I don't find it eerie Brian. I see it as a "Figurehead" ( which on large ships, reflects or represents the name of the ship)..could take on any form..

On this little fishermans dingy.. I see it as representing just that.. As the head of his childs doll .. Maybe, only wishing he had a large ship and a figurehead of carved beauty....Yet, only having this to reflect his dreams..

My grandparents were born and raised in Portugal...In fact, they emmigrated on those large ships in the early 1900's to America.. They are very colorful people...

A lot of the people that lived and worked by the sea in those ports, were, and are poor... That is what I see in his little boats figurehead.. Sad it couldn't be a lovely carved one.. His paintings on his boat were lovely and bright. so, very child like ... That is what I see..

I have been to Cascais. They are not poor any longer. The fish restaurants near those boats costs a fortune. :(

I've eaten in quite a few restaurants in Cascais, and agree some are very expensive. However, there can be a world of difference between what the fishermen earn from the fish they catch, and what the restaurateurs earn from the meals they sell.

I first went to Cascais in 1960,I was stopping at the Hospidal Britanico in the Rua Saraivia Du Carvalho in Lisbon, were I was domiciled for 7 weeks. Two priests from Merseyside took myself and another Distressed British Seaman for a day out ,this included a run to the unused Portugese Olympic stadium,a run along the coast, from Belem through to Estoril and Cascais. The poverty then was very visible, ragged children and gaunt faced men and women.Cascais had very little tourism as we now know it,the biggest houses belonged to the British families who ran the wine and port estates and European royalty. Estoril was the province of the international jet set, there absolutely no package tourists then. Whilst walking on the beach in Estoril ,the priest in their soutanes ,Robin in his naval rig and myself in an out fit I had purchased in Lisbon, we passed a group of rich Brits picnicking upon the sands and they looked aghast at Robin in his ratings outfit. One cashmere jumper wearing grandee took me by the elbow and asked me in an upper class drawl "I say ,what is he doing here?" pointing toward Robin as he spoke. I repied "Oh we have just arrived on a package tour" And his face went white with shock. He fled back to his friends and muttered something ,gesturing towards us as he was talking ,and they fled the beach. The older priest said that I had been very naughty, but he liked it . They thought the revolution had arrived.

Who said that the german soul was unromantic? This fantasy castle was a poem in stone conceived by a German Prince for his Portugese Princess. It still reeks of his love for his Bride today.....................
