THE weather could not have been more British, but organisers of an annual festival still managed to re-create Africa in Sefton Park yesterday.

Musicians joined together to entertain the crowds in the 13th annual Africa Oye festival.

This year the festival was filmed to be screened to millions in the United States on the Africa Channel.

Performing in the park were artists from Africa, South America and Jamaica.

They included Brazilian four-piece Cabruera, who played a fusion of modern and traditional styles.

Eyuphuro, from Mozambique, showcased their acclaimed female singer Zena Baker, while Nuru Kane produced sand music from Medina in Senegal.

Act Bonga fled his native Angola for Paris, where he became famous for his music's rhythms and distinctive vocals.

Topping yesterday's bill was Jamaican dance hall king Luciana, backed by the Jah Messenger Band with special guests Dean Fraser and Andrew Tosh.

Performances finished at 8pm on both days. The festival was partly sponsored by the city council, the Culture Company and Liverpool Community College, which hosted workshops with musicians from the festival.

As well as the music, Sefton Park was filled with stalls selling food and other items from around the world in an international village.

Hair demonstrations and face painting were also available throughout the weekend.

And on Friday evening, artists joined with DJs for a night at the Magnet on Hardman Street. Organiser Paul Duhaney said despite the rain the festival had been a huge success.

"It's different from last year because last year we had torrential rain," he said. "We have managed to keep a good crowd here, and we haven't had to stop at all.

"The amount of people on Saturday was the most we've ever had, and we've had musicians and traders from all over the world. It really is the world in one city.

"Luciano were absolutely fantastic, and Omar Pene from Senegal is going to be the next big artist."

Vivienne Leach from Allerton had set up deckchairs and a tent

with her family and friends to watch the festival.

She said: "It's an excellent day; the publicity has been better this year. We're all really enjoying it."

This year, people can listen online to tracks from the artists, through special station Good Radio at www.africaoye.com (http://www.africaoye.com)

A thumbs up from me! :PDT_Piratz_26:

Really good - went late on Sunday afternoon. Just a shame about the weather. Would have been terrific if we could have just got a pinic blanket out, had the papers and chilled to some music.
