View Full Version : What's YOUR best five British songs of all time?
Scousemouse 09-12-2005, 10:13 PM The 1967 Beatles track A Day In The Life has been hailed the best British song of all time.
OK, So what do you consider the best five British songs of all time? Here's mine - ask me tomorrow and they'll all be different.
Penny lane — The Beatles
Your Song — Elton John
All Right Now — Free
It's Different For Girls — Joe Jackson
Addicted To Love — Robert Palmer
"Penny Lane — The ultimate sonic rendition of what it means to be Scouse. :)
Yes, I know they're all as old as the hills, but I consider British popular music went down the tubes when Stock, Aitken, Waterman came on the scene and pushed further down by the likes of the 'Spice Girls'. I've always preferred a broad range of American music anyway — sorry.

Hi, Howie, as you're obviously a Cohen fan, have you given a listen to Jennifer Warnes' album Famous Blue Raincoat? Although it's close on twenty years since it was released it's still a great album.

"In late 1986, Cohen achieved a new dimension of fame when Jennifer Warnes released her cover album Famous Blue Raincoat. Cohen and Warnes had, of course, known each other for years. Singing on 1972 and 1979 tours, she had become one of his principal backup singers, adding a lilting voice to offset his gravely croak. When she decided to record her cover album, she chose arrangements that feature the upbeat sound of contemporary music and invited Cohen to sing on "Joan of Arc", which they recorded in March 1986 at The Complex in Los Angeles. To assist Warnes in producing the album, Cohen moved back to Los Angeles for four months and reworked several songs. He also aided in the making of the video for "First We Take Manhattan..."

WELL WORTH A LISTEN! ;)
Howie 11-14-2005, 08:07 PM Thanks for that SM. I remember her duet with Joe Cocker but I've never heard the Leonard Cohen cover album. I've just looked on Amazon and see it can be purchased for £6.97 - one more on the Xmas list I think. :slywink:
lindylou 12-02-2005, 08:22 PM So difficult to choose from all the brilliant Brit singers and groups over the decades.
It would be impossible for me to choose a Beatles song as I love so many of them. There are, of course, the all time faves like 'In My life', 'Hey Jude', George's 'My Sweet Lord', John's 'Imagine',
... and how difficult to choose from great songs by Dusty Springfield with her soulful voice, loads of great songs by Brit groups like The Bee Gees, Queen, The Christians, and so on ..
anyway, after musing awhile I picked these 5 which I do love ;
(in no particular order)
Out Of Time - Chris Farlow.
Honky Tonk Woman - The Stones.
Lola - The Kinks.
All Right Now - Free.
Let's Stick Together - Bryan Ferry. (guaranteed to get you dancing around the kitchen !!) :)
Gerry Marsden's 'You'll Never Walk Alone' is a classic which I love, but I won't choose it for my list as it's more often associated as a footy anthem.
