Blind Scouse & Spotty Dog

“What’s this?” I ask my mam
Head down in to shoulders
In case she should swing for me
As she often said she would
“You’ll like it, it’s scouse”
“Where’s the meat?”
“Can’t you see it’s blind scouse?
Speciality of our poor house.”

Head still bowed I break through
The oily surface tension
With some organic crusty bread
That once was white and doughy.

Blind scouse has no meat
Our dog Spotty has no spots
But I brace myself and eat
Knowing it will not age well
And three days left to Friday.

I sneak a bit to Spotty
He sniffs and licks it only once
Not a fan of haute cuisine, he leaves
To rummage in someone else’s bin
I watch his goosestep march
Toward the open door
Burnt one week before.

Full of bonhomie, my luncheon ate
I cheerfully ask, “What’s for pudding?”
Head not down far enough
Mam smacks me for my cheek.

Blind scouse has no meat
Our dog Spotty has no spots
Mam’s tears stain her cheek
Perhaps she’s hurt her hand
On my thick head.

A BID to protect scouse under European food brand laws has been launched.

The move would mean that the traditional meat and vegetable stew - and scouse pies sold at Anfield - could only be marketed in a ready-made form if manufactured on Merseyside.

It would give scouse the same protected status as Beacon Fell Lancashire cheese, Newcastle brown ale and Cornish clotted cream.

Regional Euro-MP Arlene McCarthy has formally appealed the the EC to include such north west fare as Cumberland sausage, Morecambe Bay potted shrimp and Eccles cakes.

But Merseyside MPs want scouse to be added to the list.

Bootle's Joe Benton said: "Scouse should be given the same protection from bogus products purporting to be the real thing.

"It is traditional Liverpool fare, it is delicious and people should not be conned by bogus products."

Riverside's Louise Ellman said: "Europe-wide protection for Scouse would fit neatly with the city's status as 2008 European capital of culture."

Under European law Britain currently has 36 products protected by "geographical indicators" identifying a food product as original only if it is made and branded in its home area.

Merseyside currently has none and the north west as a whole has only Beacon Fell cheese.

Ms McCarthy has appealed to farmers markets in Liverpool, St Helens, Ellesmere Port, Southport, Cheshire and Lancashire to nominate worthy products.

She said: "British food is having a renaissance on menus across Europe.

"With the lifting of the beef ban and the craze in trendy restaurants for British staples like bread and butter pudding, north west producers need to seize the day and put their produce on the map.

"Regional food gives farmers the chance to diversify into value-added products which provide a relaible source of income and cut out the middlemen who cream off the profits.

"European protection will cut back competition from imposters."

The Department of Environment, Food and Rural affairs said that ministers will support regional applications for European food brand protection.

An aide said: "Although I was raised in the south, I remember the scouse my Liverpool granny used to make."

FA Cup super-scouse at £25 a plate

LIVERPOOL'S bid to win the FA Cup has inspired a chef to create a culinary tribute that has turned out to be the most expensive plate of scouse ever seen.

Such a dish would normally never feature on the menu at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in the city.

But tomorrow's final prompted the hotel's head chef Brian Gamble to create luxury scouse with a Spanish twist.

And despite its £25-a-head price tag the dish he calls "Rafa-lution Scouse" has scored an instant success with diners at the four-star hotel.

Mr Gamble, 39, said: "We decided to create a really luxurious version of the traditional Scouse, with an added kick of a Spanish influence.

"It's a type of scouse that has never been seen before using finest fillet of lamb and chorizo sausage, with baby carrots, turnips and shallots and saffron potatoes."
