They are wanting the Burscough rail curve reinstated and put on the Merseyrail metro system. This then will take trains from Ormskirk to Burscough and then to Southport forming a loop.

If this happens will Burscough remain as it is now? Will the shops close down as people go to Liverpool and Southport for their shopping?

I'm surprised you haven't got one of Burscough Priory. It's a little known bit of local history. The ruins (two columns of stone) are in the private property of a house, when I last visited an sweet old lady was living there, she kept geese in a paddock around the ruins and let my brother and I go in and have a look in return for sweeping up the crab apples on her driveway.

I've heard of it but never been, supposedly very, very old. Ormskirk market is over 1000 years old, Orme being a viking and kirk being his church. I work in skem and pick my eldest up from Burscough so this is my route.

Nice pictures Ged!

As you drive over the first bridge in Burscough,theres a nice pub along the canal on the left hand side of the A59, its called the Slipway.

Lovely in the summer, a walk along the canal for about 15 minutes, the pub is on the next bridge along.

Really nice.

These stone collums can be seen from the camp site Abbey Farm. You can almost touch them from the Campsite grouds and they look very old indeed. I dont have a photo unfortunately.

Ged, could you change the resolution of your first pic please? Its 2460x3280 pixels which is huge for the forum. All of the other pics in your message are 800x600 which is perfect.

Yeah, it's very old. From the 1100s I think. The charter for Ormskirk market was granted by te crown to the monks of Burscough Priory. I believe they were Black Canons - i.e. they followed the rule of saint Augustine of Hippo.

Unfortunately the priory was at the sharp end of auld 'enry and his dissolution. The bells from it are in Orksmirk parish church now.

Interestingly - wiki says that Lathom means 'Brick House' (Lothe Hom) so called after the first brick built hall there after the conquest in 1066.
