Here's another one from Sefton Park.

DRINKING fountains were built in the 1850s to stop dockers from spending too much time in the pub.

And now more than 250 schoolchildren are helping to give the Victorian Melly fountains a new lease of life.

Primary schools in south Liverpool have got involved in the plans to restore the first fountain, in Woolton Road.

Terry Chapman, of United Utilities, said: "We wanted to leave a lasting legacy to the city after 2008, and this seemed like an ideal opportunity.

When these fountains were first introduced in the 1850s, it was a tremendous breakthrough in public health, and these are beautiful civic monuments in their own right which deserve to be restored."

Plans started 18 months ago, when Liverpool City Council and the Friends of Liverpool Monuments decided which fountains to restore.

Many had been lying uncared for and vandalised for decades, and organisers decided the local community would be the key to any restoration plans.

Dilys Horwich, Liverpool Culture Company learning and outreach officer, said: "We knew this would be more than just a restoration project, and that it would be important for local people to feel a sense of ownership of the fountains."

Drinking fountains were first introduced in Liverpool in 1854 by Tuebrook man Charles Pierre Melly, an ancestor of famed jazz musician George Melly.

He had seen public drinking fountains in Geneva and seen their health benefits.

He described the problems in Liverpool where dockers could only get a drink in the local pubs "where they were expected to pay for a stronger and less refreshing drink than they required".

Melly noted some were in such distress, they were glad enough to drink at the horse trough.

He initially invested £500 of his own money and installed 43 drinking fountains around the area between 1854 and 1858.

Mr Chapman has designed prototypes for some new drinking fountains, which were used in pupils' science lessons.

Meanwhile, music teacher Gerry Harrison helped children create their own music using water.

Hi Kev

Glad to see these

photographs. Well done. Sorry to see the statues so bashed up though, arms missing and other damage. I remember them from when I attended nearby Quarry

Bank High School 1965-1967.

Wouldn't it be a good idea if Liverpool had a statue of Eros in Sefton Park?
Just like the one in Piccadilly Circus, or even like the one in the Conservation Centre, here in Liverpool.

Is that Peter Pan statue now in the palm house area?

Peter Pan was put inside the Palm House grounds a few months ago.
The Eros in the Conservation Centre IS the one from Sefton Park and it's a disgrace that it's never going back. It does look nice and clean in the 'Eros Cafe', but I'd hardly say it is on public display...another case of Town pinching other areas artworks.

Behave yourself Kev, make it into a borin cylinder?? it's a great shape- it says 'Liverpool.' I wouldn't mind another one, just loads taller.

Iconic, to me anyway, is the fountain at the back of office buildings of The Goree. The 60's one where the buckets fill up and hiss and tip over. I think it's a wonderful piece, and again IS Liverpool.

I agree.
I love that fountain, but for years it wasn't working.
However, Beetham converted the office block into apartments called Beetham Plaza (2000) and got it working again.

It really is a great..."thing." A wonderful object. Always utterly fascinated me as a kid. It always seemed to have it's own personality, almost alive spooky and wierd and great.

I was always transfixed by the door to the 'office' in the right hand pillar. My ambition in life was to live in it.

Went to visit it about a year ago. Have they messed around with the pressures? Wasn't making the clanging racket I remember it making.

I remember that water feature could sit there as a kid amazed, it was always very quiet there as well

..actually the one aspect of it that isn't so great is the paltry amount of muddy looking water which sometimes gets allowed into the basin part. That bit only looks great when it's got a good quantity foamin down there.

That 'bucket fountain' has a small 'hidden' piece of artwork done by Cammell Lairds. I transcribed the writing on it about 2 years ago...took me ages as it was covered in stickers at the time. I'll dig out a pic/transcription (mentions Goree and some American author I just can't remember at the moment, who had offices nearby)
I might be wrong but weren't the walls of this fountain covered in tiny square tiles when it was first installed. The walls seem too smooth nowadays.
I can remember it used to make a clunking sound, but that was years ago when it was probably new.

Was it built by Lairds? The idea of a hidden inscription's exciting.

Aye it was tiled in 'futuristic' light grey. Which was appropriate as it's a retro-futurustic homage of the Thunderbirds era. Doesn't really look true painted in what is it.. 'homely' burnt ochre or something?

