View Full Version : Misc. Urban Exploration
Urban exploration is the examination of the normally unseen parts of the urban environment. Liverpool has some wonderful and interesting areas that the majority of us will never see due to their locations and condition. Abandoned structures, grave yards, churches, warehouses, tunnels of various types, underground sites, caves, buildings in use. The list goes on.....
*The Festival Garden Site is one area that springs to mind.
*The Williamson Tunnels is another interesting location.
If you have managed to take pictures of some of these areas post 'em here.

On top of the new carpark in town, very nice pic:
This shot was taken on top of a new car park in Liverpool. There were no signs to say it was private. No signs to say that photography was prohibited. I checked. Yet when I was up there a guard came running up and escorted me out saying it was owned by the Police and that due to this whole Anti-Terrorism thing I couldn't take photos. I explained that I wouldn't have if they had a warning informing me of this. It just looked like any other car park. There was no-one guarding the entrance or anything. I just walked in. Still got the shots and left :)

This place is in Otterpool park and I'm not exactly sure what it was originally?
There are all kinds of hidden gems around there - used to play there as a kid. Thanks Paul. This thread gives you inspiration to get out and explore!
lindylou 05-22-2006, 03:31 PM Thanks for that picture Paul :) it takes me right back ! When I was a kid and we would go to Otterspool on Sunday afternoons we would always look at that 'secret cave' and wonder what it was and where did it lead to ??
I did hear what it was for - but I've forgotten !
Other childhood memories of Otterspool are; the huge Rhododendron bushes with the lovely big flowers - bright pink, purple and white ones.
The frog pond covered with bright green algae - if you were lucky you might catch sight of a frog. I think the frog pond was somewhere near that 'secret cave' ! I wonder if the pond is still there ?? Probably dried up or filled in now. It's a long time since I've been there.
That main path that leads in from Aigburth rd side, one side has a wall that seperates the park from the main road, and it gets quite steep as you walk further into the park - do you know where I mean ? There is a deep kind of dell, and my dad used to tell us that wolves were kept down there in the old days !! Ha,ha.
What, with tales of wolves and secret caves, we were in awe of the place ! There was always a certain kind of atmosphere there.
Remember the big cafe/sweet shop were you could get snacks, drinks and ice cream. There were tables & chairs outside and there would always be pesky wasps around the bins !
You've brought back memories of the place Paul ! :)
It's made me think .. I should get down there myself with the camera.
Will do in the better weather.
My memories? Climbing to the top of the hill where the compass/sun dial is. Ice creams from the old shop. The 'Why Don't U?' building hidden away, the old train station, rope swings from branches that where rediculously high up (how anyone ever climbed up to tie a rope on, I'll never know), someone trying to knick my bike off me and I said 'no' and the went away, i must have scared them off. The swamp as we called it was always a challange to cross, navigating the planks of wood etc, and that tunnel - great times there :celb (23):

Here's a couple more of Otterpool park,it has a very strange feel to it,sometimes you feel like your miles away from anywhere and the you catch site of the busy Aigburth Road,I used to go egging there when I was a kid thankfully kids don't seem to do that anymore.

I don't know the 'Why don't U ?' ... what is it ?
That sun dial .. I remember so well. Used to always climb up to look at it.
Yes, there were always rope swings there in Otterspool - right back to when I was little - which is a long time ago !! :) They would be tied to very high tree branches.
The swamp - that must have been the frog pond ?? Is it still there ?
I remember that sweet kiosk you mention, but the cafe further back was a bigger place, a proper cafe, I think the building was derelict last time I went there. Must be quite a few years since I've been. 7 or 8 maybe.
lindylou 05-22-2006, 04:13 PM More smashing pics from Paul :celb (23):
Hope you don't mind but I've I've saved them - for memories :)
I'll deffo go and have a look around there again soon.
I remember Jericho lane fields - where there are new houses or apartments now. We often sat in the field having our butties and lolly ices.
We would have to walk over the road to the 68 bus terminus to get the bus back to Anfield. It seemed such a long journey to us as kids. The bus took forever to get back.
Why Don't u was a kids tv programme, the presenters were kids/ teens and depending on where abouts in the country they were, they formed 'gangs'. The Liverpool GAng were supposed to be based in that old hut building in the middle of otterspool.

