Good Morning,
Many years ago, in Connecticut, I met a young Scouser named Anne Berry. She's from Fazakerley. She is, and was, an absolute stunner and, to quote the Italians, I was struck by the thunderbolt. It took me all of three months to convince her to marry me and remain in America.
Shortly after our wedding, we moved to California, and have lived here since then. As time passed, we were blessed with four kids -- three boys and, finally, I got my daughter -- who is a clone of my wife -- same temperament, same bossy attitude (I'm told by Scouser men that all Scouser wives are really bossy).
Over the years, we visited Liverpool on an almost yearly basis, or had Anne's Mum visit us. Anne, and her family, lived in Gribble Road, Fazakerley. Several years back, Anne's Mum decided she needed a little help so she moved to Stonedale Lodge. She passed away in March, 2005 and we all miss her --- she was my pal . During the several years she lived at Stonedale, she was pampered and treated like royalty by the staff, especially by Beryl and Linda.
When we visit Liverpool, our special hangouts are; The Rat and Parrot in Queens Square, ASK (Italian restaurant) in Queens Square, Tess Riley's for Sunday Roast, The Farmer's Arms in the Vale, The Copplehouse in Fazakerley, and, of course, the Royal British Legion in Fazakerley. Our favorite hotel is the Feathers in Mount Pleasant, city centre --- the manager, Marie, and Bernie, treat us like we are members of their families.
I'd like all of you to know that Liverpool holds a very special place in my heart. Since we began visiting, many years ago, the people we have met, and become friends with, have always treated us like long lost family. We thoroughly enjoy our visits to your incredible city and have genuine affection for Scousers.
I am a retired Sergeant with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. During my time with the Sheriff's Department, I patrolled the streets of East Los Angeles and Watts, worked a variety of investigation jobs, and thoroughly enjoyed my job in spite of many injuries and broken bones. Shortly after my retirement, we moved to the foothills of northern California and have loved living here.
Although I am a Connecticut Yank, I would like you to know that I also consider myself an honorary Scouser.
We were in town when Liverpool was named the European Capital of Culture, 2008. I think I probably cheered louder than anyone else. We were just leaving the Rat and Parrot when an airplane flew overhead displaying a banner saying, "We Did It". We will definitely visit Liverpool during this celebration.
I'd like to thank all of the Scousers who make us so welcome when we visit.
I think that's enough for now.
Take care -- we hope to visit your fair city again during Sept., 2006.
