Found this in a Clarence Dock rest room yesterday.
Had one of these in our house "when I were lad".Cast iron kettle on the hob always on the boil, topped up every now and when it ran low with evaporation,Sunday dinner cooked in the oven, with the teatime scones, and in the winter evenings draw plates taken out, covered with a cloth and used
as bedwarmers all with one fire

Joe, Clarence Dock is filled in. :)
Alright I`ll give it it`s full title Clarence Graving Docks which are only filled in with water. See Dock gates thread.

These are old railway lines which were used to feed the Clarence power station. The Clarence dock was eventually used to store coal in as it was discharged from trains and when the power station was demolished they filled the dock in with the rubble.

That pic of the grate brought some memories back, Joe,most of all your
mention of covering the hot oven shelves with old pieces of blanket to heat the beds in the winter. It was another world!

I would love a walk around this area, especially around the clock. Is it easy to get in?

It isn`t now Kev since Peel Holdings took it over. The main entrace to the Waterloo Dock was always left open. I fished the Mersey there for many years up to last year, even while they were doing the canal link. They lock the gates now but some days they are left open so I just meander in and take some pics. I have only been approached once in the Clarence by security who asked me if I had finished taking my pics as they were locking up for the day and kindly offered me a lift to the entrance.

Clarence dock area is playing host to a fairground for the next few weeks they arrived today.
This would make a nice park with some landscaping and canal walks instead of some of those ugly towers

It would make a nice dock if they dug it out. Clarence Dock is still there complete with granite quays - have a look. It is historic as 1.4 million starving Irish went through it.
Then buildings fitting in with the Tobacco warehouse/Albert Dock could be built around it. What works at Albert will work there. It is probably too obvious for them.

Its a shame they cant leave them gates open all the time, im sure people use to fish there at night as well. I've been down there late on getting shots looking across the mersey toward Wallasey Town Hall..etc was a decent place to go

Old workshop by Victoria tower,I used to fish in the Mersey from in front of this, inside was a magnificent wooden work bench with legs about 9 inches thick. Might still be there, as there was no way of getting it through the door.

Hi Joe , Magnificent pics as usual , That is not an old workshop by the Victoria Tower , it is the Salisbury Dock-masters Office ,The Dock Master had his quarters upstairs & the bench you refer to was the office desk ! they were built to last in those days . Ron P.S someone mentioned access for fishing , I found as an office boy working for the Harbour Masters Dept. , there was a clause written into the original construction of the Docks ,which were built onto the river that the public who previously had access to the river would not be restricted ,for fishing etc. & you could always obtain a pass (for the bobby on the Gate) to fish from the wall ,which I had, I wonder if the present owners of docklands are aware of this ?. . The Cockle-Hole recess ,South of Albert Dk was built for fishing boats & was tidal . I had a registered fishing boat & was never refused free entry to the docks . Ron

Hi Ron
the bench that I used to see in there while I was fishing from there had a very large vice attached to it.
I am only going back about 5 years ago.
My brother kept his boat,a nobby called the Comrade, in the "cockle hole". I had a pass for fishing, but since the terrorist threat it was withdrawn. You can apply now but it must be a party of a bonafide angling club.I think the old law was where you could walk on the river front you could fish.
I had a pass many years ago to take photos in the docks when I was a member of the Litherland camera club.

I remember making my way along the dock front, about 20 yrs ago, from Seaforth radar station,to the Pier head, and didn't see a soul, but for a couple of guy's fishing, who told me how much cleaner the river was becoming! That seems to have been stopped now,and the access to make the same trip, just isn't there, with all the redevelopment, etc!

Hi Joe , I had a great mate , Alex Martinnsen (an Estonian) a well known character on the waterfront as mate on the 'Skirmisher & LHC Deltic' ? (took rubbish out to sea) , he had a nobby the'Lavinia' which he kept alongside mine in Salisbury Dk & we both went down to the Cockle-Hole to spend the night there so Alex could do a repair on his propellor when the tide went out , I recall 2 other nobbys moored there but cant recall their names & there was another professional fisher who I was told had a fish shop . wonderful days ! Thanks for the picture. That building is a lot more fancy than the BAT building I worked in one summer. I don't remember a separate office building for BAT.
Is the building still in use as an office for Ogdens? Is Ogdens even still around as a company?

Pipe tobacco and Snuff is no longer produced at the Boundary Lane Everton factory, and I can't tell you what goes on at the office block.
I took the photo recently because rumour had it that it was coming down. It is a listed building but in Liverpool that doesn't mean a thing to the Council. As we have witnessed over the years.

Is there a thread that lists all the buildings/structures of special interest or architecture i.e. Sailors Home, Floating Roadway, etc. that have been pulled down?
