View Full Version : Legendary Liverpool Clubs Of Yesteryear.
Paul D 05-02-2006, 03:13 PM Right me and Victoria have just went one one for about an hour talking about "The Quadrant Park" so there must be a thread in this subject because everyone has special memories of going clubbing,I suppose a quad thread would isolate most people so if you were a regular at a particular club put some of your memories down here.Whether you were there when "The Bier Keller" was kicking off (like me) and Listening to Groundpig has special memories get involved, were you there in "The State all those years ago? Did you go to "The Cavern" at the time of The Beatles or later on like me in the 80's,were you indeed lucky enough to go to the legendary "Erics"?Put down here the time when you were in your heyday and all those special memories.:celb (23):
15/16 years of age: The Cavern
After that The Buzz Skelorne Street
Then Fallows 2 Speke
The State once
And loads of other places that escape my mind :celb (23):
For a minute I was scratching me head... I thought after seeing the thread title, it was about legendary footie teams :o
Who was at the Joy division gig at Erics ?
victorialush 05-02-2006, 04:14 PM I remember the Buzz in Skelhorn St, what a dive!
051
Secrets in Litherland, grab a granny!
The Firehouse and Flames by the Quad!
Tokyo Joes
Is the Grafton still going?
victorialush 05-02-2006, 04:16 PM Oooooh and Nation @ the Cream.
The She club *sn1ggers*
The Conte
Le Bateaux (is that still goin?)

I used to go "The Cavern" in the late 80's I absolutely lived for the place,I've had many a great night there."Fallows" I think I used to go to the one in Bootle was it? It used to be a rave and was another top venue.I went to "The State" on and off when it used to be for "The Smiths Crowd" and then you guessed it when it was a rave venue, the place was great when it was used for raves.:celb (23):

I used to go to "The She Club" occasionally,I can't think why? Le Bateux's on Duke Street Isn't it? One of my mates is in a band and he played there and the sordid story he told me about there would make you hair curl and isn't for a forum like this, think swingers.

Who was at the Joy division gig at Erics ?
You know what I hate Joy Division but it's not a bad thing to have on your cv is it? I'd would have much preferred to see bands like The Clash,The Jam,The Sex Pistols or even some of the great Liverpool bands that club spawned, but that's just me being anti manc I suppose.

I always thought "The 051" was a bit shady but I went there loads of times.I reckon everyone's been "The Grafton" at some stage and I still see crowds of people pouring out of there at closing times.
Paul D 05-02-2006, 04:49 PM I think The Grafton and The She Club were the only places you could go to and the women would buy your ale.:037:
bobbymac 05-02-2006, 05:22 PM Early 60's Cavern & Kasbah. Green Door. Locano and Grafton, tho. I'd hardly call them 'clubs.' Not then anyway. When I remember more I'll post them.:celb (6):
victorialush 05-02-2006, 05:25 PM Didn't the She club have something to do with ladies of the night? :D
Paul D 05-02-2006, 05:40 PM Didn't the She club have something to do with ladies of the night? :D
Sort of but the didn't charge any money.:)
lindylou 05-03-2006, 04:54 PM I think The Grafton and The She Club were the only places you could go to and the women would buy your ale.:037:
They used to be known as 'Pick up joints' ! :D .. two other places for 'pick ups' where The Montrose and Pickwicks !
I hated them kind of clubs - real naff !
I went to the Cavern early 70s. Also Erics later on - but only when reggae bands were playing ! Wasn't into anything else - only black music.
There were some great live bands and singers on clubs like The Mardi and the Victoriana. (The likes of Ike & Tina Turner, Wilson Picket, Edwin Star, etc)
We used to go to Soul music clubs and Reggae blues dances :) :)
... God, this thread makes me feel old !! ... and I am !! :disgust: :D
Paul D 05-03-2006, 05:17 PM They used to be known as 'Pick up joints' ! .. two other places for 'pick ups' where The Montrose and Pickwicks
Of course the montrose and pickwicks(which had another slightly different name to young lads) I never actually went to either but I heard enough about them.I'll bet you The Cavern was brilliant no matter what decade you went there,I loved it,and I think Erics only lasted a few years but the impact it had on the local music scene can't be underestimated,i think you were lucky to have been a part of it.

You must have been a fan of our very own black band "the real thing" then?
Pickwicks on a Tuesday night - lol
Howie 05-07-2006, 08:32 PM The Gladray (well Gloria was legendary)
lindylou 05-09-2006, 02:47 PM You must have been a fan of our very own black band "the real thing" then?
I remember them when they were starting out and they were playing in the L'pool clubs. Their original name - if I'm not mistaken, was 'Vocal Perfection' .... (or was that the 'Christians' - my memory is getting rusty !! ..
.. yes, It was Vocal Perfection - and the Christians were originally called 'Natural High' ) :D
There were lots of other brilliant singers and bands - sadly never getting a foothold in the music world. There was another L'pool Soul group called 'The Gems' ..
.. and so many more, especially in the 1970s, too many to mention. The local music scene was great up until the late 1980s or thereabouts .. I reckon Karaoke has a lot to answer to !! It more or less killed the local band circuit.
Loads of acts started out doing the local pubs.
I mean - hardly any pubs & clubs hire singers and bands now. It's all Karaoke. UGH !
There was a time when there would be a different variety of live acts on every week. You would look in the Echo to see who was playing where, and what was on at any number of places.
Still, things change I suppose.
lindylou 05-09-2006, 02:48 PM The Gladray (well Gloria was legendary)
oh yeah - The Gladray  ... and Gloria !! ( wonder where she is now ! ?? )
Howie 05-09-2006, 03:27 PM oh yeah - The Gladray  ... and Gloria !! ( wonder where she is now ! ?? )
I remember she had a book published (quite some years ago) titled 'Nice Girl Like Me'. :slywink:
sweetpatooti 05-09-2006, 05:56 PM I heard that Gloria sadly passed away - but that could be urban myth - who remembers Dutch Eddies???
I used to go to Voodoo at Le Bateaux
Cream at Nation, and also Medication there on a Monday night.
And Planet X on Hanover Street.
Used to go to Macs which was under Waterstones on Bold Street.
Gone now, but probably my ever fave Liverpool club. :)

Yes, Dutch Eddies. Very small dance floor and tiny stage where the band would play. I always remember the time an over enthusiasic dance partner spun me around too fast and I fell into the band  :celb (23):

