It was called the "Old Dutch" cafe, it had a big windmill on the wall. If you are going out of town past Wavertree Playground it was past the railway bridge on the right. The reason I knew the address was because the owner was a friend of mine and I worked there part time for a while. Don't worry about the mistake, we have all done it at one time or another.:PDT_Aliboronz_11: scousejoan 11-04-2007, 04:50 PM The cafe you mentioned was on Smithdown Rd. Jim opened the Babalou and the Beachcomber. A mate of mine was married to his daughter for a while - very useful for free entry! The Cavern in 1967-8. The Odd Spot, Uglies, Beachcomber, Cheuffeurs etc in the 70's. PS Having now read the full thread I've remembered The Blue Angel (Allan Williams was a mate of my uncle), The Pyramid, and in later years Kirklands and Streets. Favourite was the Odd Spot though, particularly when Neil English, then Terry Molloy ran it - with Chick on the till. Worked the door sometimes when the regular guy, Bobby, was ill. But only because I knew all the regulars by sight - if you weren't known (in the early days) you didn't get in. Once caused a great fuss by turning away Pete Price - Mr Merseyside who couldn't believe a local didn't know him. The fecker was a stranger to me but he got in, ego severely ruffled, by screaming for Chick. Happy days! :PDT_Aliboronz_24: Rodger 11-17-2007, 12:56 PM hi all! if anyone is interested... there is a weekend tribute broadcast on 105MHz FM for the ledgendary Rick Dane and RJN playing all his best music! sounds great to me! so many happy memories!!:034: Steven 11-17-2007, 02:19 PM Wow ! Those clubs bring back some memories. Does anybody remember Sheila from the Gladray :handclap: Please don't remove your post Joan, it all adds to the interest. And Yes, I did go to Dutch Eddy's (The Tudor) in Parly. Jim SH 01-12-2008, 07:34 PM Just joined today and stumbled across this! I used to make regular trips down to Liverpool every weekend and went in all the following at least once or twice..The Wookey Hollow. The Cabin in Wood St (still there). Russells, Tuxedo's and the Continental (Met Debbie Greenwood!) - didn't one of them become Cream? Romeo's and Juliet's (arghh!) Eric's (My favourite, saw The Clash, Siouxsie, Specials and Stranglers amongst others) The She, Ugly's, Coconut Grove and.....The Grafton!  Happy days...:celb (23)::celb (6)::D lindylou 01-12-2008, 09:53 PM Yep, I remember all of them. I went to the Wookey a few times as it was just a 5 min walk from where I lived. let's think - was the Continental the same club as Russells under a new name ?? Then it became Cream ?? I went to the Continental once or twice but it was so long ago I can't think ! Romeo & Juliets was a new name .. the original name when I used to go there was the 'Top Rank' ( then it got changed to 'Baileys' ) Ged 01-12-2008, 09:53 PM Phew, those last few you mention Ste, I can see why you've put Sh :) lindylou 01-12-2008, 09:57 PM Phew, those last few you mention Ste, I can see why you've put Sh :) ... and don't forget the Montrose  :unibrow: Ged 01-12-2008, 10:02 PM Billy and Wally. My mate had his staggie in there :) lindylou 01-12-2008, 10:19 PM The Montrose was ok in it's hey day. Went there once or twice when it was alright - saw Pete Price on there one night doing his stand up comedy/singing routine. The Montrose - like everything else  - went down the nick when all the scalls started frequenting it, and before it closed down it became little more than a pick up joint. Libertarian 01-12-2008, 10:27 PM The Merseyside Academy was at it's height around 92 during the Rave scene I met some fantastic people during that time. j_jo_designs 01-12-2008, 11:41 PM Is there anybody out there who remembers these places from the late 60s / early 70s? :- Unlicensed under 18 dancing above Reeces on a Saturday night, and the same at the Top Rank on a Tuesday night - Third Finger Left Hand - ah, those memories. Luna girl 03-13-2008, 03:08 PM Hello Everyone I was resident singer at the Grafton and Mr Pickwicks in the early seventies. I sang with The Johnny Hilton Showband at the Grafton with another female vocalist Sandra (who would later become my sister-in-law) and also Geoff Nugent - formerly of The Undertakers. I was 16 and had entered a talent competition which went on for about 6 weeks I think, the prize of which was a job singing with the band. I have some great memories of the time. Myself and the other vocalist used to finish at 2 am and then taxi it into town where we could get into any of the clubs for nothing as we were the Grafton singers! I remember going to The Pink Parrot on Duke Street and The Time and Place amongst others which stay'd open for some punters after hours! Well known and famous people used to have parties there after hours when they had done their bit on the Empire/Royal Court Theatres. I then moved on to audition at Mr Pickwicks when it opened. The resident band leader - Charlie Williams asked me to audition having seen me before and so I got the job with The Spencer Williams Sound (very seventies!) and again have some wonderful memories. I was replacing their then girl singer Joan, who was leaving to go and sing at The Top Rank where my sister-in-law had also moved to. Joan went on to later have a little girl whom she called Melanie and who became world famous as Sporty Spice! At Pickwicks, we'd do our sets and then the cabaret would come on about 12 when we would take a trip over to the Shakespeare Theatre over the road and get in for nothing to see some