite our "Culture Co-ordinator" contacting them seven times.
We bought in the official artists as recommended by the Culture Company who produced a load of cack with our kids and expected to get paid £600. We've got an award called ArtsMark and were awarded gold status (the highest) and the work these artists did looked like something removed from a baby's nappy and smeared on a canvas.
At a local level it all seems very disappointing...........
They need to get their act together or there could be some embarrased faces on Merseyside:rolleyes:

I was just saying today that the 700th celebrations in 1907 seemed better than whats on the cards for us in 2007.
Are these the artists from The Tate Liverpool by any chance Matt?
No, but i think they are, inevitably, related to someone from the Culture Company...jobs for the boys and all that!!
I was just saying today that the 700th celebrations in 1907 seemed better than whats on the cards for us in 2007.
I know, I despair that when the eyes of the world are on us and we can highlight all the positives in Liverpool, it will end up going pear-shaped!:disgust:
It's not our fault.
Our kids where able to tell their artists more about the buildings they were focussing on than they could.
Non of our artists were even from Liverpool! Great init? Teaching our kids about their heritage!!
They produced nice work though which is currently displayed in the tate.

Hi All
This project now well on its way with one hundred poems so far accepted and posted. There is still time for you to write a poem and get it in. See details above and good luck.
Chris
It's all a bit doom and gloom isn't it.
I Love the fact that there are people on boards who are getting paid to come up with idea's for the celebrations and all they do is put funding money into their own pockets or pockets of people they know.
We had an Idea for a studio about three years ago. I've been a music producer for many years worked in most of the local studio's trying to get bands through etc. While I was working in LIPA, it dawned on me that we could get a version of this not just for music but for creativity in general, 'a creative umberella' if you will.
Run by local people whilst bringing in other influences from around the world. Have a showcase that could be fed via broadband to our A&R friends in the states, management etc. Honestly it had some groundbreaking idea's that hadn't been done in any city around the UK.
So we attempted to get some funding hopefully opening for the 800th celebrations / Capital of Culture. There were plenty of buildings at the time we could have aquired. We spoke to capital of culture people, we spoke to Brussells, the Arts council. Trust me, I had meeting after meeting. The business plan for finance was brilliant, although considering these people were financial wizards they struggled with the principle of putting any profits back into the artists themselves.
Anyway, after these long negotiations and meeting's nothing materialised. It all went very quiet, we spoke to one guru who had been brought in from the Glasgow capital of culture company who was strangely now part of our's. He took all the information and plans saying that he was also working for private investors and this was just what they wanted to be part of Liverpool's Creative scene for the capital of culture 2008.
It turned out it was as a year later a franchise opened up in London highlighting every aspect of our plans as the 'new creative revolution' only for a private company to make profit on. I'd never trust any so called troubleshooter again. As for the council official who arranged the meeting, He seem's to have moved on into the private sector.
Our 2007 Birthday bash? meh, I'm washing my hair that weekend.
Peace and Happiness........Gaz

I think it is a very good thing for the kids to get involved and get to know the city's history and tradition this way. Here's a clever limerick by three of the kids:
Ringo Starr
There once was a man called Ringo
Who really liked playing bingo
He was good at the drums
But he used his thumbs
And a pink feather from a flamingo
By Joe O'Brien, Alex Loy, Eve Williams, Sean Ho Age 7
And here's one of mine. As you see, if you read down the letters on the left hand side, it reads, "Happy Birthday, Liverpool." I also should here thank Mr. Gerard Fleming who took my wife Donna and I around the city's Beatles sites and which helped to give me ideas for some of the lines in the poem.

Hi Kev
While I am not totally persuaded by what is being done in the campaign to celebrate the city's birthday, e.g., just handing out party kits with balloons to different communities, there is on the other hand enough happening that everyone should know it is the city's 800th birthday and maybe, after all, that's enough!
All the best
Chris
I share your sentiments Chris.
I will say though that the 'school' celebrations have given teachers the opportunity to develop a sense of pride and appreciation of Liverpool's heritage from infants -> seniors city-wide. Certainly in our cities Primary Schools, this week will be the finale in a term long celebration of Liverpool.
It has given me the opportunity to indulge myself completely in the preparation and organization where I work.