Paul D 10-04-2006, 05:12 AM LIVERPOOL ERIC’S
all the best clubs are downstairs,
everyone knows that…
by Paul Whelan & Jaki Florek, published by Feedback due out December 2006.
It will be available in shops and by mail order from www.feedbackmagazine.org.
At last: A great big fat book about Eric’s – starring the people who went there as regulars, worked there, formed bands and played there: Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Teardrop Explodes, Wah! Heat, The Spitfire Boys with Budgie on drums and Paul Rutherford on vocals, Pete Burns… and of course Jayne Casey in Big In Japan, whose line up included Bill Drummond, Dave Balfe, Holly Johnson, Ian Broudie, Clive Langer.
Roger Eagle started Eric’s club in Mathew Street with Ken Testi in October 1976, soon joined by Pete Fulwell, but the book goes back in time before Eric’s to include Deaf School, Supercharge, The Liverpool Stadium, and the days of the original Cavern Club…
In 1976 Eric’s regular Pete Wylie was sitting in a café in Mathew Street, making a mug of tea last all afternoon while he fantasised about becoming a rock star…. August 2006 he opened Liverpool’s Mathew Street Festival on the main stage, singing with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
It is now Europe’s biggest free festival, with stages across the city of Liverpool attracting crows of 350,000 people. Back in ’76 the festival held in Mathew Street involved a few local bands, a statue of Carl Jung, and a skip full of custard for people to jump into!!
Paul Whelan was too young to have gone to Eric's, but was a big fan of early 80s music. As a teenager, one of his favourite bands was The Teardrop Explodes.
Fast forward to 2000. At a low point in his life, he revisited all the music that had happy memories for him, and started a website. A couple of years later, it was pointed out to him that a lot of those bands were linked to Eric’s club… and what he then heard about Eric’s gave him the idea that a book should be written about it. He started doing taped interviews: anybody, everybody, no-one was safe!
He even got an interview with Mick Hucknall, who played Eric’s with his band Frantic Elevators. Roger Eagle nurtured and encouraged Mick, and crucially put him together with Liverpool bluesman Al Peters, in a band called The Lawnmower.
Eventually, Paul ended up with a big box of taped interviews…
Jaki Florek did go to Eric’s to see the bands, and also played there a few times in her first band. She typed up the tapes, and over the next three years added more interviews, research, and pulled the book together so it almost makes sense...
Having seen 'Bridge Over Muddy Water', published by Feeedback, a collection of stories from Halton musicians going back 70 years, Paul decided his idea for a book about Eric’s was in good hands.
Here at Feedback it was agreed it would be an interesting and worthwhile project to get involved with. Many Widnes and Runcorn folk made a regular pilgrimage to Eric's, and prior to that, The Liverpool Stadium - where Roger Eagle promoted bands before starting the Eric's Club. Meet up again with Paul and Terry from The Fetch, and Clive from The Pond Dwellers!
So many people have been involved in the book, we’ve lost count – Big Thanks are due to everyone who has helped out, especially Alan Peters and Hilary Steele who have provide loads of crucial photographs, and Paul Simpson. And Doreen Allen. And Geoff Davies. And… the list goes on!
Gary Gleavey, who was responsible for the brilliant artwork that made ‘Bridge Over Muddy Water’ more than ‘just a book’ has already started on the arduous task of design and layout, and Awards For All have come up trumps by part-funding the printing of the first run of the book.
We do believe that the heritage of Eric's, Probe Records, and the Matthew Street scene in the 70's rivals that of the now acknowledged heritage of the '60's - The Beatles and The Cavern Club - which was also in Matthew Street!

The Moonstone in St John's Precinct was where I first saw Supercharge (http://www.jjrecords.co.uk/jjcd001.htm). The place started to attract black clientele and in those unenlightened early/mid '70s years, it earned the pathetic nickname "Coonstone":disgust:
lindylou 10-04-2006, 05:20 PM Yeah, I remember it very well. The Moonstone had some good live bands on.
We always went there to see Supercharge. :)
Urban 10-04-2006, 09:47 PM The Mardi on Bold Street was good in its day
I use to go to the Moonstone and the Sportsman to see 29th and Dearbourne, Supercharge, Rocking Horse, Rock School and all the others.
Remember the Mardi, Casa and the Gladray, Macs was a great club especialy Sunday nights.
Does anyone remember Scamps or Romeo and Juliets?
Now I was a member of Erics from the begining (I still have my free membership card to prove) seen then all the Clash, Costello, SLF, ****ed, Skids, XRay Spec, The Specials with Madness as support, the beginings of the Bunnymen, OMD, Big in Japan, Dead or Alive, AFOS.
Would go Fridays, Saturday two shows under 18s in the afternoon and then the evening shows and Sundays when you would see what Roger Eagle wanted Liverpool to experience such as major Reggae or Blues artists.
shytalk 10-04-2006, 11:07 PM The Mardi on Bold Street was good in its day
The Mardi Gras I went to from its' opening in 1958 was at the bottom of Mount Pleasant, previously it was a billiard hall, it was over Turners auction rooms. It was demolished to build a multi story car park and multi screen cinema, later to be the 051 club I think.
When did the Mardi Gras move to Bold St.?

Le Bateaux sucks! Too small and a dump.
They closed a toilet once because it was overwhelmed with puke and the bowl was overflowing with it like in Ghostbusters 2.
Paul D 10-15-2006, 07:48 PM The importance of Erics has
always been underplayed because there was a point in the 80's when the top 40 singles chart included something like 18 records by people who had attended
the gig by The Clash there, that's unbelievable isn't it.
I totally agree with you
Paul.
Matthew Street was a hive of activity off the beaten track, there was Erics, Probe Record, Action Replay Records, Armadillo Tea rooms, Grapes and
White Star pubs.
If you look at the Liverpool bands that had links with Erics.WAH, Ellery Bop, OMD, Big in Japan featuring Holly Johnson, Ian Brodie (The
Lighting Seeds) Bunnymen, Teardrops, Dad or Alive, the list could go on.

