Discovered an old (1893) photograph album, somebody obviously doing the European Tour in late Victorian Times, three or four interesting Liverpool shots included. Will post as I progress.

Really? Still can't see it. Seems a rather large expanse of land in front of it.

I thought St Nicks was bombed during the war and was rebuilt. Could be wrong of course, again.

It's where the Liver buildings are now,Georges dock,as it was then, about where the floating roadway was.

not easy to make out at that size :)

The building on the right reminds me of Hamilton Sq train station

Cool pic btw, beegee

Maybe, but where is the church if it's Hamilton Square. It does fit St Nicholas church.

oh, it isn't hamilton sq.

Got a feeling james st station used to look similar (probably totally wrong on that one)

Do you mean the old James Street? Certainly not the one we all know and love.

yeah, I mean originally. Do we love the current james st station ? I like the old entrance and path down on water st, I like the old platform we get to use once in a while but overall the station is a hovel

If you look at all of the underground stations, doesn't that apply to all of them. They were all very nice in the seventies but now they need a lick of paint. The outside of James Street Is ok, might need a steam clean.

Deffo St. Nick's. With old Tower Building on its right. The building between them, at the back of the churchyard- don't know what it's called- is still standing today too. Got another Liver Bird on the front.

Re the bombing reference. Yes, the nave was destroyed in WW2 and rebuilt in the 50s. The original tower fell down on a Sunday morning in (I think) 1815, killing a lot of the congregation. The tower we have now (and very beautiful it is too) is by Thomas Harrison of Chester. (He was responsible for many of Chester's most notable buildings- the Northgate, the rebuilding of the castle, the Grosvenor Bridge etc.. a busy boy indeed.) Old pics show the old tower as much plainer with a flat top.

So although St. Nick's is of very ancient foundation, little of the building we see today is of any great antiquity.

Lovely picture, by the way. Any chance of posting a bigger version? I'm intrigued by that serious-looking line of coaches in the foreground...

The building between St Nicholas and Tower building is Mersey Chambers home of T & J Harrisons shipping company.

Indeed it is - 13 days to the Harrison Line reunion dinner and counting.

Anyone know what Mersey Chambers is used for these days?
