Lets kick this one off in style!! Why not? Considering there's a huge party planned for Liverpool's Historic Hope Street (http://www.yoliverpool.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5417), can we find as much info as poss on Liverpool's Cultural Quarter?

Delighted to see everyone is so interested in Hope Street!

As the person who is currently trying to organise the Hope Street Party on Sunday 11 June (HOPES, with Liverpool Vision and the City Council, and NWDA) I hope there will be lots of ideas for the day, and that you will all come and support the event.

Look forward to hearing from you. Please pass the word as the plans get firmed up.

Thanks and best
Hilary (Hon Chair of HOPES: The Hope Street Association - website as in previous posting)

Welcome to the forum Hilary. I love the Hope st area. There is so much going on there and there has always been a unique feel to the place.

It's just occurred to me that people may also be interested in the debate which is beginning to develop on www.hilaryburrage.com about Liverpool's Parks etc. I'd be particularly interested to read any comments about the Wavertree Botanical Gardens, which are hugely historiical and also sadly neglected.

Maybe people have views and news on other parks in Liverpool / Merseyside, too?

Liverpool has potentially wonderful parks, but I guess we all have to make our views known if they are to reach their potential in the way that parks in some other cities have.

Thanks again,
Hilary

(I think the Liverpool Parks people are interested to see what is suggesetd.)

No, not me. I think Hilary is though!

Next year? We'll see; I think everyone wants to but it'll inevitably grow and it needs some funding to manage a wider road closure and staffing for a bigger zone. Numbers today seemed about right for what was on offer; I hear around 10,000 from those who know.

TEN thousand people flocked to the Hope Street Festival yesterday to celebrate the regeneration of one of the city's most iconic addresses.

Fine food and drink, faith, and the arts all collaborated for what organisers called "a great community festival".

"Everyone has done their own thing and brought something to the party," said Simon Glinn, executive director of the Philharmonic Hall.

"It has been a big celebratory event and has been a really successful day, attracting more people than we have expected."

Professional estimates for Sunday stated that between 8,000 and 10,000 visited Hope Street for the festival.

Mr Glinn said: "It's the start of the cultural season and the Phil traditionally has an open day to launch the cultural programme for the next nine or 10 months - so this is quite a European model and it is something we can build on.

"It is a great community festival." There was a series of free performances at the Philharmonic Hall and the chance for classical music lovers to put questions to the RLPO's new conductor, Vasily Petrenko.

During the 30-minute session, Mr Petrenko, who runs his own orchestra in his home town of St Petersburg, revealed that he "definitely" wants to see his two orchestras collaborating.

He added: "That would be one of my biggest honours, to bring the orchestra to St Petersburg and show the orchestra members the city."

He also said he was in talks with the Welsh National Opera to bring more performances to Liverpool.

"You have wonderful theatres. It is a shame not to use them," he said.

Mr Petrenko led the orchestra for three performances of extracts from Swan Lake and Stravinsky's Suite from The Firebird.

A group of local writers met at the Everyman to discuss their plays with the public and celebrate the opening of a new coffee shop and bookshop in the theatre's foyer.

Literary manager Suzanne Bell said: "It has been a fantastic day for us and we've had a great response from people coming in, asking questions and buying texts."

Paul Askew, head chef at the London Carriage Works, said: "The Hope Street Festival has grown each year to become bigger and better.

"The idea now is to build it up through 2007 and 2008 and really move it forward. Our dream is to make it more recognisable and make it a tourist attraction in its own right.

"I think today has been really encouraging and we're all absolutely delighted with the turnout. The farmers' market and cookery demonstrations really added a lot."

There was also performances and services at the Metropolitan Cathedral, as well as a day of live music at the Hope Street Hotel and the Everyman Bistro.

"This festival was something that was done with no additional resources," said Mr Glinn.

"If we are going to build it up we are going to have to see how we can fund it next year."

Farmers' market to be staged every month in wake of festival success

IT WAS announced during the Hope Street Festival that the farmers' market that was part of the event will become a monthly occurrence.

The market - which saw some traders completely sell out of produce not even halfway through the day - will take place on the third Sunday of every month.

The market will sell a range of fresh local produce, from meats and cheeses to fruit and vegetables. Paul Askew, head chef at the London Carriage Works, said it was great news for the market and for Hope Street.

He added: "The farmers' market has been moved around and tried in different places, but Hope Street is the place that really works.

"I think it will bring the event significantly more exposure and it is a really exciting thing to have." source (http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/0100news/0100regionalnews/tm_objectid=17768632%26method=full%26siteid=50061% 26headline=thousands%2dcelebrate%2dthe%2drebirth%2 dof%2dhope%2dstreet-name_page.html)...