The Cavern (the most famous club in the World) Eric's (got to be one of the most influential),Cream (has
events all over the World from Moscow to Uruguay and even Garlands is in Ibiza now, that's why we are European capital of Culture.
christy 11-18-2006, 02:25 PM never started going to clubs till late 80's
First ever club with mates was the Moonstone in the precinct followed by Nightriders (freewheelers) in wood street. Used to watch bands in the Cumberland, Planet x (both Hannover street and the one off Dale street), the academy in Hannover street.
Because my mates where a mix of tastes we went to different places all the time. Partners, The Grafton, Chaucers, the Casa, The Conti on a Tuesday, Maxwell's plum, The Ebo, The Mardi, The Quad, The Underground, The state, Pickwicks (ashamedly), Images, Coconut grove, The She, Rio's, Hunters Lodge, Fallows, Paradox............
Always loved clubs and the atmosphere, especially just before they open

When did the Mardi Gras move to Bold St.?
About 1973.
From 1908 to 1929 it was a cinema called the Mount Pleasant Hall.
Renamed the Century just before it closed when it showed foreign films.
This 1966 photo is from "Ainscough's Liverpool", one of my favourite books.
shytalk 11-18-2006, 09:29 PM Thanks PhilipG,
I was one of the first members there in about 1958. It was a great club, we used to go in the Beehive pub opposite for a few then on to the Mardi. It was opened by Stan Roberts and Jim Ireland, they went on to open numerous clubs and manage a lot of bands. The manager was Harry Ormesher who I knew previously from his 'photo shop in Seaforth Rd. He later became a world renowned photographer. The doorman was Alan Tanner, aka Alan Adrian a Jamaican ex boxer. There was rarely any trouble there. In those days you could park your car outside as long as you didn't obstruct the bus stop.
The building must have had extensive modification to make it 2 story as it was when I went there.
Thanks for the pic it brought back a lot of memories.
The White Star isn't in Matthew St. the address is in Button St.
So was Probe, so was replay records and the white star all on Button Street, but knew the area around there as Matthew Street
shytalk 11-18-2006, 10:01 PM S'ok just an ex hackney driver being picky :)
Bloody taxi driver :)
only joking mate, you were right about the street, good little boozer the white star
shytalk 11-18-2006, 10:20 PM Yes, I owned and drove taxis for 16 years then emmigrated to the USA in 1981.
Now retired and living up in the Ozark mountains.
jimmy 11-19-2006, 11:24 AM I remember the Iron Door, The Pyramid. The Twenty One Club, and some clubs around Upper Parliment st.

I used to go to The Cave (Radio Jackie Norths the Cave! It had a DJ called Rik Dane who ran a pirate rock radio station of that name) which I think was really Brady's the successor to Erics after it had turned into a Rock club. The Nightriders/Freewheelers above the Bar Royale which was above the Wilsons pub and all owned by Sadie - Sloanes now the Krazyhouse. Always disliked Milos 'cos of its poodle RAWK :) I think it was named after John Mylett from local band Rage / Nutz and once drummer on childrens TV lunchtime show I think called Our Back Yard or something who'd died along with Alison his girlfriend in a car crash in Spain - hence the Alisons bar part at the top end of the pub and I spent many nights in the Planet at both locations as well.

Prefferred the women in Milo's, Nightriders women intimidated me at that age! Did you ever go to Rockfords ? We used to go over sometimes when Milo's shut at 1 o'clock, for the last hour or so. What was the name of the club (began with an 'S') behind probe upstairs (where Coast is now). Remember it was full of the reminents of the Punk, Rockabilly, Psyhcobilly thing, used to enjoy them giving each other a hiding to King Kurt or Jailhouse rock or something. The Pink Parrot was another alternative if fancied a change and some Goths. Such a shame that these clubs don't exist any more. Like the casa, for all the good the dockers have done with it, still preferred the old place. Once had a very strange night in there with my mates and Wayne Sleep!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ChrisGeorge 11-20-2006, 12:57 AM Hi all
The Mardi Gras Club is very familiar to me although I don't believe I was ever in it. I just remember girls talking about "the Mardi." I was not a big club goer when I lived in Liverpool in the Sixties, though I did go to the Sink Club on Leece Street up from St. Luke's Church circa 1965, when Tony Jackson, ex of the Searchers played there, and I was later on quite a number of occasions in the Chequers Club on Seel Street.
Chris

Was it the swinging apple?
Ross08 11-21-2006, 12:52 AM The PARADOX at Ormskirk Rd. Aintree was a real Liverpool venue.
Can anyone tell me when this club closed?
Also, where was The She? I've heard a few mentions of this club but don't know where it was.
And of course there was the famous "Shakey" in town.
Motorhemp 11-21-2006, 02:14 AM Was it the swinging apple?
Swinging Apple was the predecessor of Nightriders / Wilsons bar on Wood Street - not sure too, young at the time Rainfords was the rock club at the back of button street for a while. Rockfords was off St. Johns Garden by where the Italian and Chinese restaurants are now. Too many beers tonight (and then) to remember accurately... :) Liverpool has always had a large non-conformist music population - not always as cool as punk stuff but there and vibrant anyway...
Lost most of my teeth outside Casablanca (as I still call it) to some scallys from Chauffers in the 80s - still prefer the old unilt Casa to modern version (30pence entrance if they bothered asking) but thats probably age - I especially remember the first room with just a jukebox for light and no way of telling what the girl you where chatting to looked like! Good job they couldn't either ;)

Now this is suddenly weird 'cos I remember meeting Wayne Sleep in the Casablanca!
I think the She was on Dale Street.
LABlue 11-21-2006, 02:00 PM I used to go to The Cave (Radio Jackie Norths the Cave! It had a DJ called Rik Dane who ran a pirate rock radio station of that name) .
Bloody hell that takes me back - late 1970s. Rik used to DJ at the Lincolns Inn - a bikers club near where BHS cafe is now (dont know the street name) -behind Probe.
I remember him for always playing AC/DC no matter what you asked him for.
Paul D 11-21-2006, 02:18 PM Was it the swinging apple?
Sounds a bit seedy to me.
lindylou 11-21-2006, 03:35 PM I think the She was on Dale Street.
I think it was by the Lisburn bar on Victoria st.
I never went to that club but I heard a lot about it !!
It was in the same league as Pickwicks or the Grafton 'grab a granny,' from what I could make out !! :unibrow:
PhilipG 11-21-2006, 04:50 PM The She club was in Victoria Street.
It was, I didn't mean Dale but Victoria
Motorhemp 11-21-2006, 11:44 PM Bloody hell that takes me back - late 1970s. Rik used to DJ at the Lincolns Inn - a bikers club near where BHS cafe is now (dont know the street name) -behind Probe.
I remember him for always playing AC/DC no matter what you asked him for.
I think the Lincolns Inn was later Rainfords.
Rik died in 2002. He'd also been involved in Radio Atlantis another pirate radio station. There's an article on him including soundbites at link below.

