Hey... a post form a subject of my hometown! :D
Didnt live too far away from Fred, and the ex lived a short distance away. Lovely part of town he lived in off Radcliffe Road.... nearby are the parts of town thta the ending scenes from 'Spring & Port Wine' was filmed.
He was much loved in Bolton (in pretty much the way Gerry Marsden is here). He wasn't pretentious, and there was many a character like him all over the town. And he was proud of who he was.
Unfortunately people there now seem to dislike that 'character' for being too northern, or worse still, working class.... The place is a shadow of what it used to be, and even now when i travel back, its a very disinteresing, disenchanted and strangled place.
Even so, even now, pepe are still glad that someone like Fred was famous, for simply beng a 'working class northerner'.
Its brilliant to see someone recognises that, and wants to keep the spirit alive.

I knew Fred and my late father in law lived at that house many many years ago before WW2.when it was a rented Police House.
Fred was in the same class as my ex wife, at St. Michaels CE School.
In the 60s all our friends including Fred and his first wife Alison and us always had lots of parties, long before Fred became famous.
Last time I saw him, his famous Defender Land Rover was broken down coming off St Peters Way, not far from where he lived, I stopped and asked him if he needed help, " Nay,its awreet lad, Jacks coming" at that moment his mate turned up to tow him away.I didnt see him again.
His funeral was the best that Bolton has ever had, His son drove the steam engine with Fred`s coffin, there was a big procession through the town centre with thousands lining the streets in the pouring rain, to the Parish Church on Church Gate. The Mayor and everyone was there then they took him up Bury Road to the cemetery and laid him to rest.
A large statue of him has been ercted in the Town Centre, sadly it looks nowt like him.
When he became famous, people would stop by his windows and look in, not a lot of privacy.

Well done you Cadfael. Fred certainly deserves the title, 'National Treasure".
BTW
What else but the statue of a well respected figure merits the attentions of boys being boys?

Great stuff Cadfael. Well done!!!
Fred would be proud that his life's work has been respected. He was a national treasure, and uniquely himself, at all times.
I used to love seeing him ply his trade on those early tv documentaries - stacking car tyres, and playing a massive game of Jenga with those railway sleepers, setting them on fire, and waiting around [full of chat] ready for the stack to collapse.
He belonged to an age before H&S wrapped the world in cotton wool.
A fine tribute!
