Right here we go,here's a selection of pictures from the beautiful Formby Point at sunset,I often go there and have a few drinks a stare out to sea and reflect about life,we are lucky enough to have this amazing landscape on our doorsteps and sometimes it seems like you have it all to yourself which is part of the charm of the place,I make regular trips there so you will see more of this place later in the year.:celb (23):

I know it's bad isn't it, I've just replied to the other thread,I wonder if the tanker on that picture is the culprit?

I think it said the spill was from an oil rig.

Here's a couple more pictures to cheer myself up,I'm sure it's only a minor incident but these are the perils of having oil tankers going up and down our coast I'm afraid.

I think it said the spill was from an oil rig.

In that case I know exactly where it happened, you can see the rig from Ainsdale Beach.

Can't find names for those but there is the Allerton Oak, estimated at 1,000 years old, according to legend the ancient `Hundred court' sat beneath its branches:

Per the Liverpool City Council's website (www.liverpool.gov.uk, http://www.liverpool.gov.uk/Images/tcm21-46869.pdf):

"A student project resulted in an informative guide highlighting some of the most interesting tree specimens in the [Calderstones] park."

Now I just have to obtain a copy of the tree guide. The city council website says to visit a library or a One Stop Shop to obtain leaflets and information packs on the park, or alternatively to call Liverpool Direct on 0151 233 3001 to enquire about a park. I'll start there and see if I can find this elusive tree guide....

I wouldn't mind going to Biiirrrrkenhead laaa to see this park.

To be honest it's having a lot of "heritage lottery fund" money spent on it and wont be ready until about 2008 so it's probably worth waiting. The Grand Entrance to the park is worth a visit in itself but it's currently under cover so I'll have to go back there myself.

To be honest it's having a lot of "heritage lottery fund" money spent on it and wont be ready until about 2008 so it's probably worth waiting. The Grand Entrance to the park is worth a visit in itself but it's currently under cover so I'll have to go back there myself.

2008 is to long of a wait.

I love going to Everton Ridge when I am over on the Liverpool side of the water. Words cant describe what I feel when stood ontop of that hill. You feel as if you're ontop of the world; especially as you seem to look down at the Pier Head and the Wirral!

On the Wirral side, I like to go to Vale Park in New Brighton. It is another place where I could spend an eternity just sitting and standing there whilst looking over to the city.

We have so many places in and around the city that provide such "tranquilty". I mean, it's not everwhere where you can decide to jump on a merseyrail trian and go off to New Brighton or Formby is it? It's not everywhere where you can sit on the No60 and look over to the world famous skyline in one direction and then look over to North Wales in another direction is it?

Oh, how lucky we are!

St. Andrew's Scotch Church, Rodney Street - Simply stuning. However, I couldn't take pics of the main part due to it being surrounded by nets and scafolding. This seriously needs restoration.

Before 1793 there was no place of worship for the many Presbyterians who had moved from Scotland to Liverpool. A small group led by Dr. John McCulloch raised enough money to build a kirk on Oldham Street. It was opened in the early summer of 1793 with seating for 820 people. On 6 March 1823 25 members of the congregation led by Dr. John McCulloch left over the appointment of the Reverend John Stewart by Mr. McIver over the Reverend Dr. David Thom. They agreed to build a new church and to offer it to the Reverend Dr. David Thom. He accepted and opened the Music Hall as a temporary chapel on 23 March 1823. On 17 June 1823 the foundation stone of the new church in Rodney Street was laid and it opened on 3 December 1824. The church was closed in 1975, but Sunday services continued in a suitable room in Liverpool Cathedral.

The Scottish church is interesting and should be preserved, I'm not sure but I think it was bought by an out of town doctor who was hoping it would rot and fall down so he could develope the site.
The pyramid shaped tomb has a gambler buried in it sitting at a card table, or that's how the story goes.

The place is a gem, the collums at the entrance are fab and the sooner the place is restored the better!!

Scotsman Will MacKenzie was buried at the Scottish Presbyterian church in Rodney Street. But he is said to haunt the 19th century place of worship after earlier gambling his soul in a game of poker.

I have been on a visit to that

synagogue - it really is beautiful. The chap who showed us around was called Dr Mosse and what he did not know wasn't worth knowing. He was really

entertaining and knowledgeable. He told us the whole history of the synagogue and the community who built it - H Samuels and David Lewis all contributed -

lots of prominent families gave money for it to the built. Interestingly, the architects who desgined it were the same who designed the church further down

Princes Road - I think it's the welsh one they used to call "Toxteth Cathedral". It is gorgeous inside - like a little oasis of calm in the middle of the

busy city.

Went walking round Walton and Bootle

yesterday...

http://img167.imageshack.us/img167/2316/northliverpool200611040db8.jpg
County Road/ Kirkdale Vale This small row has

a variety of buildings which all date from different eras. The building which is set back from the road is likely to be the oldest, closely followed by the

"Halfway House". By my reckoning, we are probably half way to Walton or Spellow (a small hamlet which even boasted a windmill. The site is now long gone and

the area is only marked by Spellow Lane) from the City Centre here which is why there is a pub marking the distance.

http://img172.imageshack.us/img172/4108/northliverpool200611040co1.jpg

County Road, Walton Just some detailing on a row of victorian shops on County

Road.

http://img172.imageshack.us/img172/9463/northliverpool200611040lt9.jpg
Barlow Lane, Kirkdale The Georgian properties are

the earliest buildings around that indicate that this area is much older than it seems. This terrace will have been in open fields at one time. However, the

developing city of Liverpool soon put a end to that with the area developing at an alarming rate. The old villages of Walton, Kirkdale (Chirkdale) and

Spellow became engulfed in the expanding city of Liverpool.