The sound was unmistakable. This ever rising frequency of HISSS!! and BUBBLE from the pipes as each particular bucket filled up, then this CRASH! as 60 gallons of water cascades into the tarmac (?yeah, I know)clad pool below.
Wanton noise-insania.

Remember the thrill of arching over to peer into the filling vessels from either of the towers?

'Fountains Of Liverpool' should be the grand title of my first book. Dead easy, we only have about 2!! (Drinking fountains on the Dock Rd and the odd one in a park doesn't count). . .

Best Fountains In Liverpool
1. The 60's bucket one at the back of The Goree offices. This is a great thing. A work of conceptual art in itself. Wierd noises then cascades of water. I was told each stem of buckets represented one of the Beatles -great imagery- except there are 5 of em...
2. The Walker Fountain. It's ok. Classical, bit boring to be honest but nice enough.
.......and that's the Top 2 out of 2!

There are still some original tiles between the spears, and possibly on the inside of the large 'basin'. The newer colours just don't seem right to me.
Here's a transcript of what is written on the shield...I doubt many people have seen it before:

"GOREE-PIAZZA," ORIGINALLY TWO ARCADED
WAREHOUSES IN THE MIDDLE OF THE OLD
DOCK ROAD, WAS NAMED AFTER THE ISLAND
"GOREE," OFF THE WEST COAST OF AFRICA

ON THE 14TH OF SEPTEMBER 1802 THE
PIAZZA WAS GUTTED BY A SPECTACULAR
FIRE, DESCRIBED BY THOMAS DE QUINCEY

IN 1817, WASHINGTON IRVING WORKED AT
NO.1 AND 1853-7, NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE
AMERICAN CONSUL IN LIVERPOOL HAD HIS
OFFICE AT "WASHINGTON-HOUSE, GOREE"

THE OLD PIAZZA WAS SEVERELY BOMBED
IN THE AIR RAIDS OF 1941 AND FINALLY
DEMOLISHED BETWEEN 1948 AND 1950

IN 1967, TO MARK THE COMPLETION OF THE
NEW PIAZZA, THIS PLAQUE WAS KINDLY
PRESENTED BY CAMMELL LAIRD & COMPANY
(S & E) LIMITED, BUILDERS OF THE FOUNTAIN

Washington Irving, the author mentioned on the shield wrote:
'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow' (Headless Horseman story) and 'Rip Van Winkle'

I remember sitting by this fountain in the 70s having me dinner in the summer..we young office girls used to put our tootsies in the water. One day somebody had thrown a whole packet of soap powder in and the bubbles were all over the place - wild times the 70s!

Great to see so much interest in statues at The Palm House.
It's a great afternoon's entertainment, just walking around them and reading the history of each one and how they connect with Liverpool.

Ben Murphy, son of sculptor Tom Murphy and a fine artist in his own right has recently restored these statues to their former glory.
He studied conservation at the prestigious West Dean College, Chichester where he was a Queen Elizabeth Scholar.

SuperLambBanana has to be one of the most talked about pieces of art in the city in recent years. At its introduction back in 1998, the statue was a major cause of controversy, but through time it seems that people have developed affection for the Lambo.

Of course, the statue was outside Lamb's Chandlers at Wapping for a while - until the building was demolished.

I absolutely love the statue and recently purchased a replica from the '08 Place'.

The bell that is in St Nick's Churchyard has a slot in the top. This was for the bell restoration fund from years ago. However the bell is welded to what it sits on so there's no way you'd be able to stick it in ya pocket :)

I know ScouserDave has received this too. Pat has given me permission to post it up, hopefully there could be a monument erected to Melly somewhere within the new buildings going up or in the public green space.

Link to an article about Charles Pierre Melly and his Liverpool drinking fountains:

http://www.liverpoolmonuments.co.uk/drinking/mellycharles02.html

For pictures of his Liverpool drinking fountains, see:

http://www.liverpoolmonuments.co.uk/drinking/melly.html

The Friends of Liverpool Monuments have been working with Liverpool City Council, the Culture Company & United Utilities on a project to re-introduce drinking fountain back onto the streets of Liverpool. The first to be connected to the the water supply is in Woolton Road, see:

http://www.liverpoolmonuments.co.uk/drinking/woolrddkfn01.html

Th 'Friends' have spent 14 hours cleaning this fountain. Liverpool City Council have reconnected the drainage, United Utilities have installed a control box and will be connected the water supply soon. On the Thursday 22nd March (09:30-11:00) the fountain is due to be unveiled.