Thanks Kev,it was great looking around the ship,it was great being allowed to walk around Liverpool's dock freely which is something I'll make sure I do again next time another big ship visits. It was the first time I've been the other side of the dock wall and it was a great experience all round.:PDT_Piratz_26:

I once went to the Queens and Kings Docks when they were in full swing with ships and not filled in. Standing on the river side of the docks and looking towards the city was a strange eerie feeling. I could see above the dock sheds the tops of all the buildings I was familiar with since I was born, yet the environment in the docks was superb and totally contrasting to what was on the other side of the Dock wall. I was so near yet so far. I was in a magical place filled with beautiful ships of all colours, great expanses of water with activity all around, yet so near to home, but excluded from this magical place. I can see why the men who worked on the docks and ships found it so compelling.

A reminder of the war in Springwood Avenue.
The Williamsonson Tunnels were amazing. Such a small part of what will soon become a massive labrynth of underground tunnels beneath Liverpool.
We toured the small part of the tunnels that are open to the public. Its amazing to know that the tunnel system goes far beyond what we know at the moment!
Joseph Williamson was a 19th-century philanthropist, tobacco merchant, property owner and pioneer of tunnels. He was born on 10 March 1769, possibly in Warrington. At the age of 11 he moved to Liverpool seeking employment. His mother Sarah permitted him to move from his home to Liverpool on the condition that he was to lodge with his employer. His employer was Richard Tate of the Tate tobacco and snuff manufacturers.

Terry 07-09-2006, 07:32 PM Yes shame the weather wasn't kinder but the company more than made up for it.Btw Kev i missed that model car in the tunnels glad you captured it where on earth was it?.
Well i really left Liverpool knowing more about the place than when i arrived which pleases me.Makes you wonder whether Mr Williamson realised at the time what he & his workers really achieved.I just hope it gets the recognition it deserves as there are a lot of voluntary groups all worthy i'm sure but this is history being uncovered (if you'll excuse the pun). All in all it made for a brilliant day, thanks all.:snf (41):

Williamson achieved employment for people that is all. That aside, he achieved nothing at all as they were useless, pointless tunnels. When they were digging through the Lime St rail cuttings, the navvies could hear noises on the other side of the rock faces, and at one point they broke through and the men were amazed that other men were cutting tunnels near them for no apparent reason.
Cuckoo he was. He could have build a water reservoir or superior sanitation like sewers or something that would have benefited the people at the time.

Wallasey Town Hall towers above the neat (or potentially neat) terraces of Egremont and Seacombe. Wallasey Town Hall has always been in this part of the town and before WW1, the town hall was on Church Street. however, this recived a direct hit from a bomb and was completely destroyed.
http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/1996/20060830somervilleandegremont036ue4.jpg
Why do people have to cover up the possibly most ornate part of the house with grotty pebbledash? Look at the detailing above the door! These houses would look great if they were all in a "uniform" style. May sound a bit boaring but at least the street will look a-lot nicer to live in!
Hope this trip down Memory Lane for some is well appreciated :PDT_Aliboronz_11:

When we was kids.. they had a circus there every summer, big top the werks
wallasey 08-31-2006, 02:42 PM Where's the park? If you mean behind me then I am afraid that it has been built on. There was a pub there but now it has been pulled down and awaits development for something else.
I say waiting; there were a few diggers and a man with his feoddalite on site when I walked past....
I was talking about Central Park .... but I think your thinking of this little park ... http://static.flickr.com/71/228216876_410f307ac4.jpg
And its been/being built on !!? :(
They always say you can't go back, maybe they were right.. :(
wallasey 08-31-2006, 09:39 PM Apologies! It hasn't been built on! But Liscard Hall is derelict!
Apart from that, the park has actually been renovated! The pond has more or less been restored even though some of the local yobs have been known to treat it as a loo in daylight!
Personally, the Breck is marginally nicer. It would be better if Wirral Council would trim the trees down so that we all have a view! Failing that, theres always St Hillaries or Vale Park (the latter is very nice!)
I have some photies here (somwhere) of Central Park in the 70's , theres a mad one without about 50 kids with nets on bamboo trying to catch the Pike let loose on the lake :)..
I'll dig it out at the weekend ;)
Was out and about this morning. I've always been fascinated by the things people dump over the promenade at Otterspool, take a look at what I found.

