Allo,
Am looking to get a new telly, either 37 or 42 inch. It's for watching general tv, dvd and stuff from off my pc. I haven't a clue if I should go for an LCD or a plasma.
I don't wanna spend more than 500 really, anyone got any recommendations ?

If you are buying a new telly, I would recommend that you go to Richer Sound in town. The customer servisce and product knowledge is outstanding.
I would by an lcd rather than a plasma, they use less leccy.

Thanks Chris, I was hoping to go to richer sound to buy it.
I'm in the process of that one looks good, but this one looks better, but that one is cheaper etc lol

LCD, as plasma has a life of 5 years before it starts to degrade and needs
changing, which can cost as much as a new TV, so go for a 1080 Hd LCD for
the best in TV's.

I agree with all above! Just bought a new Sony 'Bravia' LCD TV 42 inch' and it's great!!! capable of HDI and also 'Blue Tooth' if you have the correct cables and additional equipment.:PDT11

You might want to check the LCD TV ratings (http://www.smartratings.com/electronics/plasma_and_lcds) and read the reviews of the different brands. I just bought a 32" Sammy and it's awesome. There's not much difference between it and Sony as far as picture quality is concerned.
Have a look on here for recommendations...http://www.avforums.com/

Thanks JMLE,
I joined there the other week and asked the same question. They've come up with a couple of suggestions, so I'm waiting and hoping the prices go down lol
Got to admit that i don't sit and watch much tv at all, and at the mo cash is a bit scarce.
so..... when the wife said she wanted a better telly i got a 28in flat screen (crt) from Ebay for 25quid, this was fine but a bit smaller than expected!
so..... i took a chance on a faulty 32in Sony Triniton for just ?2.73. A google search for the problem found that it just needed re-focusing (red light flashing 5 times), ok the back had to come off, but it just needed a flat skrewdriver to turn a knob inside and hey presto the picture is perfect and the wife is well happy!
If i could afford one of em big slim ones i'd guess it's down to the pixels, but for the time being a ?2.73 32in flat screen will do for now :)

Look at the Teco range of LCD,s
They come with 3 year warranty, I have had a couple
and they are super. 3 scart sockets, at least 2 HDMI
all the usual phono sockets for audio in/out video etc
A lot of well know brands are rebadged Teco,s

Samsung are doing some lovely 42" t.v's now with a nice warranty and they look and work like a dream for less than ?500. you can get one from anywhere ... TJ's has them on offer at most times.

Thanks for that. I've still not got the telly months later lol.
Most of the info I've been reading says that coz I've only got freeview then I should be getting a plasma as it'll give me better picture quality

I have not taken the plunge myself but have been listening out for the pros and cons.
Plasma gets verty hot, THAT wastes leccy (as you call it).
LCDs are good too. I heard that you should tone the factory set brightness down a bit. This you will get used to, but the manufacturer whats you to get that 'zing' so sets it too high in the first place.
The Gadget Show have a web site where they set out the best buys etc. Good luck.

They reckon you'd be lucky to get 5 years out of a Plasma.
I'm happy with my LCD's:PDT11

Smurfy,
Waiting to update our telly - but not until the monster screen I've got gives up the ghost. I'll be going for a plasma when I do, in spite of the issues identified in this thread. I watch a lot of sport, football and cricket, and the plasma screen refreshes more often, so you see movement better. I've been told that the ball can become blurred when watching on an LCD.
Happy to listen if someone knows better!

Stay withh your Analogue for a few years till flat screen technology improves and then get a flatty.
If someone offers you a big analogue TV thats only 12 months old? then take it and wait for the above to happen because that ?500 flatty will come down in price to nearly half its original price.
I've still got my 36" and its picture is as good as a flatty.

You should change your forum. :-)

Large flat screen is similair to Analogue in respect to age the bigger the screen the more likely it will deteriorate in picture quality in five years.

George, gotta pay to use that site.
My current telly doesn't have HDMI and I need that so I can set up my media centre pc so I do need one, but can survive without getting it.
Pablo, I could buy it, but couldn't carry it home from the shop and I ain't paying their delivery charges lol

Retail has gone a bit downhill with the rise in credit. Shops cannot charge more for credit so they are not allowed to give you a discount for cash. Such a pain.
