US President-elect Barack Obama has nominated two leading global warming specialists for key science posts in his administration.

Harvard physicist John Holdren will be Mr Obama's scientific adviser while marine biologist Jane Lubchenco will head the US oceanic research body.

Both have advocated greater government action on climate change. Source BBC

This is a welcome development and signals real change in American policy. The Bush administration has been insensitive to issues such as global warming now American policy can become progressive and lead the way to make the world cleaner and safer. :handclap:

Global warming and Global cooling has been with us a long time, billions of years since the planet was formed.
10,000 years ago where my house is, it was under 200 feet of ice, now there is none. The glaciers came and went without any human help.
The biggest threat is the speed up of global warming. We cannot stop it, but it can be slowed down.
The big one is not my little car and the amount of tax that Brown and Darling can impose upon it, but to stop the destruction of the rain forests.
Brazil is cutting and burning millions of square miles of rain forests annually. North Argentina has completely wiped out the rain forest, it cannot be replaced, gone for ever. the Congo, Nigeria and others in Africa, cut and burned, Malaysia, Indonesia, all cut down and burned, Borneo and Sumatra have been decimated.
No one is stopping these vandals destroying our planet, only , "Let us tax my little car" .
The rain forests of the world are the lungs of the planet, they absorb carbon and give out oxygen. When they are gone there will be a planet full of carbon and no oxygen. The Politicians are as thick as the timber that is being cut down. They know nothing. But pressure must be put upon them to stop the destruction of our Forests, and the import of timber from those countries.
I have been up the Amazon, the Congo and all over Indonesia and Malasia and seen the destruction, no one is stopping them, they are all making millions out of our destruction. It is time the people of the world gets wise to the gangsters of the world.
The latest DAFT idea the greens thought up was to make fuels out of palm oils instead of carbon fuels crude oil. They have cut and burned the rain fiorests and planted palm oil trees, that destroyed the wild life, such the orang utang, birds and other wild life. I spent some time with the Dyaks in Borneo, their once sacred lands and way of life has been destroyed due to these freaks destroying their forests to plant these bio fuel trees. They are the real criminals. the stupid greens.
The rain forests have all but gone now, they have been cut down and burned to grow palm oil trees for bio fuels. This has killed off most of the wildlife including the `wild man of Borneo`, the Orang Utang, and the Dayaks displaced and their way of life destroyed. This can never ever be replaced, it has gone forever. All in the pursuit of profits and these mad people who think growing bio fuels will save the world when they are the very people who are destroying it

Since the 1970s, the Dayak have been baffled by the existence of mining projects, logging by forest concessionaires, plantations and industrial timber estates. Socio-economic expert Mubyarto said the presence of the giant projects in Kalimantan and Sabah changed the Dayak?s source of wealth.
The rattan monopoly has impoverished the Dayak in East and Central Kalimantan. The gold mining in Ampalit (Central Kalimantan), coal mining in East Kalimantan and gold mining in Monterado (West Kalimantan) have caused the locals to suffer. The same thing has happened to the Dayak Bentian, Dayak Pawan-Keriau and Empurang. They struggle against the plantations, which are partly financed with foreign loans. They are forced to give their land to the investors. After the land transfer, all the plants, all the sacred places and cemeteries were demolished and replaced by palm oil trees. They are forced to pay the investors for the privilege of living on their own land in installments.
The project ruins the environment, as well as the social, cultural and political patterns. They have marginalized the sovereignty and dignity of the Dayak over the Land and natural resources.
It is time the people of the world got wise to themselves and found the real cause of global warming

Captain Cong ,I read your post with mounting trepidation. The "little" people of this world seem powerless to prevent the destruction of the flora and fauna of our planet. This little world when viewed from space is a thing of beauty,no borders can be seen,it is perfect in form and in a cosmos that contains so many dead planets ,it shines like a beacon of hope. The only wrong thing on earth is mankind. In the 4.5 billion years of it's existence there has never been a creature so foul as us,we pollute it and destroy our fellow inhabitants,we are responsible for the extinction of thousands of species. What we do to each other pales in comparison as to what we do to the animal and plant life of the world. What complex creatures we humans are, capable of so many different things, great works of art, music and literature, philosophies that enhance humanity;death camps, weapons of mass destruction and hateful despotism, xenophobia, fascism ,bigotry.
Is the end of days nigh,do we love our world enough to want to change it ?
Apathy rules ; as an ex political activist I found that out a long time ago. Most people are not interested in things that they think have nothing to do with them. "What has my mahogany dining suite got to do with global warming?" They cannot associate that nice looking bit of furniture with the deforestation of our world. And by ours I mean all of the creatures that have it as a home. I wonder how it will before the world gets rid of us?

Oh and by the way,Merry Christmas