That library looks good - I remember seeing your photos before of the documents and things. Amazing what gets left behind in some places. Companies fold and go into receivership and all the archives and paperwork gets left.

Why was Corinth Tower demolised?
It looks ok to me from the pictures.
scouserdave 10-11-2006, 11:57 PM It was structurally unsound and would have cost a fortune to upgrade. I tipped off a couple of my mates, George Kountis (Eldon Grove) and Brian
Brennan (Build Direct), but they wouldn't touch it with a bargepole.
So instead you went in to take pics even if you could of fell through a floor?
I would of bought the tower for my

Anyone called Dave would take pictures of it's greatness everyday and sell the pictures to pay for the structure to be upgraded in solid
platinum.

I passed down Sheil Road
the other day and I was really impressed by the quality housing which has replaced those flats. I was past it in a flash but it looks as though some thought
and design has gone into the estate. I'll lay money on the residents being far happier living in a 'real' house than one of those high rise
'apartments'.

Paul D 11-21-2006, 05:06 PM You used to be able to look inside it at one time I don't think there's much too see, mind you it was dark.
christy 01-07-2007, 01:02 PM Havn't been near the airaid shelter by Crocky park Manshion for years but that pic looks like they have dug the entrance out. The earth used to go up much higher and you had to drop down to get into the entrance.
The flats on Sheil road and the likes of Corinth tower and the ones on Cantril farm (Hillsdean, etc) were built by French company Camus who used a pre fab system of concrete sections one on top of the other. This can be seen in the easthetic of the buildings with each pre fab section making up rooms and the sections between calconies. Unfortunately the concrete mix was apparently not of great quality and had led to cracks in the oad bearing structure which although it could have been fixed, would have cost more than any redevelopment would have returned. Shame because I really liked these flats - the scale was monumental, especially the ones on Shiel road which looked megalithic from certain viewpoints like the junction of St Oswald street/edge lane and on Queens drive by Holly lodge/larkhill garage.
Rice lane city farm/Walton cemetary.

taffy 03-02-2007, 04:53 PM This is an interesting building. It seems to have been converted from early 19th C terraced housing. The row was adapted at some point into a clothing factory. Given the long Jewish associations with this area, I suspect this business was Jewish owned.
I took some myself whilst walking around the London Rd Area (http://www.yoliverpool.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2375&page=2).

Putting an "s" on Tesco is OK, but it should be written as Tesco's, meaning "I'm going to Tesco's supermarket."
Hows about sticking 'the' on the fornt of things, ie - going to 'the' adsa etc....

marky 05-15-2007, 12:03 AM Re Carved Insects on Blackburn Assurance Building:
In heraldry the Bee can be used to represent the initial 'B' (in this case 'B' for Blackburn). It appears on Blackburn Borough Councils' coat of arms also. Bees can also represent other things.
Lots of decorations on buildings are connected to the various symbols used in heraldry...Lancashire Roses, Fleurs-de-lys, Lions etc. The important families of the old townships/manors also have their own symbols which you can find around Liverpool.

Almost like the land that time forgot. You turn the corner, and are transported back in time! It's fabulous!

I'm ashamed to say I didn't know it existed until a few months ago!
I love it there.
Will have to get some more pics there soon :)
See them in their prime here if you haven't already:

Some about 10 lines down and some in the middle of the page.
They're undergoing very slow renovation with one block out of the 3 almost ready for occupying.

loads of these around Lark Lane way-an old coal hole in the back yard wall

a bit rarer to see these days...the old wall bins. we had these in Plumer St when I was kid. The bin men would go up and down the entry with 1 large bin and empty these into it. all in the days before bin bags. most people had the walls bricked up liked the coal holes when new refuse services were introduced in the 1970's.