The Teardrop Explodes 11-22-2006, 12:44 AM 1. Temptation @ the Uni circa 1989-1992. Loads of different rooms, underground corridors of intrigue, main dance area amazing, girls to fall in love with. Oh yeah and live bands like Suede.
2. The (old) Casablanca. Red light-bulbs, bitter old bassads, curry on chips, the occasional milf/ neurotic nympho's, nympho students, Lee Mavers, Marlon Brando and Somali blokes. Great for skanky underground magical memories untill about 94' or something when it closed and reopened without the seediness or the magic or the Somali's.
3. Planet X. Both in Temple St, and Hanover St this was an anti-scally institution. 1988-1992 were my years of rage!
4. The State. 1987, a time someone described as the club's 'Smith's years'. Grand.
5. Pink Parrot, Duke St. Like a lite version of the Planet. For a while it really worked.
6. Mardi Gras. Never had the finest of nights here, never really had a handle on the 'direction' of the place and the music was always a bit too obvious for me. Was a good space though, in retrospect, compromised by a lack of identity.
7.Heebeejeebee's. Mid 90's. Flu, girls, cliques, french pop, girls, cliques, snow, and flu.
8. Le Bateau. It works.

Watch this clip of the Quad it's unbelievable there was nothing like it,at the end it's as if someone has just scored the winning goal in the last minute of a European Cup Final or something, truly great memories of one of Liverpool's finest clubs.:celb (23):
And then there's was the all nighter which was all of this plus 10,000 other party animals, fond memories indeed.:PDT_Aliboronz_24:

Their electric guitars jangled in our ears,
The Searchers, Liverpool, 1965--the stuffy

to "What Have They Done to the Rain?"
Afterward, the bus trip to Tunnel Road;
we kissed in a chandler's shop doorway.
I can still taste your Beechnut chewing gum.

Anyone remember Rotters, and as for bands A Flock of Seagulls never get the recognition they deserve,2 Grammies and millions of record sales.

Fruit Machine 12-30-2006, 12:23 PM This thread has brought back so many memories of the clubs I used to go to. Right back to the teen scene days of the The Quad, and Fallows in Aintree, through to pre-Cream Nation and more recently Garlands.
For some reason, I never got to experience The State, something that guts me, given it's so legendary in Liverpool clubland.
Amazingly, I never got to go to Secret's in Litherland either (where I'm from), as they always said I looked too young. Strange, as I was frequenting gay and straight clubs in town from the age of 14 as I always looked much older than my mates. I did however go to the back club of Secret's called 'Clouds' around 86-87, anyone else remember that? Victoria perhaps?
Other clubs/bars from back in the day that I loved were Mardi Gras (especially the Kylie/Madonna nights from the early 90's), Macmillan's, Early Garland's, The She, Jody's, Reflections, Baa Bar, Escape (R.I.P), ESP.... too many, all mostly, and sadly, gone.

I remember Clouds, I was too young to go then... I think it was called Allinsons before Secrets and Clouds came along.
You never missed much with Secrets though, it was typical Hitman & Her stuff... bad light shows, bad DJs, watered down ale and sticky floors... 01:50 the slowies would start and you would get the lounge lizards come out, not bought you one drink all night but want a slow dance and a snog on the dancefloor from you... as if! :)
Went to Jody's too, my uncle is gay so we did a bit of a tour... think we ended up in Images... seen some sights that night :D
Baa Bar is still going isn't it?
Haven't been there for a good few years though... I have an old mixed CD from the Baa Bar, good stuff :PDT_Piratz_26:
Paul D 12-30-2006, 04:35 PM Fallows is now the Time Out kids play area I've been told,I've been there loads of times with the kids and I never knew that, just shows you how wrecked I was when I used to go there.

Paul D 12-30-2006, 04:47 PM Oh Paul, thats shocking, lol
Come on.:celb (23):
Fantastic thread - thanx guys n' gals ha ha. Being a 16 year old school leaver in 78 (around the time of Night Fever and Grease, my mates and I were happy to get in any clubs that would have us so usually frequented the Tiger, Livvo's and Gatsby's. Graduated to Eric's (actually played there when it was Brady's and played the She too) The Tiger became Shanks and I actually got served in Pickwicks in 77 at the first ever Beatles convention on JL's birthday 9th Oct. Reading through this thread I can say that Motorheap has the name right about Milo's and that Probe Records was actually in Rainford Square but as John/Shytalk point out, it is now known as the Mathew st quarter anyway around there.
Other clubs at that time were Ugly's (how appropriate) and the Babalou. The city centre has so many pubs that we'd usually do a different crawl each night from thurs to sunday. The top one would start out at the Phil, down Hardman St with The Flying Picket, Chaucers, Plummers, Kirklands, Streets, Hardy's then Bertrums. The next night might start at the Excelsior or Mitre, along Dale st to the Vernon, down Stanley st to the Gingerbread Man then the New Court bar/Captain's cabin then back up Cumberland st where there was the Cumberland, Rudi's then either end up in La Fayette/Joleen's or the old dive The Gaslight. Another crawl would see us down the bottom end of town. Tom Hall's Tavern, the Slaughter House, The cornfield?, Pig & Whistle, The Queens, Trials, Pen & Wig, Why not, The Liverpool. I'd be a millionaire by now if I'd stayed in but not richer in memories.
5th beatle 01-02-2007, 01:56 PM Well remember the likes of Le Bateau, Clouds ...etc but the one that stands out for me was the Harrington Bar in Harrington Street (opposite what is now Cavern Walks but was just waste ground back in 1980-82)
It is still there but has sadly been closed for a long time now. However, at the time it was one of the only places, along with the the short lived Michelle Clares off Dale street that played new wave / new romantic, especially Bowie, kraftwerk, Human League ....etc
It was officially a club as it had a downstairs where you could get something to eat. I also remember a sign next to the DJ that said 'Please don't ask for disco as we won't play it' !. Most of the bouncers were gay, big butch skinheads who could be found in Pacos, Lisbon during the week !!.
I put a ? after the Cornfield as it didn't sound right in my mind, it was of course the Cornmarket. Livvo's was Livingstones. Another route would be The Rose & Crown, Rigby's, the Saddle (old Palatine) Dove & Angel above the State, Daley's Dandelion and Reflections or Houlians bar which were part of it at the back and upstairs. Also Scarlets bar up Hackins Hey, the railway and Lion on Tithebarn street etc. Living off Dale street as I did then courtesy of the caretakers flat that went with my dads job , the city centre was my local.

