Hello Chris,

Many thanks for your support. Be sure to make yourself at home and take your time around our growing site.

I'm a Garston lad myself and am too interested in the history of the area. There is a Garston thread with info here (http://www.yoliverpool.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1421).

So you must have gone to one of the local schools then?

Kev

I can't tell you much. I was only about 11 years of age when it happened. I was living in Hunts Cross at the time and was in the back garden when it hit. All I remember was the bang and the ground shuddering followed by the thick black plume of smoke rising. I think it was a Cambrian Airways Viscount that was involved.

World of the strange: The Mothaks air crash

THE Mothaks air crash occurred in Speke, July 20, 1965, at just after 6.17pm when a Cambrian Airways' Vickers Viscount crashed into a mothball-making factory. There was slight drizzle, but otherwise good visibility.

Two women working overtime were killed, but, had the crash been 30 minutes earlier, hundreds would have died. Luckily, the plane was flying empty from the Isle of Man.

The aircrew were highly experienced, but overshot the runway, banked sharply and hit the factory. The resulting mushroom cloud and shock waves could be experienced for miles around. Several inquiries failed to establish the cause.

"Before the crash, a woman called Mrs James kept calling the airport and wrote to newspapers worried about cloud over the factory," says Tom Slemen (http://www.slemen.com/).

"She dreamt again and again about this tragedy and it matched the location. People told her in dreams about the Mothaks crash."

I remember there used to be air shows at the airport and the Red Arrows and stuff used to do displays - There was a terrible accident with a parachute not opening once - I don't know when this was. We never had to pay to watch the air shows as we lived (and still do) very close. I was around in 1965 but very small - I remember Liverpool winning the cup that year but I don't remember that crash happening, although I have heard of it. There must have been a big bang and a lot of commotion but I don't remember it going on - I remember Blackwells going up though - everyone was brought out with blackened faces - we all stood by Tudwall Street and watched.

Welcome to the forum Matchworks - another bladdy mudman!!

One of the women killed that day (June Stimpson) was married to my great grandmother's brother.
Had the plane came down 30 mins earlier I might not have been here to type this message as both my great grandmother and my grandmother both worked there also.

Talking about air shows, do you remember when the Galaxy landed at Liverpool
When you went through it you got a free Galaxy bar. Needless to say everyone took advantage of the generosity, as you do!!

my aunt, Elizabeth Farrell was the other lady killed in the crash, we where told that she had finished her shift and was due to go home, and another lady, who was due to carry on working felt ill, as she was pregnant, so my aunt said she would do her shift for her, and the pregnant lady went home......the rest is history.
