View Full Version : Liverpool Cranes
THE two men who spearheaded Liverpool's bid to win Capital of Culture today said: "We hope the city is still being rebuilt in 2008".
Council chief executive Sir David Henshaw, and former council leader Mike Storey - who now has the portfolio for special projects including culture - claimed a crane-filled skyline was good news for the city.
Speaking today in response to criticism that many parts of the city will still resemble a building site in Capital of Culture year in 2008, Sir David said: "You cannot stop a growing and developing city."
He told the council's executive board: "There is an opportunity to use these developments. Building work shows we are a vibrant city.
"Melbourne has used its building sites for salsa dancing and we can do the same in Liverpool."
Meanwhile, former council leader Mike Storey said he hopes that when 2008 arrives there will still be work in progress.
He added: "We want to see cranes on the skyline.
"When people visit a European city they do not see it in pristine condition.
"I would be concerned if in 2008 we said "this is it" and there was no building going on and no cranes in sight.
"In 2008, the city will be continuing to develop towards 2020......
What do u think? Are cranes a good sign?
A further 22 tower cranes are set to join the 20 currently punctuating the Liverpool skyline, with only London and Dublin beating the count. City leaders are predicting one of the most exciting years in decades as a number of long-awaited projects get underway. Work on schemes such as Grosvenor’s giant Paradise Street development, which accounts for 10 cranes, has sucked in thousands of construction workers, including a small army of Poles.
London and Dublin - Both capital cities too :celb (6):
Photees and comments please :celb (23): You can't help but notice them as you drive past can you?

32 Remember this is just for tower cranes there are well more than this in reality.:)
As much as I love the activity down town I'll be glad when we start to make serious in roads with all the new developments and the progress becomes more apparent,Liverpool at the moment is a building site and when the wraps come off I'll be more confident for tourists to see it.
bustcapl 12-04-2006, 03:12 PM not counting anymore Paul?
Paul D 12-04-2006, 04:01 PM I rarely go into town now.

ChrisGeorge 02-27-2007, 02:04 PM Hi Steve
Find pic, Steve. I am also enjoying looking at your virtual tour of Chester. Excellent work. :handclap:

marky 03-29-2007, 12:55 PM Just noticed the recently erected one by the Coburg pub (Sefton St/Parliament St). Grafton St/Horsfall St. has a tower crane, I don't remember the specific name of the development.
The crane on the Liverpool One site that was above the new Debenhams came down a few days ago, did you count that one out Paul?
A rare bit of activity this afternoon on the L1 site: one of the tower cranes was dismantling its neighbour. Dunno if they're all coming down. What's happening here, has the L1 scheme been scrapped?
http://www.l1ve.com/ is the official website of the L1 development. There's also a thread on Yo! too: Click here (http://www.yoliverpool.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1062)....

Don't know, but the crane's are on lease and probably costing money. I'm guessing whoever owns them wanted them back...

At the moment it's not looking good is it? They must cost brewsters keeping them there idle though.
scouserdave 04-04-2007, 06:01 PM Paul and others,
I know some of you don't get downtown much, but neither do the ladies on SSC which is where you get most of your info from. Most of them haven't a clue.
Ignore them. Just a piece of advice:PDT_Aliboronz_11:
Paul D 04-04-2007, 07:18 PM Okay Dave,so is there any truth in that?

I'd been wondering that for some time. I can't remember last time I saw them working there, must be about 12 months now, and 4 cranes sat there doing nothing must be costing someone money. As of lunchtime today when I went out, two of them had gone, and it looked like they were getting a third one ready for dismantling.
snappel 04-05-2007, 08:38 AM Yes, within a few more days I'll expect they'll on be gone. Logical, I suppose, but a shame as I was planning to go back there...

I know this is a city centre crane count but have you seen the ones at Whiston Hospital? There must be about 6! :PDT_Xtremez_42:
Paul D 04-10-2007, 11:07 AM It's great that regeneration is taking place all over now, there are a lot of projects outside of the city centre just waiting to start.:PDT11

Cheers Paul, I was listening to Kev Seed the other day and he said that the cranes are colour coded depending on where abouts they are in town, ie PSD all white. Is there any truth in this?

Maybe part of it are but they're definitely different colours, see above.:)
snappel 04-29-2007, 10:03 PM I doubt it. I'd have thought it's down to whichever crane hire company is used. PSD has white, red, green and blue cranes on it. I expect most sites only use one hire company, and so probably have the same colour cranes. As Paradise St is broken down into sub-sites, it's possible that different bits use different companies.
snappel 05-06-2007, 03:35 PM One more Iliad one on Duke Street, plus at least two new ones on Paradise Street.
PhilipG 05-06-2007, 04:19 PM There's one just gone up at Park Road, on the Clarendon Park development (which is mostly finished), opposite Somerfield.
I'll put a photo in the Toxteth thread.
marky 05-08-2007, 11:16 AM I don't know if this is on the list...it's over the road from the University in Duckinfield Street (rear of Catholic Cathedral). This is one of the very few sites where you can see what's going on...until they put up hoardings down this street.
Edit: I checked the hoardings and this is already on the list...arts and design building for the university.

Klaatu 05-29-2007, 09:42 AM Has anyone taken any pics from Hannover street ?...It looks like a "forest" of cranes from there.
Kev's 4th pic above is from Hannover st, looking past the new BBC Radio Merseyside building. Great pics Kev.
Klaatu 05-29-2007, 10:39 AM Of course I recognise it now...cheers.
I think they look more impressive from the ground though in Hannover street...makes you feel kind of small.
That's the same reason I took the pics, its a surreal experience walking in that part of town.
phredd 05-29-2007, 11:56 AM Kev
In pic 2 and the last pic (the same crane I think) I notice both the Canadian Flag and the French Flag fly on it.
Do you know the reason for that ?
Just curious :slywink:
Phredd
Don't tell me Celine Dion's driving it?
taffy 06-10-2007, 01:22 PM As viewed from the Mersey.
In the last couple of weeks, one of the big white cranes from Paradise Street was taken out - it was roughly where the old bus station/car park was; and another one has gone up, near Cesar Pelli's tower. By the look of it I don't think it'll be there for long though, its base isn't buried in the ground like the rest.
jon_hall 06-26-2007, 07:46 PM Can't remember when the one at St Pauls went, but not seen the mobile one they had lately either.
marky 06-26-2007, 10:53 PM Grafton Street/Horsfall Street...Tower Crane removed (site is almost finished).
University Art and Design building (rear of Catholic Cathedral), has another Tower Crane (making a total of two, now)
PhilipG 07-01-2007, 12:02 PM 29 June 2007.
From New Ferry it's clear to see that nothing of any height has yet been built.
In fact (in this shot) the only tall buildings are structures from the 1960s.
(Apart from the Law Courts and the Municipal's tower.)

marky 08-21-2007, 01:00 PM A crane was being erected at the New Liverpool Life Museum site, this morning.
...and one of the white cranes has been removed from Paradise Street, roughly where the Moat House Hotel used to be. I can't see the other ones in the same area (two of them left) being around for much longer.