Thanks
Chris
In regard to my above query, Roger from the Poem800 Project has replied as follows:
1. In answer to the question about the 800 line poem. We are not in competition and no it's nothing to do with it.
Poem800 was dreamed up before theirs but nevertheless we have linked their site to ours from the beginning when our site was uploaded (it would be nice if they would carry a link to ours) and it has no relevance as theirs is one poem which allows poets to contribute four lines to an existing poem. It's a great idea but ours allows poets to put up a complete poem on their own theme.
2. Also there is no reason why poets can't enter both and finally surely this is REALLY the best thing that's happened for poetry in Liverpool since Adrian Henri in the 60's.
Cheers,
Roger
Also from the project I received the following information:
Hi all Poem 800 poets.
Brilliant!
We are now just over the TWO hundred mark and .... its all down to you. Thanks
Only 600 to go! Its hitting the Echo on Friday night (so they tell us) and the Daily's next week, apart from other groups now getting behind our effort.
Anyway its great news... 203 is fantastic never, ever dreamed we would get to this amount in so short a time... so if you can please keep spreading the word... and let's get going for the rest.
Bestest,
Billy and Roger
MORE than 1,500 performers will take part in a spectacular pageant to mark Liverpool’s 800th birthday.
The two-hour parade on August 28 will begin at St George’s Hall before making its way along the Churchill Way flyover, Dale Street, Church Street, Lord Street, Whitechapel, St John’s Lane and Lime Street.
The performers will be led by a 15ft “giant”.
Communities are being asked to provide myths, legends and stories about the city that will bring the giant – designed by arts company Strange Cargo – to life.
Council leader Warren Bradley said: “August 28 is in many ways the climax of 2007, and we want the people of Liverpool at the heart of the celebrations.”
Artists are setting up camp in World Museum Liverpool and encouraging members of the public to come to special workshops this weekend, on Saturday from 11am to 1pm and 2-4pm, and on Sunday from 11am to 1pm.
On Friday, August 3, there will also be a public open day from noon to 3pm when people will be able to suggest a name for the giant. source (http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/liverpool-news/local-news/2007/07/19/a-happy-birthday-pageant-100252-19476650/)
CULTURE officials are ordering more street party packs after being swamped with hundreds of requests. Read (http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/liverpool-news/local-news/2007/07/19/party-fever-as-city-goes-wild-for-800th-100252-19476662/)

Hi all
As anticipated, the 800 Poems Project for Liverpool's 800th Birthday received the added boost of publicity in today's Liverpool Echo with the article shown below. I understand from organizer Roger Cliffe-Thompson that they are also now up to 332 poems so in theory they should be able to accumulate the required (or hoped for!) 800 poems in time for the city's big anniversary date of August 28.

Hi Tony
I think there's a lot of good poetry accumulated so far that really captures the flavour of the city. It will be very interesting to see how the ultimately collected 800 poems shape up and how they will reflect the traditions and character of the city. I think it will end up being an imposing description of the city of Liverpool and its 800-year history. Thanks again, Tony, for doing your part in the effort!

Heart, heart of sea
Fullness of your name, Mersey.
Your pace, to be going and to come, to come, to jump the top of your own element:
To defoliate with your force the flower of salt and vertex of foam of your laugh of phosphorus:
To shake off as an immense, brave, torn mane, to double in balance of serpent:
The sky to swallow in your down of water!!!
The wave raises in hollow and hard arch;
It shocks the steel of your foam in the anvil;
Hiss cut by your electrical counterfoil.
It roars in the height, exploits your lung with bitter blood, sick and warm flower.
Lightning throws itself to the birth of your brilliancy:
It opens again the angle of the thunder and is stretched nake and crystalline.
You sing the silly wave with your choir of voices and in the flute of the wind the snail laughs.
In order that my singing of hope was sinking.
In order that my bitterness was dying to the return of your magic noise, I looked at your gray meat - gray of soul and of distress - and your foam of cloud.
The anchor of the Mersey!! The arms raised in cross!!
And you raised the whole dark thought of storm in the night, to your brilliancy without shades.
That are closed the eyelids for the weight of the dream!
Your loneliness of birds. Heart, heart of sea. Infinite Mersey. Only.
Peace and smoke of heart I enter and of the rose...

More than 300 street and community parties are among a series of events planned in Liverpool to mark the city's 800th birthday next month.
The city celebrates its anniversary on 28 August but events will kick off four days earlier with the start of the annual Mathew Street Festival.
Bank Holiday Monday will see hundreds of community parties staged, followed by a host of events on Tuesday.
There will be a civic procession, a pageant, music and fireworks.
The pageant will feature more than 800 performers in costume representing icons past and present from the city and the firework display is set to involve many of Liverpool's historic buildings.
The celebrations mark the 800th anniversary of King John granting the city its first charter.

