How about this one for starters

Letter to Brezhnev (1985) The film is set in Modern day working class Liverpool, where two friends Teresa (the one and only Margi Clarke) and Elaine (Alexandra Pigg) hit the town one night and meet two Russian Sailors. Elaine falls head over heels in love and when the sailors set sail Elaine writes a letter to president Brezhnev of Russia regarding her love and the need to see him again as she believes she is being prevented by the British authorities. It is not however a soppy love story, fast paced and again quite true to working class life in Britain in the 1980's. A Film Four production again, who have made the best low budget British Films of the last twenty years.

I love the film No Surrender, plus Dancing Through The Dark portrays a very depreese Liverpool just before the bubble stops in town were demolished. Our Day Out is up there too.

Bought this DVD for a tenner in HMV this week. Watched first episode yesterday, it's boss. Never seen it before. A few familier faces, such as Con O'Neil (billed as Robert O'Neil in credits) and the guy who used to play Tracey Corkhills fella in Brookie.

I don't know if it is the remastered version, it is a good copy though and plays well.
I didn't notice the missing sequence in dangerous Years, it is 50 years since I saw it on the Majestic and I had even forgotten what it was about. I was a bit disappointed it didn't show as much of the city as Violent Playground did. Also the quality wasn't as good but it was still quite watchable.

Theres a scene in the Movie Shy where theres a fight in a Barracks and someone is Covered in Blood (Think its Frankie Vaughan, not sure though as I have'nt seen it for ages!!)..Next thing He appears and has no blood on him..Check it out..Keep yer eye open for the Fight and someone covered in Blood..Some one in America was telling me theres about 15 minutes missing..I cant verify that though..
.................................................. ............................
These Dangerous Years..1957
Frankie Vaughan was from my neck o' the woods..About 200 yards from where I live..

http://www.answers.com/topic/frankie-vaughan

Frankie Vaughan was 29 when "These dangerous years" was released,a little elderly for a teenage idol, but this was in the days of David Whitfield, Ronnie Hilton,Ruby Murray(yes THAT Ruby Murray - now immortalised in Cockney rhyming slang)Joan Regan and a lot of other perfectly nice but not particularly youthful singers filled the Top Twenty. With the arrival of Cliff and Tommy and Billy and Marty,Mr Vaughan switched smoothly to "all-round entertainer" status and headlined all round the country for years. He looks rather silly in a leather jacket and his mid-Atlantic accent is a leftover from the days when it was considered an essential part of any entertainer's armoury. This mantle would soon be taken over by the scouse accent and is presently being filled by the Geordie accent. There was a good film to be made out of the "pop singer as a conscript" concept, unfortunately for Mr Vaughan it was called "Idol on Parade" and he wasn't in it,his co - star from "These dangerous Years",Mr Anthony Newley was. Mr Newley was the genuine article - a rounded entertainer who could sing, dance, act, write songs and,for all I know, train a pack of performing seals. One of my great theatrical experiences was in 1962 when I saw his London production of "Stop the world,I want to get off".He really was too versatile for his own good,it seemed you never knew which Anthony Newley you were going to get,all his talents were liable to escape at once.He steals this film from Mr Vaughan without breaking into a sweat. "These Dangerous years" is an intriguing record of a time when British Pop was pausing for breath after years of taffeta dresses and white open - necked shirts with cravats before reaching for it's guitar and and crew-neck pullover. Mr Vaughan wasn't what teenagers in 1957 were reaching out for. My father was a great admirer of his, praising his admirable involvement in Boys' Clubs. What neither he nor Mr Vaughan knew was that most boys wouldn't be seen dead in a Boys' Club unless dragged there by a parent. The first Elvis and Gene Vincent records were coming out. After we'd heard "Be - Bop a Lula" we didn't want to play table tennis and drink Tizer. We were no longer happy to have our musical taste imposed on us. When we went out and bought "Heartbreak Hotel" it was our Declaration of Independence, our announcement that we were no longer prepared to be patronised by films like "These Dangerous Years". "Roll over Beethoven" - and farewell Frankie Vaughan.

