Those are great pictures and I wonder if you have any more?
In fact if anyone has any photos showing typical trains running into or out of Liverpool Exchange in the 1950s/1960s, I would love to see them.
While I'm here I might as well ask a couple of questions I have asked elsewhere but without much success in terms of detailed replies:
Does anyone have photos (or better still a scale drawing) of the 70ft Cowans Sheldon turntable that was at Bankhall Engine Shed?
Does anyone have any photos showing the third rail electric trackwork of the Liverpool - Southport/Ormskirk system in the 1950s/1960s? As far as I can tell the track use standard 8ft 6ins sleepers offset to one side to mount the conductor rails. I would love confirmation that this was the case. Then the question is what happened where the conductor rails overlapped, i.e. where the conductor rail was swapped from one side of the track to the other? Were extra long sleepers used so both conductor rails could be mounted on the same (longer sleeper) or what? If anyone can answer that question, it will ensure that my model of the area around Kirkdale Carriage Sidings and Station is as accurate as possible!
Thanks in anticipation.

Can any of the railway enthusiasts tell me why the station in Hornby rd, Walton is called Preston rd ??
The station is called Rice lane too. So I presume Preston rd is the old name for it ?? .. but why was it called Preston rd when there is no road of that name around there?
Just curious about the name.

Rice lane sta used to be called Preston rd because it's on the main (A59) Liverpool to Preston road. I think that section of road was to be called Preston rd but was changed after the sta opened. Walton station has always been called that. Don't forget Walton on the hill station that used to be where the flyover is now.

Walton was originally Walton Junction station. This was were the four track section from Liverpool Exchange ended, with double tracks going to Wigan and Preston. This station was also one of two, to be gaslit into the 1970's (on an electrified line!).

Great concept:trouble starts when only two tills are open and one of them is dealing with an enquiry from an old-dear who is a little confused.I experienced this at Southport a month ago-missed two trains whilst waiting in the queue !

How is that any different to how it used to be? I don't see how the concept makes any difference to that?

If I remember correctly,at Southport,there was previously a seperate enquiry-office.

Ah yes, quite right :) I suspect that was long gone before the M to Go opened though?
Of course there was no separate enquiry desk at Liverpool Central.
