View Full Version : Footbridge which crosses The Strand
ONE of the most notorious eyesores in the World Heritage Site, the footbridge which crosses The Strand, is to be demolished.
It will be replaced by two new super-crossings that will halt all traffic while pedestrians cross in safety to the Pier Head.
The footbridge was erected in the 1970s when Liverpool had a passion for walkways and so-called footpaths in the sky.
All of them have now been demolished, leaving the Strand bridge as the last of what was once aimed to be a city-wide network of high level walkways.
The footbridge was refurbished several years ago and has even figured in a television drama series. It was also occupied by Fathers for Justice in one of their publicity stunts. more (http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/0100news/0100regionalnews/tm_objectid=16811322%26method=full%26siteid=50061% 26headline=liverpool%2ds%2dlast%2dfootpath%2din%2d the%2dsky%2dto%2dbe%2ddemolished-name_page.html)

Is the footbridge still open at the moment? Might have to have a walk across it before they rip it down!
A.D.Williams 03-15-2006, 04:19 PM Yep still open, Jock. Watch out for the Goths though!

MissInformed 02-08-2007, 09:41 AM great pics
any updates on info about demolition anyone?
The article lifted for the OP mentions that these 1970s overhead footpaths have now all been demolished. How about the ones over Byrom Street, they're still up.
Anyone got any pictures of the footbridges that went over Roe street opposite the Royal Court and to Williamson square? The ones that lead to "The Bubbles".
marky 02-08-2007, 11:19 AM I like this footbridge and the ones near the Museum/University. I don't use pedestrian crossings if I can avoid them. Someone had knocked a hole in one of the panels the last time I crossed the Strand...a good place to take pics from.

snappel 02-08-2007, 11:23 AM The footbridge is a bit of a shed, and does get vandalised every weekend by the emo kids (who seem to live in there half the time), but it's useful. The problem with the existing crossings on the dock road is that you wait about 10 minutes to cross.
