Construction Liverpool Central

I have often wondered if the line from Central towards Hunts Cross was used to evacuate spoil from the contruction of the loop and associated works.
If not,the line was effectively moth-balled until the openning of the link in 1978.

Did all freight-traffic cease with the closure of Brunswick in 1971?I remember a siding(perhaps at Cressington)equipped for oil-tankers,still in situ when the newly electrified line to Garston openned in 1978.

I can remember playing as a kid around the Woody area all the time and this cutting shown on the attached map was our boundary, we never went further than that. I don't think it was fenced off from the Northern line either at the time.

The oil siding was between the former Otterspool Station and St. Michaels Station on the river side of the line. I think it was roughly where Hythedale Close is now.

The cutting in Kev's picture was the former Cressington Junction where the line which ran down to Garston Docks and Church Road Stations diverged from the main line.

Sorry, I meant Garston Dock Station, which was behind the Garston Hotel next to the Level Crossing on Dock Road.

I think the sidings were called Fulwood, I certainly don't remember them being used after the line was re-opened in 1978 but could be wrong

When I was a lad and the family moved away from south Liverpool. I had a mate who had the job of opening the gates for the trains to come through behind the Garston hotel. He had a little shed with a stove and we would drink tea and chat. He only had to open the gates about twice a night. I would always volunteer to go out and do it for him. It was a good little number and after rolling out of Johns night spot with out my cab fare it came in handy.:034:

That was Otterspool Goods Loop, still in use until the line closed in 1973. Controlled by Otterspool Signal Box which was at the Garston end of the station just after the bridge over Otterspool park.

Take a look at Nick Catfords 'Disused Stations site, and find Garston Dock station. The OS map he uses showing the station shows the link quite clearly.