Hello all
Still hoping that members will add to the Yo poem in celebration of the Yo Liverpool website and Kev's great creation.
Meanwhile, an update. I am presently heavily involved both in myself contributing poems in honor of the 800-year history of my native city of Liverpool, as well as helping behind the scenes in terms of proofreading and fact checking.
Organizers Roger Cliffe-Thompson and Billy Moon report that they presently have 497 poems collected so far with 303 to go to meet the target of 800 for the city's 800th anniversary on August 28.
To hear an interview with Roger and Billy go to Radio Merseyside Interview (http://www.sparrowsteeth.com/billy/media/miscalanious/) .
New Jersey poet Laurie Byro and New Yorker George Wallace are among the poets who have contributed to the project. If you are interested in contributing a poem, go to http://www.poem800.com/ .
There are also talks underway to have a possible Liverpool - New York video or podcast link to celebrate the Liverpool anniversary and the links between the two cities. If things work out as planned, simultaneous readings will take place in New York and Liverpool later this year. Watch this space. http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1200/965189084_1181a9248e_o.gif

DRUMMERS are needed for a record-breaking tribute to Liverpool on its 800th birthday.
Organisers hope the August 28 drum-athon at St George’s Plateau could put the city in the Guinness Book of Records.
Mutual Arising, which co-ordinates community cultural projects, is looking for 800 drummers to perform outside St George’s Hall on the night.
A spokesman said: “We’re going for a world record of people playing, although it didn’t start off that way.
“Anyone can take part as the rhythm we have created is very simple to learn but is very powerful to hear.
“The event is open to everybody of all ages. I’ve got a five-year-old daughter and she picked up the top-line pattern and was playing it within 10 minutes.
“You don’t even need a proper drum. We’ll show people how to play the parts and make drums from cardboard boxes.”
He added: “We want people to be excited about this and to join in.”
African, Latin American and even Orange Lodge drummers are involved.
The event has been two years in the planning and organisers have contacted the Guinness Book of Records to make sure someone can attend on the night.
Free workshops will take place to help create the biggest beat in city history.
The event itself will be filmed and feature in the Mutual Arising Spirit of Liverpool movie, due for release in 2008.
There will also be a “Drum 200” event on Otterspool Promenade the week before to mark the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade.
To join in the birthday drumming event, e-mail stev@mutualarising.com or visit www.mutualarising.com

Just wanted to ask you to remember this. although it is our birthday it is also 800 years since king John used Liverpool to ship troops over to Ireland and up the pressure on them. Remember the Irish this weekend.
I was born in Liverpool. My family comes from Ireland as does my ancestors. although English i consider myself partly Irish. My roots are Irish as is my blood and genes. plenty others too in Liverpool. lets remember them too this weekend.

Hi Tony
By the way we do need to finalize our poem on Yo Liverpool to put on the Liverpool 800 Poems site.... they are less than a hundred to go!!! I will get the thread moving again.
I thought, given your Irish connection you might enjoy the following which I added to the site:
Sailing Day: Liverpool, Tuesday, July 16th, 1833
I am not usually very particular about dates;
but, as there is an odd coincidence connected with
the 16th, I desire to note it. On this day, then,
about 3 P.M. I was rumbled from Bold-street
down to St. George's Dock, accompanied
by a few friends, who were resolute to extend their
kindness to the latest limit time and tide,
those unyielding agents, might allow.
Arrived at the ship's side, I found
a number of my own poor countrymen,
agricultural speculators, filling up a leisure
moment before seeking harvest, in seeing
"Who in the world was going to America, all that way. . ."
Disposing amongst the boys the few shillings I had left
in my pocket, I jumped on board the packet-
ship Europe, without cross or coin, saving only
a couple of luck-pennies, the one an American gold
eagle, the present of an amiable gentlewoman;
the other a crooked sixpence, suspended
by a crimson ribbon, the offering of a fair
"maid of the inn," given to me on the very eve
of sailing-day with many kind wishes,
all of which have been realized.
By Tyrone Power*
* This reminiscence by Irish actor Tyrone Power (1795-1841), great grandfather of the movie actor of the same name, recollects one of a number of cross-atlantic trips the actor made to appear on the American stage. During one such ocean crossing, on March 17, 1841, he was lost at sea when his ship sank on a passage back to England.

The latest update from organizer Roger Cliffe Thompson:
We have 717 poems collected so far, only 83 to go until the City's birthday next Tuesday when we hope to have accumulated 800 poems.
And this from me:
Once again, I would encourage anyone who would like to submit a poem on their thoughts or remembrances of Liverpool to do so at http://www.poem800.com/
And we need to continue with our own poem on Yo! Feel free to chip in anyone.... please! Not much time to get it in!!!
This is what we have so far
Kev Keegan was a footballer of great renown
but now there's another Kev you should know.
He runs a Scouse internet forum that's grown,
a place to celebrate our city and not to moan.
Cheers, Kev, for providing so many fine threads
-- they keep us all busy and out of our beds;
so much you can learn, so much still to come.
Yes! Yo Liverpool rocks -- it's filled full of fun!
We post pics of Scouseland for all to admire:
of Liver Birds, river, parks, towers, and spires;
aye, so much to see, all from grotty to pretty!
Just love to show off our so great luvly city!
A laugh a day, does you the world of good,
-- and on Yo Liverpool, you definitely would:
the banter, the legpulls, all crease me up too,
once you have joined, you will stick like glue.
Yo is addictive and funny, serious, just great
for assistance and info, records and dates.
We've photographs, flickr, slides and cine,
but we've yet to see one of Kev in his Mini.
Great posters, great jokes, plus challenges, too,
puzzles, and games. I like it! So, mate, will you.
Though we might go away for a bit, we return,
'cos for the fun on Yo shortly we always yearn.
Any more, folks??? Who will add another verse? You?
Chris

