Lookwhat arrived in the mail today! I'm very happy to finally have a copy of this book by Quentin Hughes. I think the photos are fantastic, lots of grainy black and white with really interesting shadows.
(The photos in Seaport are by Graham Smith and David Wrightson, copyright 1964 Percy Lund, Humphries & Co. Ltd.)
'Seaport'-that's a great book. I have a first edition hardback from 1964. It was later reissued as a paperback with an 'update' section in the back. Had that too but made the mistake of lending it to someone and never saw it again. Never again.
That beatiful photograph of the young girl, "Short-lived beauty which blossoms in a desert" was used as an album cover by Mr Amir, an enigmatic musician who lived in the Granby Street area. One of my favourite albums still.
Other books on the Liverpool shelf:
• Landmarks in Liverpool History: W Tyndale Harries MA (Senior History Master at Quarry Bank) 1946
• The Place Names of the Liverpool District: Henry Harrison 1955
• Liverpool under James I and Liverpool under Charles I: Liverpool City Council 1960. These great hardbacks were being sold off in the library for just a couple of quid each a few years ago.
• Liverpool Ways and Byways: Michael O'Mahony 1930- one of my favourites which I'd love to see re-issued.
• The Liverpool Guide: anonymous 1796
• An Essay Towards the History of Leverpool: William Enfield 1774
• Herman Melville: Redburn, His First Voyage 1849- Fab! I re-read this regularly. Read it for free here- http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/8118
• The Slave Trade: Hugh Thomas 1997. Lots of detail about Liverpool's involvement.
• The Dock Road: A seafaring tale of old Liverpool: J Francis Hall 1939 (reissued 1992)
• History of the Commerce and Town of Liverpool (2 volumes): Thomas Baines 1852
• Liverpolitana: Peter Howell Williams 1971
• Viking Mersey: Stephen Harding 2002
• The Whitbread Book of Scouseology: Phil Young and Jim Bellew. Undated but mid 80s I think.
Etc etc..
I also have an extensive collection of Chester books (always on the lookout for more, if anyone can help!) Liverpool comes up a lot in these too.
