There was a record shop about there up to a few months ago. I don`t know if it is still open but they only stocked old vinyl records.

Does anyone else recall the proper hi-fi shop which used to be at that top end of the street on the same side a bit further up?

Hairy Records is the one at the top. It used to be further down opposite (about) Rennie's Art Shop.

I seem to remember Virgin records being in Hardman St. near O'Connors when they first started. I could be wrong but I don't think I am,old timers disease hasn't taken over completely yet. :)

Yes Shytalk, there was a record shop in Hardman st, but it was a branch of "Probe" records, (one of three)and is now a pub! As Steve F says,Virgin started off in Bold St,(I remember the big cushions on the ground floor, for spacing out on, man !)then Dawson way, in St. John's precinct, then Clayton Sqr, then....? where did it go? Also, you remember O'Connor's, did you frequent the place yourself ? My favourite pub,ever:PDT_Aliboronz_24:

No Steve, didn't frequent the place. The monotone rhymeless poetry scene was just not for me. :PDT_Aliboronz_24:

My fave record shops were Cut price records and Probe. There also ued to be a decent record shop next to Probe.

Do you mean on the next block up from the bombed out church, next to the public toilets? I remember this being a record shop too in the late 1970s, old-timers disease has just snatched its name from my memory and I'd be grateful if somebody could remind me.
If it is the same place, the pub was called Hannah's Bar until it closed for refurbishment earlier this year.

No-one else got a memory cell containing that info ? Would have been mid/late 80's.

And regarding record shops, didn't the Classical one from up near Seel Street (?) move to Bold Street for a while ? What was that called ?

I don't remember a proper hi-fi shop around there, and at that time I would have been up and down Bold St just about every day. Any idea what is on the same spot now?

Backtracks was between Probe and the White Star, up a few stairs. Mostly second-hand records I think.

I think you might have got it as I do recall an Art shop....also an antiques shop called Lionels or something beginning with L....run by a very very strange looking chap....:shock:he used to stand outside his shop and stare off into the distance rubbing his chin...used to look quite creepy.....

It think it was on the corner at the top on the right hand side opposite a Russian restaurant on the adjacent corner (?). Used to always have a set of Moth Pre/Power amps in the window. (Furniture shop now ?)

OK, I know where you mean now. The Russian restaurant is now the Soul Cafe, and on the opposite corner is Zen furniture. Still can't remember a hifi shop there. Mind you, I can't remember what I ate for breakfast either.

That's the one, but on reflection, maybe it wasn't a branch of Probe, but Geof Hughes of same, had some connection with it!

yes,I remember it. I bought one of the first Musical Fidelity A1 integrated amps from there in the early 80's. The owner was called Colin IIRC(he ran the place with his wife). Was it called About Hi Fi? I used to go in quite a lot back then

While we're discussing Bold Street, I was in Asha's restaurant last time I was visiting. I hadn't been in since I used to eat there regularly with my girlfriend. Surprisingly it was still run by the same chap, but he was saying that all the area was being demolished.

All in all, it seems to go that you don't know what you've got 'til its gone,

John

About Hi-Fi - that rings a bell, yes. Can't picture it though.

I'll be quiet now, since I'm not contributing much!