I used to go there,I remember they all used to go mad when Simple Minds or Jimmy Somerville came on,there were loads of interesting haircuts in that place I seem to remember.
The Gardens 01-09-2007, 11:10 PM The Harrington circa 1980; The Passenger, Empire State Human, Where's Capatin Kirk etc. I also remember not knowing what to do when dancing to the change of tempo bit of Vienna!!
Motorhemp 01-10-2007, 12:30 AM So many pub and club names in this thread my head is spinning... The Harrington - did that become McCartneys or something for a while? Michelle Clares, Shanks (what about Shanks 2?), The Cumberland with the bands always playing the same Bad Company tracks every time you went there, the Pink Parrot was good while it lasted, what about the Cabin? the old Casablanca was a fave never was the same after the extension in the back got built and it started to smarten up, the Planet-X was great - they used to have organised buses coming in from out of town at one point (I think from Chester), the Mardi Gras - a mate worked there in the late 80s I think, I'm sure Macmillans was one of the only places you could get a later night pint in Liverpool on a Sunday (legitimately) and even that was only 11ish, what about the old licensing laws with afternoon closing time, I can hardly remember them but it lead to Flintlocks cornering the market for the last working day before christmas pissup in the town centre as it stayed open right through. Will any one else admit they ever drank in the Wilsons!
Paul D 01-10-2007, 05:48 AM Remember Earl St Johns by where Queens Square is now?:)
Yeah ha ha Earl St. John's and Cindy's at the tunnel end of Victoria st. Who's going to admit to remembering Tiffany's which was down the side of India Buildings.
lindylou 01-10-2007, 01:04 PM Me !! :D
I only went in with my friend during the lunch hour to meet up with her husband who worked there.
I never went there on a night out.
lindylou 01-10-2007, 06:13 PM :Colorz_Grey_PDT_16: :D
sweetpatooti 01-10-2007, 06:18 PM Me too - went dancing every lunch hour and then bombed back to work late!! Tiffany's played some good funk and soul in the lunch hour.:celb (23):
Motorhemp 01-10-2007, 06:20 PM Was Tiffany's actually in India buildings and you used the lightwell staircase at the side (Brunswick St?) to get in?
sweetpatooti 01-10-2007, 06:22 PM Yes you could get in that way. It was underneath India Buildings.
Motorhemp 01-10-2007, 06:30 PM He he - I worked there in the old basement room years after the club shut. Its empty again and last I heard a club owner may be interested - Tiffany's 2???
The Gardens 01-10-2007, 07:17 PM When Livo's (Livingstones, Stanley Street) closed down, we all migrated to The Maderin in Victoria Street. Also I used to like the Gingerbread in Stanley Street, again the days before a late licence.
st3v3 01-11-2007, 05:32 PM i drank in wilsons it was my downtown local . checkamates was the 1st club i went 2 it was next door 2 and part of chequers. then there was cagneys roxy bowie nights and planet x but my fave venue was michelle claires dingy basement club with occasional rockabilly gang fights thrown in . the gorgeous mandy was one of the dj's red haired bowie fan from the band zale out her boyfirend was phil jones from afraid of mice later the legendery jones 's goodtimes 1980 . later on mid 80's the heavey metal thing was when i went 2 wilsons and the crazy house regularly and again lovely goth barmaid cant remember her name too much alcohol obviously
Phil Jones is still going strong. Went to see the duo as 'Afraid of Mice' on the Star & Garter that was built into St. Johns precinct in 81, they later became two's a crowd. He's on the old Pen & Wig every sat now, sometimes on the First National too. Another place I used to go was the Mayflower in Fazakerly st, a local of mine with living off Dale st but marred sometimes by the fights between the vauxhall lads and the 'kirkby's'.
christy 01-23-2007, 05:23 PM This is a boss thread.
Tiffany's - my dad worked on the door there when I was a kid and I remember going there loads of times in the day as well as to parties.
I drank in the Wilsons which had the best jukebox anywhere at the time but I was late 87 onwards. Some great bands in there - Engine, Roadhouse etc
The Goth Barmaid was Kerry - she was seeing my mate at the time
Shankly's, Bunters, Earl St Johns/Rockfords and Gatsby's where all owned by the same people (also had the Coconut grove and Alinsons in Bootle
What was the pub called in the precinct with the pickwickian type windows and rough brick frontage?

Gerard.
Somebody from Australia asked would I take a pic - that's why I had it to hand.
This is what he said:
"Many (many) years ago I was a doorman at a place off Lord Street. Going towards the Pier Head down Lord Street on the RIGHT was a narrow lane wide enough for one car (I think it was called Dorans Lane). Halfway along this lane on the LEFT hand side was a doorway called the "Bears Paw" beyond this double door was a staircase leading down to a very "60's decorated" bar and cocktail lounge. it was owned by one Harry Issacs and managed by a John Kerr. - At the end of Dorans Lane it became Harrington Street and if you turned LEFT here you came to another doorway which was part of the same place (all basements). This was called the Swiss Chalet which in its day was a disco. I was the doorman (bouncer!) on both although this was some 35 years ago and I doubt much would be left?"

At the Time Phil about 1971 I went only on a Sunday night when I was about 15..(Think it was a Sunday).
I only went because half the School I went to
(St Gregorys now Campion Prince Edwin St) went as well to see Our Gym Teacher..
Half the School next Day were Rotten Drunk..Yeah must have been a Sunday Night..Happy Days..
What did he do Though..Was he Co-owner..Doorman...or something else...Ged..Times up lad!!!
Over an Hour now mate..Sacked !!!
Not sure Phil if the Club had any Gay connections on other Nights..
Gerard 01-24-2007, 01:06 PM Gerard, I give up, my ear's red raw, I only wanted the answer but my gran kept me on for ages and now i've gotta do her messages, my brother said I only ring when I want something, I got two wrong numbers and Huxam's is ringing out.
Go ead lar - what did he do?
The Swiss Chalet it was Ged and Huxam was a DJ...Boss as well mate.
See..I knew you were on the phone..
Did yer see this in reply to your other one !!