Hi all
Just a note that this project has just about wrapped up in time for Liverpool's 800th birthday tomorrow with almost 800 poems now collected. See the list of poems at http://www.poem800.com/. You will see that the works posted cover a wide range of topics and styles of work, including one in honor of Kev and Yo Liverpool, "Cheers to Kev at the Yo Liverpool Forum." (http://www.poem800.com/liver.php?poem=399) Thanks to those of you who contributed either to the Yo poem or who posted a poem or two. You have helped make the effort a brilliant success!
All the best

Thank you Liverpool for being a wonderful home and family, from a Bootle born and bred lad. Proud of you; hope the pride is returned.
God Bless and may you last another eight hundred years, to bring joy, pride, work and friendships to all those who follow our footprints in the sands of your lovely beaches.
OF KINGS WHO WALK AMONG KINGS
The Liverpudlian will balance sentiment against pride.
Affection for humble beginnings will give pause for fond reflection,
Whereas false pride will never break the stride of thought;
For the heart's memory is long as the blink of the egotist's eyelid is short.
He will respect the ways of strangers but never borrow or compare their ways.
The amateur will surpass professionalism, yet as a professional he will retain the common touch.
He will banter; never with malice but with a gentle shared joy, for such is the virtue of contentment.
The warmth of company will fan the flames of his eloquence for which one must be equal or gracefully withdraw.
He is generous because he instinctively knows that the pleasure of giving,
Is greater than the pain of sacrifice.
If you are a master of your craft he will rejoice in your artistry,
Unless it be corrupted by condescension, when,
You will be reminded that you are not the one-eyed man in the land of the blind, but the common man bearing a gift.
His is a city where there is no ugliness; just beauty in different forms.
His specialness earns reproach from the envious, respect from the dispassionate, and admiration from those of generous heart.
Amused by criticism fair but stung by comment unjust, he hesitates to pronounce on others.
False pride is the magnet for his irreverence, pomposity sharpens his wit and the ridiculous nourishes his sense of humour.
Bearing his gifts with modesty he is blind to both his shortcomings and his qualities.
The Liverpudlian has but one fault. He takes his own greatness for granted.
But then, such is the lot of kings who walk among kings.
Here's some I took:

Can I echo that sentiment. There is no such thing as a Plazzy Scouser. If you are proud to be one of us then you are in and we look after our our own.

I wasn't able to spend the full day in the city centre, but from what I did see, it was absolutely fantastic.
I was in the city centre at lunch time and then again around 7-8pm and at times I was there the atmosphere was just brilliant. At lunch time, the crowds were unbelievable - the city was packed. By tonight the many visitors to the city were filling the bars and relaxing after a beautiful day.
Today's ECHO was fantastic too, definitely worth keeping hold of as a momemto of this historic day.
I went for a drink at the Beehive (Mt. Pleasant) this evening and then went across to Wallasey Town Hall to watch the fireworks. A wonderful display that went on for at least 15 minutes, absolutely fantastic.
A win for the footie fans too. And Z-Cars at Anfield, what a tribute. I loved that.
A beautiful day, HAPPY BIRTHDAY LIVERPOOL! Here's to the next 100 years.

Great pics. I watched the fireworks from my mates rooftop terrace on top of Everton Brow, a great view of the four different sites. I think the Catholic cathedral had some of the best fireworks, mainly due to its shape.
I hope to some more great pics being posted today, and seeing what it looks like on TV tonight (if they remembered to film it!!)

Wow! Thanks, Kat. Sorry I missed it now. Heard one hell of a row last night; wondered what on earth it could be . . . then realised. Awesome reverberations, sound; looks quite spectacular. Knew someone would photograph it. Appreciated, lady.

They were amazing!! Four different locations all at the same time. I took lots of pictures, but was too tired when I got in to look at most of them. Here's a couple though...

kebabman, yours came out really well! I was late too, unpacking my kit after they'd already started. Was well worth it though, regardless of the pictures. The displays were awesome.