Always found Newley was like a visitor from another dimension, a bundle of nervous talent who stopped the world . I remember him as the Dodger in that Oliver Twist film with Alec Guiness as Fagin and Robert Newton as Bill Sykes and Newley stole the film especially that scene in Fagins lair towards the end ,when he fronts Bill and Bill bottles it....

I agree with Gumshoe and Breznev- superb stuff both.

But Distant Voices, Still Lives and its follow-up, The Long Day Closes, both by the local-born genius Terence Davies, will always be my fave Liverpool films by a mile.
I remember seeing Distant Voices with a group of similarly-homesick Scousers in London- I'd seen it before and knew what to expect but seeing this bunch of 'hard cases' crying buckets was something to experience!

Can't remember all the cast but Pete Postlethwaite as the loony father was terrifying in the extreme. Lots of faces from Brookie were in it too and the hero's young sister was Suzy Flannagan, the daughter of my pal Tony the artist (one of the Bluecoat railings painters).

You've got me started now- I'll definitely be dragging out my scratchy old video of these tonight! Highly recommended.

BOYS FROM THE BLACKSTUFF

has to be the best television show ever made. Yosser's "Gizza Job" catchphrase and Shake Hands will be remembered for years.

A fantastic series showing the true face of Liverpool during the Thatcher era.

It's a film that is extremely funny in parts, and just as sad in others. This was real life in Liverpool and will serve in time to come as an educational material for anyone wondering what life really was like during the depression-scarred 1980s.

Rubbish Liverpool is better now than 20 years ago

Unemployment is lower (except for those who refuse to work)

The economy is one of the fastest growing in the UK

The city centre has been regenerated.

Yep there is anti social behaviour, (however remember the Toxteth riots I would call that anti social) that comes from those who refuse to take work and live off the Dole and have no ambition or talent and actually like living in ****. Life is better in Liverpool for people like me.

I didn't say it wasn't better, I was just pointing out that you need to remove your rose coloured specs and look at the whole picture.
I'm sure you know all about the riots from reading the propaganda that was written about the, How old were you when they occurred?

Thats absolutely none of your business. The riots simply destroyed the community for the law abidding majority and achieved nothing.

"Yep there is anti social behaviour, (however remember the Toxteth riots I would call that anti social) that comes from those who refuse to take work and live off the Dole and have no ambition or talent and actually like living in ****. Life is better in Liverpool for people like me."

You have come out with some Crap on here Paul but that takes the Rocky Bar..
The Toxteth Riots were down to Police brutality toward Black people who finally said Enough is Enough.
And if thats your Idea of a Smart arse wind you wanna get your head looked at mate..

Bollocks Gerard the riots achieved nothing and the improvements would have happened anyway. I might have grievances but I don't go out and burn down the local school, shop or church. And personally Gerard i think you come out with scally crap mate

I remember Boys from The Blackstuff coming out on TV, it was a powerful series with some fantastic characters, Yosser, Snowy, Shakehands.
I actually bought the series on DVD not too long ago, amazing looking at the city and how it changed.

Boys From The Blackstuff defined a period in my life. My dad absolutely loved it and still greets me with the phrase 'Shake 'ands'!

Suburban.
OK, you don't want to say how old you are.
But you obviously know about the riots from "History" lessons.
Despite what you've heard, no schools or churches were burned down.
And, yes, I was around at the time.

Does anyone know which school was used in 'Our day out' ?

it would appear the coach makes a journey from the South end towards the tunnel, yet somehow finds itself coming back down Byrom Street from the North whereby you would naturally enter the tunnel from the South via Victoria Street - I notice these liclke things you see.

no mention of Blood on the Dole in this thread.

written by Jim Morrison (no, not that one)
and was on the telly as an 'Alan Bleasdale presents' on ch4 in 95.

About two wirral lads and what they did when they left school.
One of me fave films ever.

Also, no mention of McGoverns "Needle", an absolute
belter of a film about Heroin.