Come clean (and I mean about the other nights)
Yeah, saw that mate.
Do you remember Huxam's orange VW beetle with those zany black markings and stripes. Original and cool.
Gerard 01-24-2007, 01:11 PM Come clean (and I mean about the other nights)
Ok..Me and Alice America were best mates..Straight up..She (He) fancied me when I had me Bryan Ferry Quiff...Gerry Ferry..Coooooooooooooll.

Do you remember Huxam's orange VW beetle with those zany black markings and stripes. Original and cool.
"Yeah, saw that mate."
Does that "Yeah, saw that mate" mean I'm right Ged and you/your book are Wrong Lad !!
Just that I admitted I was wrong over Gatsby's and now you pull me up again..
Its no big deal saying..
Yep..Im wrong and your right..I said it..

Gerard 01-24-2007, 03:17 PM To see him do what? :gossip:
Strip?
Disc Jockey Phil..Nothing too exciting I know but he was that popular and the Kids all wanted to see him in action so to speak.
I've been told he now says He never Dj'd in there..Take it from me he Did..
It's a good job Crowley or Grocott never had him in over the coals explaining having half of Greg's in there eh. :celb (6):
Gerard 01-24-2007, 04:00 PM No, that 'Yeah saw that mate' means I saw your link to a manchester site saying that the Reeces where they had the wedding reception was the one in your pic, it's not my book that says the other Reeces but a Liverpool tour guide book <wink>
I'm not pulling you up, I said 'I have a question for you' - that's a different thing altogether innit <wink wink> so I was asking you a question as to whether it was that Reeces or the other Reeces as I don't know when the Reeces in your pic opened?
I wasn't trying to catch you out over Gatsby's, it's just that having played there, I knew it was Victoria st and having visited Gullivers at the inaugral 77 Beatles convention in Pickwicks, I knew it was once trophys that's all mate <wink wink, nudge nudge say no more>
Would have made me look a bit of a fool though would'nt it what with me goin on about the Beatles and all that...
Didnt you think That Ged !!!....Why Not PM me then ...
Good job I was Right Eh....
AND YOU WERE WRONG..THERE..I'LL SAY IT FOR YER SEEING YER CANT GET THE WORDS OUT..Haa haaaaa
I'd get shut of that book as well...Lol..
I'm not trying to be a smart arse Ged or fall out with yer Lad but I wouldn't have done that mate....
Thats all...Had to get it off me chest.
That's alright mate :handclap:
I might even be imagining things but if I find the pic, i'll post it up with the title of the book so anyone with it can burn it ha ha.
I'm glad there's another Beatle nut on here, keep it up lar.
Gerard 01-24-2007, 04:38 PM "It could only have made you look a fool if you were wrong Gerard"
Good job I wasnt then Eh Ged..
Your Question was implying I was Wrong,
"It could only have made you look a fool if you were wrong Gerard"..
Arrr..is that Right..So if I was wrong..That OK Then if I'm made to look a fool..
Didn't that bother you..Obviously Not Eh..
This can go on all Day here as its Obvious you wont admit you were wrong..
So I'll tell yer what Ged..Im wrong..and your Right..
How does That grab yer....I'll admit I'm wrong all day Ged...Thats if I am wrong mate...No Big Deal to me Lad...
A bit surprised too be Honest with you though Ged...
I thought a Man of your Spit would hold his hands up when He's wrong.
Just Shows yer Eh Lad...
lindylou 01-24-2007, 05:14 PM As Philip has already said, Reeces was in Parker st - the Owen Owen building.
I used to go there for the Friday night discos early 1970s. Sometimes there would be a live band or singer like Edwin Starr. :)
The disco was always Mowtown & Soul music.
The guys had to wear a tie to get in.
Gerard 01-24-2007, 05:20 PM Firstly Gerard. I asked you a question, go back and take a look. It wasn't implying you were wrong, I was asking (as I wasn't there in 62 and neither were you) if that Reeces that I went to as a cafe in 79 was the very same one as a book I have suggested that it was another one - that's all Gerard.
As it is I still don't know for sure do I until I check later when I get home.
If you are right, then it's made you look brilliant so don't look at it as the glass half empty mate - you've made the grade - but the manc website could be wrong so i'm just trying to find out for definite for my own research that's all as there are two conflicting accounts- no hidden agenda mate.
I'll tell you what, because I knew of the Reeces you mentioned (because as I say i've been there) and I didn't know of the other - i'll admit that I wrongly believed that it could have been the other one and you as an expert has put me right - how about that then. As I say, I didn't know for sure so I couldn't be saying you were wrong could I, I could only be asking you a question - which I was.
It's a good job I don't include it on my Beatles tours then as I might've been taking punters the wrong place lol. Let's take a chill pill now.
Yes I know you were asking a Question Ged..And your Question wasnt saying I was right either..It was suggesting I was wrong,And if I hadn' proved I was right then the Doubters would have thought you were Correct..Because your Book says so....
All I'm saying all along here is that if I had any Doubts over anything you put on here then I would have sent you a PM before doing what you did knowing it could make you look a right plonker..
Yer Know...Knowing each other for 30 odd years or whatever it is..
Ged....Please dont call me an Expert..Whats an Expert !!!..Someone who likes the sound of his own noise..Noooooooooooo mate...Deffo not me.
Chill Ged..and lets move on now Eh..

PhilipG 01-24-2007, 07:13 PM I remember it a bit later when it was a bar.
Used to go at dinnertimes (or Lunch, as I say!).
Was it all Tudor-like when it was Reeces?

Yeah, I went to the Top Rank. Every time I hear the record 'Spirit In The Sky' it takes me right back to there - it was number one in the charts at the time and we were all dancing like mad to it in the Top Rank, ha,ha :D
I saw that black group from Manchester - their name escapes me - they had a no.1 hit with 'Sad Sweet Dreamer' .. they were on live at the club one Saturday night.