We at the 'Friends' would like to see new drinking fountains introduced in the public areas of new buildings in Liverpool city centre.

Cheers,

Pat

Thanks, Dave and Phredd. They've done a fine restoration job, haven't they? I assume that the restored drinking fountain is not functional. Is that right? Also is what remains of the old tap to the right of the fountain? Do you think the lion's head was completely replaced or just somehow mended and coated with preservative?

One other comment. They made an interesting decision to fill in the date. I assume it might have been done because they thought that, if the incised lettering remained as it was, a vandal might chip away at it but that they might be less inclined to do so if the numbers were filled in.

THREE teenagers found themselves in a spot of bother after trying to scale one of Liverpool’s most recognisable landmarks.

The youngsters clambered onto the famous Superlambanana - currently stationed outside the JMU building on Tithebarn Street - but once up there could not get back down.

Their friends were unable to help, and the trio were eventually forced to call the Fire Service. continues (http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/liverpoolecho/news/breakingnews/tm_headline=superlambanana-rescue%26method=full%26objectid=18814095%26siteid= 50061-name_page.html)....

Statues in and around the Palm House, Sefton Park:

Other Sefton Park pics here (http://www.yoliverpool.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1193&page=7).

Hi Kev

A lot of people may not know that the same statue of Peter Pan can be seen in Kensington Gardens, London (http://golondon.about.com/od/londonforfree/ss/Peter_Pan.htm). Apparently, the author of Peter Pan, J. M. Barrie (http://www.royalparks.org.uk/parks/kensington_gardens/peter_pan_statue.cfm), was not happy with the statue, believing it did not fully capture Peter's mischievousness. The sculptor, Sir George Frampton, had not modelled Peter Pan on Michael Llewellyn Davies as Barrie had intended. Instead, he used another boy, possibly James W. Shaw or William A. Harwood. Still, the statue, both the Liverpool version and the one in London, continues to delight children of all ages. :handclap:

I personally think that some sort of monument or statue should be created to commemorate our Capital of Culture year. It would be great to see some sort of public consultation on what should be created to involve the people of Liverpool. It would give us all something to be proud of and something for us and future generations to remember 2008 by.

A campaign has been launched to replace a historic sculpture at Liverpool's St George's Hall that would complete the grade II listed building's restoration. The hall has been restored for the opening ceremony of the city's year as Capital of Culture.

But the original marble sculpture had decayed and has not been in place for 50 years.

The original design celebrated Liverpool's enterprise, craft and skills as major city in the world.

Now £3m is needed for a new sculpture with an updated design in place.

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/shared/img/o.gif
I would like to say that this a gift from the people to the city Terry McGunigle, project leader

The finished sculpture will weigh 90 tonnes (90,000 kg) and will have been carved from a 100 tonne (100,000 kg) block of marble.

It will take 18 months to carve and will consist of five pieces which slot together.

The new design will be comprised of figures reprsenting society, history, time and commerce and Europe to symbolize Liverpool's past and present.

Terry McGunigle, who is leadiong the campaign, said: "What we want now is not to replace it, but to do a new version because we are a new generation and a new people.

"It has provisionally been backed by the city council and we have been working with English Heritage.

"We can get the money from corporate sponsorship but I would really like the people to take ownership of it and donate money.

"I don't want it to be just another council led initiative. I would like to say that this a gift from the people to the city."

Thanks for that Ged, my 10 year old grandson is doing an essay of his own choosing, ie, Florenc Nightingale & i took him down to see her monument ,he asked when it had been erected ,hence my enquirey, as it is very hard to park in that area i took a quick photo of him standing by it & we left without reading what was written on the sides, nelsbels

Not sure how true it is but I heard on the Roger Phillips phone-in last year that it had been vandalised by members of the black community who said that Mary Seacole should be honoured in the same way if not even more. That may need clarifying.

She was a black woman who did much the same as Florence N in the Crimea. She's commemorated by a street name off Lodge Lane.

