I never thought that this day would ever arrive,I gave it an infrequent moment now and then but quickly moved on to more interesting thoughts. Me, a Pensioner!!!
Those are bent backed old people with walking sticks!! Well I've just joined the club. I've got the stick, but no bent back, I'm bald and silver bearded.........BUT I'M NOT OLD!!!!!!
I'm only 67 and I feel free for the first time in my life!! It is 35 minutes past midnight and I don't feel tired. I'm not a layabed, but I don't have to get up at the crack of dawn anymore,I don't have to wear a suit, jeans and a sweatshirt are fine. I am now free of that daily grind that so restricted my time at the p.c.. Retirement is the liberation that my wife and I looking to enjoy to the full. See you next Wed ,
Cheers,
BrianD

Still getting to grips with this retirement malarkey, I still wake up at around 5.30 a.m. I've down sized on the car,no plush interior and real leather seats ; got to get used to a pension,no bonuses or expense account. So this is real life after all? Well, I've still got my p.c., got a store of memories and some time on my hands. If I am to evade gardening and decorating chores I'd better get writing. How are you other retirees coping? Any tips for a newbie?
I await your replies with bated breath,
BrianD

We haven't got a quiz page so I'll stick this here:-
Questions are, who is the statue of, where is the statue and why is it there instead of where it should have been,no prizes for the winner,

Easily remedied.

Go to the Bingo and keep shouting 'House' when you haven't got it. You'll soon be barred - end of problem.

Go to bowling matches and walk on the green to shake the hands of the players before they start - wearing stilettos. You'll soon be barred - end of another problem.

Next!

Captain of the Titanic, went down with his ship!

Nonsense, he lived on the iceberg till 1933 and couldn't grow any more food. He died the next year.

Was it because of where he was born in Hanley, refused the sculpture, and
Lichfield accepted it?

The statue should have been in the Mid Atlantic instead of in the Mid Lands.

If you don't have your own stilettos, borrow Kong's.

So come on Brian, what is the story?

brian daley
08-05-2009, 12:41 PM
Stoke Council would not allow the statue to be erected within the city because they thought that the Captain had been party to a shameful act. Lichfield, beiing a Staffordhire town ,offered the statue a home in its' newly opened Beacon Gardens. And there Captain Smith still stands. However ,when Stoke saw the popularity ratings for the James Cameron film Titanic, they thought they would cash in on it and asked Lichfield for the statue. Lichfield council gave them the sailors farewell. ( That story was told to me by Dave the bin man who works in Lichfield )

I think the Captain did as he was told by the Owner, Bruce Ismay,

"If you dont speed up and get to New York ahead of time then we will get a Captain who can".

HAD IT BEFORE AT SEA.

"If Safety costs money then forget it."

Still goes on, not much change there. Thanks for that Captain.

Safety is now part of ISM (International Safety Management) and if a shipping company is not signatory to the convention they will have trouble finding work; if signatory to the convention a shipping company must comply with all safety requirements regardless of cost.
Safety at sea is now paramount.

Tony,

SAFETY,
Report by EMSA, European Maritime Safety Agency, July 2009.
Quote..........
"According to the Agency`s annual review of maritime accidents, loss of life and accidents involving ships operating in and around EU waters remain significently higher than three to five years ago.
EMSA said a total of 82 seafarers lost their lives last year- the same figure as 2006.
A total of 754 vessels were involved in 670 accidents, sinkings, collisions, groundings, fires/explosions and other significent accidents in and around European waters during 2008. This compares with 762 vessels involved in 715 accidents in 2007 and 535 vessels involved in 505 accidents in 2006.

"This years review again shows that accidents in European waters leads to enormous costs and significent loss of life." said EMSA Executive Director William de Ruiter." ....unquote.
source, Telegraph, Nautilus International.

These incidents, which are still increasing, are only in European waters, mulltiplied by accidents world wide the "safety requirements" by ISM doesnt seem to excist.
The whole seafaring industry is still way behind the requirements.

That's probably why the shipping companies go under foreign flags and have foreign crews. I'll bet they all talk the talk, but when it comes to putting their hands in their pockets.

It is like a battlefield out there. I had several near misses in the North Sea with all the worlds cowboys operating there. I have reported them several times to the Coast Guard but nothing happened.
Safety Regs, Rules of the Road, Traffic Seperation schemes do not excist to many operators. They do just what they want to do, cut corners on safety to save time and money.

I work in the petro-chemical business, probably the richest industry. They say all the right things. If you looked at that business you'd be horrified.
