DALGLISH THANKS FANS

Kenny Dalglish paid tribute to the supporters who turned out in their droves for Replay 86 that raised much needed funds for the Marina Dalglish appeal.
A crowd of over 33,000 turned out to see Liverpool beat Everton 1-0 in a replay of the 1986 FA Cup Final and all proceeds raised from the game will go towards the Marina Dalglish Oncology unit in Fazakerley.

"It was a brilliant day and with nearly 33,000 people turning out it was just fantastic," Dalglish enthused.

"It was such a fabulous day and I would like to thank everybody for coming along and supporting us.

"It is always nice to win but the main thing is we will now have a facility for the people of Merseyside to be proud of."

Strike partner Ian Rush added: "Just walking down the tunnel past the This is Anfield sign brings back fantastic memories of when we used to play here.

"The crowd were absolutely fantastic and just to put on a red shirt again was absolutely superb."

HOUGHTON: REPLAY 86 WAS FANTASTIC

Former Liverpool midfielder Ray Houghton admitted it was fantastic to be back playing at Anfield once again in the Replay 86 match and said the club will always hold a special place in his heart.
Houghton was a member of the 1987-88 team which is widely recognised as one of the best teams ever to grace the Anfield turf, and he played the second half of the match which saw Liverpool beat Everton 1-0.

"It was great to be out there again at Anfield in front of a great crowd and Kenny and Marina are doing fantastic work for the charity and making lots of money which is great to see," Houghton told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"It was a really enjoyable day and it was nice for the kids to see some old faces that they probably wouldn't have seen before, but they can now put names to the faces that their dads would have told them about.

"There was plenty of banter in the dressing room and it was like I had never been away from Liverpool. It was unbelievable and all the players will tell you that the one thing that you miss besides not playing anymore is the changing room.

"There was some good banter on the pitch as well and you saw the rivalry between Steve McMahon and Peter Reid. It was like it used to be and as a spectacle it was a good game when you consider that a lot of the players are now in their 40's and 50's.

"It was nice to play a part in the goal and being at the Kop end was great. Bobby Mimms had made some very good saves but we managed to get the goal even though it looked off-side! We will take that though.

"It was great to see Steve McMahon back from Singapore and Steve Nicol from Boston. That just shows you what playing for Liverpool meant to them and it's a testament to what they think of Kenny as a person coming back to play in this game.

The former Republic of Ireland star also spoke of his love of Liverpool and said it is a time in his life he will always treasure.

"It was always an honour to play for Liverpool and it will always be the home of football for me," he added. "Growing up I had always loved the way Liverpool played with pass and move and the way they used to dismantle teams was just fantastic. To be a part of that great team was just phenomenal.

"We were all itching to play in this game as it could be the last chance we will ever get to play at Anfield in front of 32,000 supporters. It is a special place for every player and it was interesting to see that the changing rooms haven't changed much either.

"I was expecting to find state of the art stuff in there but it was the same as when I came to Liverpool in 1987. In the best part of 20 years it hasn't changed and I think that's great because the club hasn't lost the spirit of years gone by, and hopefully it will stay like this for a long time to come because I think it gives the place an extra edge."

NICOL: IT WAS MAGIC TO PLAY AT ANFIELD AGAIN

For Liverpool legend Steve Nicol playing at Anfield again in the Replay 86 game for Marina Dalglish was special and he admitted after the game it was well worth the long 10 hour trip from Boston.
The former Liverpool star only arrived in England on a flight from the USA on the morning of the match but there were no signs of jet lag and he managed to last the distance and play the full 90 minutes.

"It was absolutely fantastic to be back in a red shirt again and play at Anfield and it was a pleasure to be here," Nicol told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"When I got the call from Kenny asking if I would like to play I just had to get a flight over to Liverpool, and it was magic and we won the game as well which made it even better.

"I arrived in Manchester at 7.45am on the morning of the game but I was okay as I admit I had been in training for this game back in America.

"To play in front of a big crowd again at Anfield and be back amongst the boys was just something special. It was a fantastic crowd for Marina's appeal and it was just a great day. I knew Kenny would give stick as normal but it was worth getting more stick again just to come back!"

Charity cup final is huge success

A 90th-minute winner from John Durnin gave Liverpool a 1-0 win over Everton in Monday's Anfield charity re-match of the 1986 FA Cup final.A crowd just short of 33,000 packed into Anfield to see their heroes take to the field once again to raise funds for the Marina Dalglish Appeal.

Craig Johnston was the only absentee from Liverpool's original side which won the first all-Merseyside cup final 3-1 at Wembley 20 years ago. Steve McMahon took his place. Kevin Ratcliffe captained the Toffees side.

In a match played in great spirit but naturally lacking any pace, Durnin came off the bench to grab a late, late winner in front of the Kop.

What a fantastic 90 minutes!
It was great to see all my childhood heroes on the hallowed turf again. Although they're balder, greyer and quite a bit slower, they've still got it! Genius idea for a good cause.
And we won which is a bonus!! :celb (23):
