TALL ships crews from North and South America want to sign up for the 2008 Culture year race hosted by Liverpool.
Culture officials have been contacted by teams keen to take part in the event, which is normally the domain of European crews.
The start of the race, spanning four days, is expected to attract a million visitors to Liverpool's famous waterfront in July 2008, with a further million watching the Parade of Sail and is a major event for the Capital of Culture celebrations.
More than 100 ships will be in the Mersey for the big event, along with more than 3,000 crew members.
A Culture Company spokesman said: "We are on course for the strongest Tall Ships race yet."
It comes as LCC prepares to announce three new official suppliers in the next few weeks and its programme events for the city's 800th birthday celebrations next year.
And yesterday the city council announced a £1.4m project to turn Otterspool park and promenade (http://www.yoliverpool.com/forum/showthread.php?p=10961&posted=1#post10961)into a major open air performance venue for 2008.
