wow I remember our house had a bin like that when we moved in in 1960! just shows you how much packaging we use now to think we fill up wheelie bins full.

Funny you should post that up Kev, I took a picture of one to show my grand kids. I will look it up and post it on the forum.

I moved to my present house in 2000, and my previous house in Stalbridge Ave L18 still had the ash bin in the wall. I don't know if the developer left it there or not as there are allygates up now so I don't have access.

In the tennies, we had metal bins/chutes on the landing. They were situated vertically in line with each other on each landing so it was unlucky, very unlucky if you lived on one of the lower landings and jappened to open it just as someone on a higher up landing was putting some rubbish down theirs.

I remember my mam or dad would rake out the ashes from the night before and place them on last night's echo and bundle them up like a chippy tea before taking them to dispose down the bin chute - saved multiple trips of course.

I can remember in the days of coal fires, most household rubbish would be burned on the back of the fire, a consequence of this would be that most of the bins would only contain ash from the fire, hence the name 'ash bins'.

The old time bin men would lug those ash bins the length of the entry to empty in the cart.

In wet weather they must have weighed a ton!

Not like the Rambo's today in their all weather gear and safety boots!