Sad Sweet dreamer was by Sweet Sensation, great song.
D'yer remember Them LP's..Top of the Pops.
They had the Dolly Birds/Page 3 girls on them..
Jilly Johnson was deffo my favourite !!
They had all the hits of the time on them and a Crap Version of Norman Greenbaum's Spirit in the Sky.
Used to get mine from Woolies on London Rd.
Gerard 01-24-2007, 09:46 PM What about "Oscars" bottom of Hanover Street..
Great disco Downstairs and Boss Chicken in the Basket upstairs.
The Steve Gibbons band (Tulane) were on there one night and his Roadies had done one or something and me and the Lads, who were well in with the Management at the time ended up having a stay behind with Steve Gibbons and being his Roadies about 4 O'clock in the morning..
Ross08 01-24-2007, 09:51 PM Probably not best described as a Legendary Liverpool Club - not in terms of the Shakey and the old Merseybeat sort of venues anyway - but the Paradox, if anyone's interested is now 95% demolished. In fact, only the clock tower remains.
I find this quite sad to be honest, two parts of Liverpool history gone - of course the Paradox and before that, Vernons.

Jilly Johnson - I remember her .. and I remember Woolies on London rd.
I remember all the other clubs mentioned further back in the thread, ie; Beachcomber, Chequers, etc. What about the Babalou ? Did you go there?
I didn't bother much with these clubs. I went to them maybe once or twice - but it was the Victoriana for me :) :) I used to go there 2 or 3 times a week. Thursday nights and the weekend nights. Me and may mate were obsessed with the place ! lol ! :celb (23):
lindylou 01-24-2007, 10:37 PM Was the Curzon also the Masquerade?
The Masquerade was first called 'The Archways' and was in Hocken Hall alley (spelling ?). Harry Halliday ran the place and the name changed to Masquerade. The club moved to the old Red Dragon restaurant in Cases st. The next move was because of the Clayton shopping mall getting built and the club had to move on - it went to the Temple next.
Not sure where it's located now. Somewhere around the Dale st vicinity ?
ps,
the Curzon is a different place.

Hiya Lindylou.
The Masquerarde is in Cumberland Street opposite the Old PO on Victoria Street,
The Temple was the 1st Bar I got barred from for being under age and was one of my Favourites,
Living on Scottie we used to walk alonng Dale St,Have a bash at the Yard of ale in that One at the Bottom of Cheapie,Forget what its called Now..
On to the Temple,Palatine,Scarlet Bar,The Vaults,Why Not,,,Hated the Pen and Wig...The Beehive on Paradise St and then The Triton and off to The Hotsy or the Tiger..Started going a bit up market later and went the Beechy, Babalou Etc !!!..
Next week it would be the Lime St Bash..Got to know a Few Gay lads who were always in the Temple..They'd say to us Windin' us up.."Gerrover to such and such a place Lad..We'll make sure yer alright in there"...
Anyway...One weekend when we are on the Lime St Route we went and Found this place Somewhere around Wood St..Yer Know I have'nt got a clue where it was to this Day.. Phil will Know..Phil...what was it called !!!!.
Anyway when we get there its.."I'm not goin' in that F'n place" !!!!!!!!!!!!...
So we get in there and I've never seen anything like it in me Life..
All the Fella's Dressed up as Women..Imagine it Now!!..Dancin' with each other and Generally just a Ball...Fantastic Night..and what a great bunch of Fellas....Err Queens!!!......Brilliant..
That one in Hockenhall Alley off Dale st is now the Arriva bus club.
The place that used to be the Walter, next to ye hole in the wall in Hackins Hey is a gay pub now, it's called Jupiters. Got mates who sing on the karaok in the Saddle sat nights then go there for a game of pool. The staff get up on the bar at the end doing all the actions to Rolf Harris' 'The court of king caratacus'
By the way Gerard, you were right of course. The pamplet I had, obviously not very well researched was superceded by 'in the footsteps of the Beatles' book by the council which has the location right. It was a genuine question, i'd been a bit lazy in not checking my more up to date reference book. Sorry if you think I was trying to make you look bad because I wasn't. See ya soon.

I remember findin' 2 Tenners though outside in the Street..
Yeahhhhhhhh...That got me out the next night !!
Wasn't Cindys called something else, was that the one round the Corner from Manchester St on Victoria Street !!..
What about The "Other Place" on Stanley St..Anyone remember that..
And heres one for yer...At the Bottom Of Harrington Street on the Same Side as the Why Not..Think its one of them Money Shops or Something Now..
In the Mid 70's that opened up as some Fancy wine Bar that sold Jugs of Sangria...Greaaaaaaaaaaaaaat !!!!...Looaaaaaaaaads of it..
Cant remember what that was called either..Any one know...
Motorhemp 01-25-2007, 06:34 PM What about The "Other Place" on Stanley St..Anyone remember that.
Wasn't that bar something to do with the union NALGO?
Gerard 01-25-2007, 06:52 PM Wasn't that bar something to do with the union NALGO?
Might well have been years after I went 75/76 when it was a great Disco.
The Gardens 01-25-2007, 08:28 PM 'The Other Place' was the first 'non pub' establishment I attended. We were a young looking 14/15 at the time! The girl taking our names at the counter downstairs even remarked she knew what school we went to. Joy for the days when you did not need ID or to hang around the 'Offy' asking someone to buy you 6 cans of lager. We may have been under age, but it kept us off the streets and made us 'responsible' drinkers (25p for half of lager).
That little side street between the kebab shop on Dale St and Stanley St, was the Other place down there, or could you get to it from down there?, seem to remember a sign but never went in there - good job actually - sounds like there were some dodgy characters.
The Nalgo one used to be the Gingerbread in Stanley street I think, on the right hand side as you go down.
Used to drink in Scarlett's bar on Hackin's Hey - downstairs, but you could come up another set and end up in the Crooked Billet - an entirely different pub altogether and then go out into Exchange Street East. Facing you there would be the Schooner Inn, built into the corner of Exchange flags. Played in there with the groundpig lads when they were called Riley in 81.
lindylou 01-25-2007, 09:27 PM 'The other Place' .. I went there a few times. :)
The Victoriana, which was in Victoria st for years, closed down approx mid 1970s then the club re opened under a new name.
Was that where Cindy's was ? Or was the new name Gullivers?
by the way, does anyone remember Terry O'Neil who was a doorman/bouncer at the Vic ? (early 70s) .. he was a First Dan (whatever it's called) Karate expert and he was in a couple of films - might have been doing stunt work or something like that.
Looking down Manchester Street in 1990.
The Tiger used to be in the middle, later renamed Shanks and then Shanks II after another re-fit. It was in here as the Tiger that while with my mates IN 1979,two Canadians got in our Company, fascinated with all things Liverpool and in particular the accent, they asked where the Cavern was as they were going to visit it next day. They blurted out crying when we told them it had been knocked down.
The Games shop was on the bottom corner, used to get my jigsaw puzzles from there, the Batch Hatch cafe and then a bit higher up, Callan, the military shop. The blue premises used to be Gilroy and County a few years previously. You can see the disused amusement arcade, Yates wine lodge and the old furniture shop which used to contain the Gilmore blue movie cinema above. Rose wouldn't leave the Batch Hatch because of the lousy money on offer when they redeveloped the block so it's all built around the little cafe which is now called 'me ma's kitchen'.