Hi again

If anyone's interested, I've tried to outline the history of the Hope Street Festivals on my

blog:

and

Would be delighted if anyone wants to add their own

recollections and memories about all this as Comments, at the end of what I've written. I'm sure some of you will have been at the Queen's 1977 visit,

or to one of the earlier current annual festivals?

Look forward to hearing from you, thanks

We used to go in the Crack in Rice st. The Caledonian and the Blackburn, and of course the Philharmonic pub. What was the name of the pub that was later called Peter Kavanaghs ? - originally it wasn't called that, it had another name. Was it the Grapes?? It's on Egerton st.

Wonder why that school ever closed ?? It was a good school in those days.

I'm told (by regulars in Ye Cracke) that Kavanaghs was the Grapes and it was renamed by its landlord John Meakin who later ran the Baltic fleet. John was an odd one and after getting a court case dismissed rode down Dale st. from dressed as Napoleon standing in a horse and trap brandishing a broadsword and anouncing to all and sundry that justice had been served. I hope this story is true! John was also known as a poet but other than an ode to Walton prison I don't know any of his stuff. John died last year aged in his 60s.

I think they shut the school because Edwina Curry went there

A LIVERPOOL publican, cleared of indecent assault, says he plans to seek damages for wrongful arrest.

John Meakin galloped away from the city magistrates' court on a friend's horse, Midnight, explaining that the alleged offence had "started as a bit of horseplay".

Mr. Meakin (39), proprietor of the dockside Baltic Fleet pub, was alleged to have bitten the bottom of customer Joyce Emmanuel (22), tried to kiss her and put his hand down her pants and the front of her T-shirt.

Bowler-hatted Mr. Meakin, wearing an overcoat over his pin-striped suit and carrying a silver topped cane, said after the case that he intended to seek civil damages for wrongful arrest and detention.

He said he had a reputation for doing stupid things and had been known to take women down the pub cellar.

He claimed Miss Emmanuel asked him to take her to the cellar and he called the police after her boyfriend started to cause trouble.

Committal proceedings were to have taken place at the magistrates court but Mr. Keith Mountain, prosecuting, asked for Mr. Meakin to be discharged because of insufficient evidence.

Defence solicitor Mr.Paul Rooney who asked for reporting restrictions to be lifted, expressed surprise that the matter had gone as high as the Chief Constable. The complainant had tried to withdraw her allegation shortly after making it in July.

Mr. Meakin's business had been badly affected and he had been called names like "sexual pervert". He spent five and a half hours in police custody and intended to take civil action.

Mr. Mountain said the police did not bring the case negligently, spitefully or maliciously. No order for costs was made against them.

After the hearing Miss Emmanuel, girlfriend and secretary of solicitor and Wirral Councillor Alan Maddox, said a smear campaign had been conducted against her because of their relationship. "I went to the pub with my boyfiend and some friends. I have heard a lot about the cellar and Meakin said he would take me down."

EIGHT centuries of Liverpool’s history will be marked in a special festival concert this summer.

The Hope Street Association (Hopes) has won culture funding to put on the Hotfoot Hope Street Festival event in July.

The centrepiece of the weekend will be a special concert by musicians from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra at the Philharmonic Hall on Sunday, July 22.

And organisers are promising a musical celebration of Liverpool’s landmark anniversary.

Hilary Burrage, of Hopes, said: “The event is about celebrating the history of the city and the concert programme will reflect that.

“We’re currently developing a series of activities around it and we’re hoping to get some more sponsorship to put on a good programme.

“Hope Street is one of the oldest and most interesting areas of the city. There used to be a windmill here.

“The event will not just celebrate the 800th birthday, but also 30 years of the Hope Street Festival.”

The first Hope Street Festival was organised in 1977 for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. Among the backers were Stephen Gray OBE and Andrew Burn, then managers at the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society, as well as the late Adrian Henri.

It included a pageant of 17,000 people – including many schoolchildren – along the length of Hope Street.

And while the 2007 festival event may not be as ambitious, organisers are calling on people who took part in that jubilee event to also get involved in the 800th birthday celebration.

Ms Burrage said: “We want as many people as possible involved in those early festivals to come this year. I myself was a new teacher in 1977 and was asked to create 30 sheep costumes for children.”

A second festival weekend has sprung up in September, and this year the event – which includes food stalls and entertainment – will be on Sunday, September 16.

Anyone who can offer sponsorship for the July 22 event, or who wants to get involved, should e-mail hope.street@btconnect.com

This has always been a good and well attended event in the past. It includes an open day at the Phil, the usual farmers market and in the past there has included a Craft fair in Blackburne House. There will be a display of E Chambre Hardman's photographs of the area in the Phil foyer.