Before we move on, How on earth has one of those properties been allowed to become

dilapidated? It's just making everything look so scruffy. I wouldn't mind living there ( If I could afford

it!)

http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/9704/northliverpool200611040ga1.jpg
Carisbrooke Road, Walton I was left speechless when I

stumbled upon these houses. Such great detailing as been added to these homes as standard. These weren't the olny ones either! There must have been a row of

6 or so.

http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/7040/northliverpool200611040bx0.jpg
Carisbrooke Road, Walton Someone must have felt

in a good mood when these houses were built. Why spend money on such extravagent detailing? After all, it's not as if they are large houses or home to rich

merchants or anything like that.

http://img329.imageshack.us/img329/7818/northliverpool200611040fj2.jpg
Merton Road/Breeze Hill,

Bootle These really were a surprise! I would never have thought that such early examples of housing in Bootle would have survived. The building on the

left is now under ownership by the NHS and so I would imagine that most of the original fittings have long since gone. However, the building on the left is

still a domestic residence and is actually up for sale too!

Hope you liked this selection of images; Still trying to get my Flikr Account sorted out.

Shouldn't be long though!

Carisbrooke Road, Walton Someone must have

felt in a good mood when these houses were built. Why spend money on such extravagent detailing? Afterall, it's not as if they are large houses or home to

rich merchants or anything like that.

May have been built by Jerry Brothers a Liverpool builders. Jerry Brothers were famous for having

houses that looked grand from the front yet cheap at the rear - all show. Sometines it was shoddy at the rear. The term "Jerry Built", used all over the

UK, meant grand at the front cheap at the rear, which eventually became meaning shoddily built.

Many houses in Liverpool and London, only had the

ornamented front walls built and nothing behind. A show house would be finished to view. When a firm order came in the house behind was built. In many

cases this resulted in the front wall of the house not keyed into the rest of the house and ocassionally the wall would move forwards. There are a few of

these houses still around, especially in London. Whe a renovation takes place the Building inspectors insist that heavy angle plates are installed between

the front wall and the abutting walls to keep the house together and prevent a collapse. In the 1800s house collapses were common - no building

regs.

This is a shop on Poulton Road, Wallasey. I took it as

the corn sheaf emblem above the shop shutters really makes the building stand out amongst the rest!

But do look up at the buildings in the city,

and the surrounds. Wigan has some nice buildings as does Bootle and Preston too!

Just catching up on some old posts.
This shop was a

Co-op.
They sold Wheatsheaf bread, hence the carving.
Also Crumpsall Cream Crackers (made in Crumpsall, Manchester).
99 Tea.
Do you remember your

Divi number?
I worked for them in the early 1960s.
This is the same building in 1987.
The carving says: "Established 1891. Peace and Plenty".

Hi Philip

You say, "They

sold Wheatsheaf bread, hence the carving." But isn't it the other way around -- that the wheatsheaf was the symbol of the Co-operative Wholesale Society

(CWS)? Yes CWS made Wheatsheaf Bread and it had the CWS on it which was the wheatsheaf. The symbol appeared on banners and on other artifacts of the

Co-operative movement.

Hello Chris.

I don't know why I missed your reply.
Yes, I did know about the Wheatsheaf being the symbol of the Co-op, but I was just giving out a little check-list of the Co-op in case people remembered various things, and not a history, so perhaps that bit came out wrong.

So sorry.

I remember my dad telling me he and his cousin threw a sickie at Laird's one sunny morning and went rowing on the lake all day, even fell asleep in the sun and his eyelids near stuck. Next morning there were sombre looks from all the management as they tried to explain their fantastic sun tans away.

A friend on another forum posted this item about a marriage between Guinness and Marmite brought about through Unilever which evoked memories for me of Lever Brothers, Port Sunlight, and Pears Soap. . .
I can hear the bellies growling from here.....

My friend said:

Food Giant Unilever Takes Marmite Into Uncharted Territory

http://retrothing.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/guinnessmarmite.jpg
I admit an almost unhealthy love of both Guinness beer and Marmite yeast spread. I know it's probably the result of a horrible genetic mutation, but humour me anyway. The drunkards at Guinness have teamed up with the industrial food elves at Unilever to brew up a memorable batch of limited edition Guinness Marmite, featuring 30% Guinness yeast extract. The result is apparently less salty than Marmite and less hangovery than gallons of grog. Only 300,000 limited edition jars will be foisted on an unsuspecting British public sold at around £2.49 each. Alas, it's alcohol free. I look forward to the eventual release of Heinz Baked Bean Marmite with giddy anticipation.

[via Giles "there's Marmite in my veins" Perkins at onSuper8.org (http://homepage.mac.com/onsuper8/)]

I replied:

This unlikely (or likely!) combination is made even more interesting to me because "Unilever" has evolved from Liver Brothers and Lord Leverhulme, who was responsible for the planned village of Port Sunlight on the Mersey near Liverpool at the time of the Whitechapel murders and Pears Soap and the image of "Bubbles" another period connection, painted by Pre-Raphaelite artist Sir John Everett Millais in 1886:

Millais' classic painting (http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/about/news/newsarticle.asp?id=544&venue=0) is now at Lady Lever Art Gallery in Port Sunlight.