Perhaps.
But they didn't come much bigger than FN.
She was even consulted by major architects on how hospitals were to be built.

P C is a strange thing, sometimes.
The cause isn't advanced by defacing statues.

Yes, she was by Alfred Waterhouse. I have a booklet I must post up on the Royal Infirmary thread though I think Snappel may have already done it actually.

Recent Liverpool Echo photographs are available at Mersey Shop (http://www.merseyshop.com/products/index.php?search_term=Keywords&category_id=133&type_id=5). However, since you say the renaming of the old Wellington Barracks to "Chavasse Barracks" that you attended took place in the Fifties, the Liverpool Record Office might be a better bet. For the latter go to Liverpool Record Office - home page (http://archive.liverpool.gov.uk/).

Good luck, Norm.

This is at the foot of the 16th earl of derby`s tombstone in Liverpool Cathedral. Anybody know the story of the eagle and child, all I know is there are a few pubs by the name in various parts of the country including the Liverpool one which has been demolished.

Can't speak for the rest of the country but the local one usually refers to the symbol of the Earls of Derby, or the Stanleys as they were then. The legend has it, that one Lord Stanley, having no legitimate son with his wife but an illegitimate one with a village girl, decided to take advantage both of his wife's naiveness and the reputation for child stealing which the eagle (sea eagle?) resident in these parts then, enjoyed. He placed his illegitimate off-spring on the ground underneath the nest of an eagle and then invited his wife to stroll in that direction. On finding the child, a thieving eagle was blamed and the child was adopted! Another version of the legend says that the son never inherited as the father had a fit of guilt and left everything to his (legitimate) daughter who adopted the symbol to crow over her half-brother. Various versions exist but that's roughly it.

In Mawdesley out in Lancs, there's an eagle and child pub also named for the Stanleys/Derbys who owned nearby Lathom. The locals call it the bird and the *******!

Whoops! I've been censored! The last word is a common word for an illegitimate child beginning with b.

The clock in Church St on Keys Court and the golden eagle is back on its nest in Paradise St.

Hi G.D,
just wondered if you had any info' on Key's court's previous incarnations, and also,is that it's new name, or a revived old one? I know it was H.M.V.,Woolworth's,previously, but looking at the frontage now, makes me think it was some sort of gallery/arcade, at one time? :)

I thought it was to be called Church alley or yard or something like that .

What is the significance of keys ?

it did have a different name when the project started, I'm trying to find the page online that gave the original names.
as for the keys; at the very top of the building, way above the clock is this...

As for the Keys I have a theory.

The site was that of St. Peters Church (the Liverpool pro-cathedral) and St Peter in traditional Christian symbolgy is indicated by a set of 'crossed keys'. The reason for the Keys is that St Peter traditionaly guards the gates into Heaven and so they keys to the gates became his symbol.

I'm guessing that Keys Court is so named as a reminder of St Peters Church and the keys that St Peter held.

St Peter was also the first pope and as such the emblem of the papacy includes the crossed keys;

ANNAJANE, those photos were really good, thank you for sharing them with us.

I happened to be in the Women's Hospital on Saturday visiting and couldn't wait to ask a friend to take a photo of the statue outside. I think it is very moving as a piece of art especially where it is, gives it a double award from me. See what others make of it.

Did you know it was reported on local radio over the holiday period that this was smashed up and dismantled by the pondlife trying to weigh it in as scrap (apparently) but they gave up on trying to move it as it was too heavy. A local campaigner had applied for railings around the park as youths were using it for drinking and anti social behaviour.

Agreed, thanks, Partsky. Ged, I am sorry to hear about the vandalism and anti-social behavior around the monument. Ugh.

The original of this and its companion, the Architect, are going in the People's City gallery in the new Pier Head museum. They were in the Museum of Liverpool life at Mann Island in the past.

The door on the Nero coffee house in Castle St. This was once a bank building
first as the Adelphi Bank and later the Cooperative Bank

Between those times it was a branch of the Lancashire & Yorkshire Bank, then Bank of Liverpool, then Martins Bank for very many years before closure following the latter's takeover by Barclays and disposal of the site to Co-op.

Great photo of these wonderful doors, thanks Gregs Dad for sharing it.
