Liverpool's ferries across the Mersey could be sailing from the Isle of Man terminal following the sinking of a landing terminal.

Operator Merseytravel is in talks with the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company to share its terminal in Liverpool.

Mersey Ferries' cross-river services will be suspended over the weekend, although cruise services will operate between Seacombe and Woodside.

It is hoped services will resume in the early part of next week.

"We remain in close discussion with Mersey Docks and Harbour Company and the Isle of Man Steam Packing Company about shared use of the Isle of Man terminal," said Councillor Mark Dowd, chairman of Merseytravel.

"The safety of passengers must come first, so we have had to suspend Mersey Ferries' services to Liverpool again this weekend," he added.

"The normal cruise service will be running on the river from Seacombe and Woodside, but will not call at the Pier Head." Source (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/merseyside/4772074.stm)

How those days are long gone  .. that's when the areas like Tuebrook, Anfield, Walton, etc, were 'normal' - normal clean pavements, normal environment, normal busses with no slashed seats and weed smoking deadheads ; no filth and litter, no vandalism, shops didn't have to batten down the hatches after closing time every evening - no steel shutters and mesh grills.

Where did it all go wrong ?

New ferries landing stage is towed into the Mersey
May 9 2006
By Larry Neild, Daily Post

http://images.icnetwork.co.uk/upl/icliverpool/may2006/8/4/18488393-B3FA-7740-ADE150FE4605E77C.jpg

A NEW landing stage has arrived on Merseyside to replace the sunken Mersey Ferries terminal at the Pier Head.

The Mersey Docks and Harbour Company has hired the 200ft long pontoon as a temporary landing stage until a permanent replacement is built.

The pontoon, named Skyline Barge 15, left Rotterdam a week ago and was towed by tugs to the Mersey, arriving at the weekend. The pontoon sits on ducks-feet shaped four legs, known as spuds with the stage rising and falling with the tide.

It is now undergoing preparation work in Liverpool's West Alexandra Docks, and is expected to be taken to the Pier Head later this week.

For the time being it will be attached to the northern edge of the Isle of Man Steam Packet stage, and is expected to be brought into use next week.

Marine engineers will then start work on removing the remainder of the sunken landing stage that went down earlier this year during freak weather conditions. When the debris is removed, the new pontoon will be moved to the southern end of the IoM stage, where it will remain until a permanent landing stage is completed, probably in 18 months time.

The arrival of Skyline will be a welcome relief for Mersey Ferries who until now are having to share the IoM landing stage.

It has meant that on occasions ferry journeys have had to be cancelled because Irish Sea ferries are tied up at the stage.

The old landing stage, in use for around 40 years, sank two months ago when one of the lowest tides of the year then one of the highest, occurring with hours, strained the booms

holding the stage to the river wall. That led to the whole structure sinking beneath the waves.

The temporary resting place for the new replacement stage, closer to Princes Dock, will eventually be needed for the new cruise liner terminal which is currently being built in Birkenhead.

That extension is about 1,000 ft long and will attract between 40 and 50 cruise liners to the Liverpool waterfront every year.

Next stage in history of ferries starts taking shape

Gill Critchley - and plenty of onlookers - witness the temporary landing stage arriving at Liverpool's Pier Head

THEY are known the world over - thanks partly to Gerry and the Pacemakers - and are one of Liverpool's top tourist attractions.

But since a freak storm earlier this year caused havoc to timetables, ferries across the Mersey have suddenly become a lot less popular.

Transport bosses on Merseyside believe passenger numbers are down a third as a result of the storm, which caused the landing stage on Liverpool's waterfront to sink.

So the arrival yesterday of a replacement pontoon comes as a welcome relief for ferry officials.

THE operation to remove the eyesore Pier Head landing stage is finally set to begin - five months after it sank.

The sight of the semi-submerged structure still sprawled across the waterfront has dismayed tourists and Liverpool councillors.

The pontoon broke into pieces in March when freak tides strained the booms and shattered the 40-year-old stage.

Today, the Mersey Docks and Harbour Company, which owns the pontoon, said specialist engineers were due to begin work in August.

The operation could take up to 10 weeks.

Labour leader Cllr Joe Anderson has called the delay unacceptable and says the Pier Head has been left with an eyesore.

"I'd like to know why it's taken so long to sort out as the sinking happened in March and it now looks a mess.

"The waterfront is one of Liverpool's main attractions and its a sour sight for visitors when they go down to the river."

One man was astonished to see parts of the landing stage poking out of the water and resting on the stone wall of the Pier Head as he went on a cruise from Liverpool to Llandudno this month.

He said: "What a first impression to our esteemed and welcome visitors. This city seems so adept at shooting itself in the foot."

The Mersey Docks and Harbour Company says negotiations with contractors to remove the rest of the landing stage have been ongoing.

A spokesman said: "We have to ensure the right methods are in place for safety reason.

"It's a complex procedure and there a number of engineering challenges."

Along with the half-attached landing stage, the debris which broke off into the Mersey is held in position by wires and is expected to be removed soon.

A 200ft temporary pontoon has been hired from Holland until a permanent replacement is built next to the Isle of Man Steam Packet stage.

Mammoet the company contracted, by Peel Ports, to lift the sunken George's Landing Stage have abandoned the attempt. The contractor will report to Peel with suggestions on how to remove the debris.

I wonder why, instead of reporting as to how difficult the job is, they don't just impliment their own suggestions?

Any delay could/would see a number of cruise ship visits, planned for the 2007 season, cancelled.

It's pretty pathetic that they leave the sunken landing stage like that for months! Waterways might be able to confirm but as far as I know the original landing stage that I knew in the Fifties and Sixties never sank and it's only been the possibly less-well built new landing stage that has had this problem.

You can see the new walkway which I think will lead down to the new landing stage, or will it connect directly to and entrance in the side of the new liners? Don't know really but its quite long.

They're definitely working hard down there right now.
