Many people around the world are beginning to look forward to a summer of football, when top international teams will compete for the World Cup.

Before this though, another exciting football event will take place in the UK that will touch the lives of children around the world in a very different way.

Soccer Aid, brainchild of UNICEF UK Ambassador Robbie Williams, will hit TV screens in the UK at the end of May this year. As well as providing a week of fun entertainment on ITV, Soccer Aid will raise funds for the work of UNICEF and its partners, providing textbooks, medicines, clean water, and mosquito nets, as well as care and protection, for thousands of children in some of the world’s poorest countries.

Soccer Aid will be broadcast daily for a week on ITV1 and ITV2, from 22–27 May. You will be able to enjoy watching World Cup football legends and major celebrities training, competing for a place in one of two teams, and then finally battling it out on the pitch for the Soccer Aid title at Old Trafford. A half-hour show of each day’s trials and tribulations, hosted by Ant and Dec, will be broadcast on ITV every night for a week in the run up to the Soccer Aid final at Old Trafford.

Soccer Aid is bringing together World Cup football legends and major celebrities for one week of football at the end of May. Broadcast on ITV1 and ITV2, the legends and celebrities will train, play and compete for places in two final teams: “England” and “The Rest of the World”. The teams will then battle it out for the Soccer Aid title in a Grand Final at Old Trafford on May 27 – and of course raise money for UNICEF’s work in the process. Tickets can be purchased online for three Soccer Aid matches, including the final.

UNICEF UK Ambassador – and the catalyst for Soccer Aid – Robbie Williams will lead “England” as their captain, whilst chef Gordon Ramsay will captain “The Rest of the World”. Former England manager Terry Venables has agreed to manage the home side while football legend Ruud Gullit will manage “The Rest of the World”. Gianfranco Zola and Marcel Desailly have also joined the line-up for the star-packed show, which will be presented by Ant and Dec.

As requested by Robbie Williams, Soccer Aid will raise funds for the work carried out by UNICEF and its partners protecting children worldwide.

Launching Soccer Aid Robbie Williams said, “I have been an Ambassador for UNICEF since 2000 and some of the best moments of my life have been spent with children in Mozambique, Sri Lanka and South Africa. During my last UNICEF trip, I met so many kids who gave me reason to smile. Now, through UNICEF, its partners and Soccer Aid, I want to be able to give them something to smile about too.”

The big match – to be played on the famous turf of Old Trafford in front of an expected capacity crowd on Saturday 27 May and broadcast live on ITV – will see the culmination of all this hard work. It will also mark the highpoint of a groundbreaking fundraising event for the world’s children.