great acts - Tommy Cooper amongst them. I remember this particularly as you couldn't move in the place, it was packed and what an atmosphere! Many of the acts who appeared on Pickwicks later went on to become television stars - Faith Brown, Tom O'Connor, Vince Earl, (one of the Corkhills in Brookside) Dustin Gee - who was Les Dennis's stage partner and did a scarily real impersonation of Robert Mitchum but sadly later died. I remember being really shocked when I walked into the dressing room whilst he was applying blue eyeshadow! Being 16 and very naive I just stood and stared but what a lovely guy - one of the nicest to appear at Pickwicks. He decided the eyeshadow didn't suit him anyway and gave it to me commenting that it was my colour and it was! Mickey Finn was a regular as was also Jackie Hamilton who has now sadly passed away. Jackie who was lovely used to tease me about my boyfriend who worked as a waiter at the Wookey Hollow. The cabaret acts used to 'double up' at the time. They would do a gig on one of the clubs in the Terry Phillips organisation (Wookey, Allinsons, Wispa, Pickwicks - can't remember the others) and then move onto another one later in the evening and do it all again. Anyway, Jackie had done the Wookey earlier in the evening and told me that he'd just seen my guy with a big blonde! I soon learn't to take what he said with a pinch of salt which wasn't hard once he did his bit; he was one of the funniest comics I ever saw. I could go on and on with my memories but I'll leave it there. Others memories: singing at The Gregson's Well with The Spinners prior to my debut at the Grafton; you could get up and do a bit and they were really supportive, I remember Mick and Cliff the most. One of the first gigs we ever did (I say we as I then sang with my friend Pam, we were only 15 but were getting quite well known in Liverpool as a close harmony duo and we WERE good!) was at a club called The Bobbins in Garston. As we were so young, we had to be chaperoned by my mum. Well this agent booked us on there on a sunday afternoon telling us to wear our short outfits which we thought was a bit strange. Well it was a stag do and all men! They used to hold these dos on a Sunday afternoon and we didn't know having never been to one! It was us and the strippers and I remember one in particular leaning against the dressing room wall without a stitch on, smoking a fag and having a conversation with the compere! Naughty agent - we couldn't wait to get out of the place! Well that's enough from me anyway, hope you enjoy my memories Luna Girl cockney-fella 03-13-2008, 03:17 PM Not strictley Liverpool/ Merseyside but the Wigan Casino and for:) the 24 hr party people the Quadrant Park:):) Ged 03-13-2008, 03:24 PM Hiya luna Girl - what a first post. I think the Coconut Grove was another of Terry Philips', he was Mr Universe back then wasn't he? I went to most of those places, Pickwicks (known by the girls as pickadicks in the late 70s) was only over the road from where I lived. Vince Earl was Ron Dixon in Brooky but great memories you have, Pete Price would have been on the Shaky too and I think Stevie Faye who I was with last week was always on with Jackie and Micky. gregs dad 03-13-2008, 06:34 PM Hiya luna Girl - what a first post. Regarding Terry Philips, he came from our street, Reading St. Before he started bodybuilding he looked like the fellow who had sand kicked in his face in the old Charles Atlas adverts, very thin as a youngster. lindylou 03-13-2008, 07:57 PM Great memories Luna. I enjoyed reading that. welcome to the forum. :PDT11 Ged 03-13-2008, 08:03 PM Joe. Always nice to hear about my mum and dads courting place "The Grafton".:handclap: Luna girl 03-23-2008, 07:15 AM Glad you liked my memories - I enjoy them myself! Everything 'felt' so different then, they were nice times! I write songs now with my partner and we recently had some success with one of our songs on a Radio Merseyside songwriting competition. We performed the song and did an interview on the Claire Hamilton Show just before Christmas. Billy Butler was listening in from his studio at the time and said how much he liked the song so we're just getting some new songs together as he's said he'll play them on his show! So I've still got me hand in doing stuff and am hoping for some success as a songwriter though as I said earlier, I don't think you can beat those old times for the feel good factor. Glad you liked my memories best wishes Luna girl Norm NZ 03-23-2008, 10:44 PM Hi! I enjoyed reading your memories of the 70s. and in particular your mention of Geoff Nugent! Geoff's older brother 'Bob', and I were great mates in our early years, and I remember Geoffrey being born, that was many years ago, and I often wonder how he and his brothers got on! I too danced at the Grafton! but that was back in the late 1940's!!! Cheers, and welcome to the forum. :PDT_Aliboronz_24: Chris48 03-23-2008, 11:10 PM Yes I went to the Moonstone too. It is a famous cafe around the Beatles story as that is where they used to eat bacon butties after playing at various venues. Luna girl 03-27-2008, 07:42 PM Yes, Joan (Mel C's mum) is a Tina Turner tribute act and Terry Phillips was Mr Universe! It was Tony Holland on Opportunity Knocks as The Muscle Man as Kevin said. I remember auditioning for that show when I was just 15. I was a bag of nerves and bloody awful! Great memories though. Another one: a few years after I left mr Pickwicks, I was working with a five piece combo doing really nice restaurant/hotel gigs