The Gilmore.
I didn't go there, honest!
A friend told me it got blown up.
Is that true?
It was demolished very quickly.

I once got the cafe and the Gilmore mixed up and went looking for the Snatch Hatch?
My brother, who did go there, honest, said a gas canister blew it up. I also mistook it for the cafe and ordered some crab sticks.

Good stuff,The Other place Ged was on Stanley St half way down on the left,Great Little place.
Alright Gerard, top o' the mornin'
I like Flares and the 80s bar now in Mathew st, showing me age. The only thing is, your feet stick to the floor - a bit grubby like.

I heard of somebody ordering finger pie.
Anyone remember Flintlocks, would open at 12pm on Chritmas Eve,youd fall out at 6pm ,thinkin it was 1am,thats when pubs didnt have liberal licensing, thank god for 24hr opening.

Last time I seen him, he was working on the door of a bar in Slater street. This was about 4 years ago - he did a lot of stunt and training work for films and trained Arnold Swartznegar(sp?) to use swords in Conan, even had some of his own star roles 0 one of which was playing a fictional character who was supposed to be Charlie Bronson, the infamous prisoner.
Done Flintlocks at Christmas a few times, loved it, Maxwells plum used to do the same but I think that might have been later(mid to late 80s)
Anyone ever go to Rio's around the back of Flintlocks?
lindylou 01-27-2007, 12:01 AM thanks for info about Terry O'Neil. There's probably something about him out there on the net - maybe some pictures. I'll have a look when I get time.
Perhaps he should go into our Scouser hall of fame :) ... well he was quite well known in L'pool.
The club Rios. We used to go there a lot.
Very disappointed when it turned into a rave club. :( it used to cater for average age 30s and upwards with a few younger ones mixed in. It was great for somewhere for the older clubbers to go. Then they changed it to a rave scene for 18 to 25s age group - so the regulars had to stop going. :(
There is hardly anywhere for older ones to go to. If you like to dance and don't like sitting in an alehouse all night there is very little else to choose from.
There's the Grafton Lindy :celb (6):
I like the characters in Renshaws, have you been there? 70s music, some 80s, I just can't stop looking around at people, gonna get me head kicked in one day lol.
Used to like Sapphires too in Bold st till it was shut down.
christy 01-27-2007, 12:21 PM I used to like Chauffeurs as well even though it was a dive. :) There is the Cabin at the top of Wood street that is still catering for an older crowd. Im pretty sure the Grafton is now a dance club at the weekend and only does the old Grafton thing on a Monday night. I could be wrong though.

Warrapenned there..Where did that day go !!!
Went that Sapphires once and av gorra say it was the Roughest hole I have ever been in.
Jeeeeeeeeeeesus Mary and Joseph..Talk about Who let the Dogs out.
Can remember some of the Clubs mentioned by name but cant remember goin' to them as I stopped goin' the Clubs around 1980 after gettin' married and the Kids came along,
Just thought of another one,Think It was called the Metro and it was a Heavy Music place just behind Watson and *****ard hidden in some back alley,
Remember seeing Thin Lizzy on the Cavern and about 12 people watching them, they were fantastic and still one of my Favourite Bands,
This was before my Lad was born and when our Ged was about 10 he wants a Guitar so I get him one and give him the "Whisky in the Jar" single and He's away..Another Lizzy nut in the House.
Went To Dublin with him for the "Vibe for Philo" gig on the 10th anniversary of his death and the show at The Point Depot.
Found out the Band were stayin' at this Westbury Hotel and went hangin around and after about an Hour John Sykes walks in the Foyer and brings us into the Bar and had a bevvie with Scott Gorham and Eric Bell..Boss or what !!

And a belated Top o' the mornin' to you Ged.
Found out the Band were stayin' at this Westbury Hotel and went hangin around and after about an Hour John Sykes walks in the Foyer and brings us into the Bar and had a bevvie with Scott Gorham and Eric Bell..Boss or what !!

john,Have just rang me Lad up and have had the Biggest Ear bashin' of me Life..
"Warra yer puttin that on them crank Websites about me for and all that"
Me ears are still ringin..Anyway...Lloyd Was...yes WAS in the Mighty wah but it looks like I made a mistake about the Video..
I have had a few slurps and thought it must be the same fella as in "Story of the Blues" video because there is no "Story of the Blues" on U Tube..Or at least I couldnt Find it and being half bevvied I thought that was Lloyd although I will admit that fella playin' the Bass did look a bit tall..yer know..I heard He's on "Story Of" so I presumed it was him..Genuine mistake mate.
Supppose you will now tell me he was not on the "Story of the Blues" Video.
Well I'll have to hold my hands up to that as well then..But I'll ask Lloyd next time I see him.
Checkout the OMD website by the way and you will see that a Lloyd fella was in the Band...Yep john..Thats Rrrr Lloyd mate..
Cause Our Ged has seen the Gold and Platinum Discs on the Wall Unless he made them Himself that is..
And I can Confirm that Tina Turner did get in touch with Lloyd and he Did Tour with Her..
Must be pretty good Eh john if Tina Turner comes lookin' for him.
And my Lad did have a No 1 in America as well by the way.
Sorry about the Genuine mistake john,,Easily done lad innit,Cause with Lloyds and Our Geds track record mate I dont have t' make things up Lad,
Hope that helps yer mate..Guinness Time..Part 11.
