A WIRELESS revolution that will enable cameras to zoom in on crime and anti-social behaviour hotspots is to be given the go-ahead in Liverpool this week.
Telecom giant BT has named the city to take part in a pilot scheme that will allow people to use hand-held computers and laptops anywhere in the city centre.
Last night the city council's executive member for central services Councillor Richard Marbrow said it would also help improve security in the city.
He said: "This really will put Liverpool at the forefront of wireless technology.
"It will enable people in the city centre to access computers without the need for any wires, but it also offers much more.
"Because the system will be wireless we will be able to install CCTV cameras instantly and have them up and running quickly.
"It will enable us to monitor emergency road works, or hot spots for crime and anti-social behaviour, gathering video evidence.
"Initially the system will start in the city centre but we want to see it spread across the city, particularly to north Liverpool where there will be a lot of regeneration work."
Hundreds of wi-fi devices will be hidden in street furniture, with BT paying the millions of pounds needed to cover a wide area of central Liverpool.
The city council will earn thousands from the annual rent BT will pay for the use of council owned property, such as lampposts. more (http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/liverpooldailypost/news/regionalnews/tm_headline=city-to-help-pioneer-the-country%2Ds-wi%2Dfi-revolution%26method=full%26objectid=18086960%26pag e=2%26siteid=50061-name_page.html)....

The small city I lived in when I was in Florida was the first in the USA to have public wi-fi.

It had a few glitches but I am told it is running well now. They don't use it for surveilance, they saved enough on having service in all city offices and vehicles to make it a free service. I think the manufacturer did a special deal on installation to use it for advertising.

Liverpool was the first city to have TV cameras in the streets....in 1964. They were all around Lime St - tall posts with large elongated light grey/blue TV cameras on the top. In those days, Liverpool was equally full of violent dopes. All large dance halls had a few fights on the floor every Saturday night. Drunkeness was rife.

The thing about MacDonalds in the USA is that they are immaculately clean.

A bit late reading this thread, but if you feel the need to visit Milton Keynes Shopping Centre (as if!), bring your laptop. There are so many unsecured wifi networks that you can piggy back on for nowt.

True, Mcdonalds in the states are usually clean, the food is rubbish though, I don't mind the breakfast stuff at a push but never the burgers or fries.:037:

The city I lived in had total coverage, it is quite small though, I think about 15 square miles.