etc - Manchester Piccadilly Hotel and The Excelsior at Manchester Airport I remember well and around this time we were booked onto a hotel in Blackpool to play for the Conservative Conference do and Maggie Thatcher. I wore a blue dress and the lads wore blue shirts for the first set around this time and Maggie came onto the stage to say a bit. She walked up to use my mic and said, 'Oh how lovely, you're all wearing blue!' She obviously thought that we had done so for her! What a night - they knew how to knock it back and that's all I'll say! I seem to remember people saying it was an after hours place where other entertainment artists would go after a gig. I think it was a bit of a Jazz club. Dave H 06-13-2008, 10:13 PM Found this thread by accident and joined site. So many places I had forgot. Even now some of the names are memories just starting to surface. Local clubs for me: Gladray, Ibo, The old Somali (before it moved to the Casa), Chauffers. As a schoolboy went to the last night of the Peppermint Lounge - kopped off with Kirkby girls and had to walk home in the early hours. Late 70s (I think) went with people from work to the club down from the Blue Angel (can't remember the name). We were the only people downstairs - booth seats around tiny dance floor - when entertainment arrived - Jr Walker and band! Played 2 tunes looking bored and wanted to go. We made a fuss and he played another. Fuss again and he woke up. After that, two hours of non-stop music and dance as a 'private' session from a 60s legend. lindylou 06-13-2008, 10:22 PM Some good memories there Dave. :) Wow ! Jr Walker - would have loved to have seen him. I used to hear about the Peppermint Lounge but by the time I was old enough to go clubbing it had changed it's name to Dinos. Ged, I've looked at some of your pictures before, but this is the first time I've seen the full extent of what you've collected. Absolutely stunned by the breadth of your collection. Respect. Kevin Ged 06-20-2008, 12:04 PM Thanks Kevin, it just sort of grew a bit. It was only supposed to be about the tenement block I came from. If you click any of the pics it takes you back to the home page and there's many more pages you can click on thereafter of street scenes and buildings and the like. :) Maggie May 06-20-2008, 04:52 PM Oh my what a fabulous trip down memory lane......The Cabin Club looks a lot posher than it was in my day:unibrow: Some of those old pubs down the dock road also make me quite nostalgic...used to hang out in a few as I trained at the David Lewis Northern....Lordy I sound like we did nothing but go out and drink:PDT_Aliboronz_24:d9dnt have the money to partake in too much but it was a cheap night out and quite often the most wonderful company was to be found in those places...... A wonderful collection..well done....it was also so nice to see some Crosby ones near where I grew up..... I was showing my SAfrican hubby....whose comment was...'you have a lot of pubs in Liverpool...........yeah said I we are a sociable bunch' I see someone also mentioned Erics earlier....now there was a fun place for an up and coming punk rocker as I was a the time:rolleyes: st3v3 06-23-2008, 12:30 AM For any newbies finding this page. Great pub pics ged ive seen the inside of a few from speke to the town to everton good to see again .Are the dogs outside the derby arms the same ones as the liverpool tram pics ? look the same boy was that a long walk they went on ! Ged 06-23-2008, 10:03 AM Ah yes, those dogs are the same and can be found on quite a few of those pics, as Caldy (the golden retriver and her pup - not pub) belonged to the photographer - Joe Devine who must have worn many a shoe out on his treks around pub land. jasper 07-08-2008, 11:45 PM I went to Don Millington's School of Dancing on Walton Road and to another dance school on Bold Street to learn Latin American both in the late 50's. My girl friend dumped me after an unfortunate accident and I started to go to Top Rank dancing at the Rialto Ballroom on Upper Parliament Street. It was a magical place in memory: very plush with an expensive lighting system. Hal Graham was the band leader. The band played mostly Glen Miller covers. I used to jive and win competitions. I couldn't afford to have a regular girl so I used to dance just one dance and move on. It was the best time of my life. I was in my early 20's. There were beauty contests sometimes. There must be thousands of prople with the same memories. I'd love to hear from you. I still dance waltz and quickstep. Ged 07-09-2008, 09:51 AM My mate didn't get a dance all night. I soon found out that his socks were humming so I told him to take them off, nobody would ever know and I bet he'd get a dance. The end of the night comes, the lights go on and there he is, sat in the corner - alone. After learning he'd still not had a dance, even after removing his socks we were flummexed until I asked him where he'd put his socks. 'Here, in my top pocket' he said. drfrasier 07-11-2008, 02:22 AM Talking of the Krazy House, Milos and before that Bradys which used to be Erics, I wonder if anyone remembers a certain DJ from those places that used to throw Opal Fruits and hand them out to people? It was me...i confess.:) I found this today at work here in Denver which is where I ended up at and if anyone remembers me aka Garfield..please let me know. God I miss home. Ged 07-11-2008, 11:13 AM I remember you getting the sack through lack of liquid sales as the sweets you were handing out were made to make your mouth water.
