Great pics as usual. Thought the first one was Birkenhead North, till I had a second look.

Gave my new steed a ride around the wirral, the seats not the original but is more comfortable than the racing type that was on it.

Now that's how train stations should look. Not like half of the ones over this side of the water.

They're not all like that over here. A lot of them are just as bad as everywhere else.

oh, I know. but there's alot more untouched stations over that side. Even Green Lane has something cool about it. They worst example of mordernisation I can think of is Waterloo, it used to be nice, now it's reminds me of one of them farm animal bath things they get pushed through.

Won't be long before they all end up modernised for 'improvements' sake

Reckon it's to do with budgets. They gotta spend it on something. So they look for things that cause the least offence. Then we all shout cos we found it better untouched. Sometimes a lick of paint works wonders.

True, the other thing I've noticed lately is how rusty the 'new' stations are getting. I would have thought they'd stay in good nick for longer than they have done

Just how I remember it, had quite a few years getting on and off there. Think I've posted it before, but oh well. This is the only pic I ever took there.

There's loads of broken off girders in the walls, I've always wondered what it used to look like. Did the line on the the bridge by there, have a station here too ?

Hi Smurf - no it didn't, as far as I know the next station on the Old BJ/GWR line was at Rock Ferry

I'm very fond of the style of Green Lane station. Scouseinmanc is quite right; there was never a main line station here. The line did indeed run above the right-hand wall in the picture, and at the bridge over Green Lane it was 8 tracks wide. The nearest station was Birkenhead Town, about 600 yards to the North, roughly where the Rock Retail Park is. The line then entered the tunnel to Birkenhead Woodside. Town station closed to passengers in 1945.
