View Full Version : Liverpool One Shopping Area [Completed Phases]
AS A RESULT OF THE PARADISE STREET/ LIVERPOOL ONE DEVELOPMENT.
STREET NAMES:
Wall Street on the old walls of Liverpool Castle.
Custom House Place, formerly Custom House Lane.
Thomas Steers Way has been called “Discovery Axis” during the development period.
Paradise Place is a broad extension, off to one side, of Paradise Street.
The Compass where Grosvenor is considering inlaying the four points of the compass in the paving.
Keys Court will feature a public walkway through the building to link Church Street and School Lane.
The Zig Zag is the covered space four storeys above Paradise Street.
The Terrace is effectively an extension of the Park, across the bridges over South John Street.
In Chavasse Park there will be a memorial to the Chavasse Family in a small “copse” at the top of the park will be an informal space that can be used for various arranged and impromptu events.
The Pool will tell the story of the birth of modern Liverpool, from its medieval shoreline, to the Castle on the sandstone outcrop and the emergence of The Pool – the first non-tidal commercial dock.
Kenyon’s Steps is the walkway along the northern side of Chavasse Park.
Blundell Lane is the courtyard between the Bluecoat’s new wing, BBC Radio studios and Friends Meeting House. It is named after Bryan Blundell, who built Bluecoat Chambers as a residential charity school for poor children.
College Court are the alleys and courtyard alongside the historic warehouses and Stanley Building.
David Lewis Street named after Lewis’s founder who had shops in Bold Street and Ranelagh Street.
Sugar House Steps between Customs House Place and the Park. On the site of Liverpool’s first sugar house.
BUILDING NAMES:
One Park West.
The Bling Building on Hanover Street.
Edward Rushton House, on the site of former hospital for the blind, founded by Edward Rushton.
Gradwell Street Car Park.
Liverpool Hilton.
Some of the names set to be recognised as integral parts of Liverpool include The Bling Building, The Zig Zag and The Terrace.
New streets and buildings will both hark back to the city’s past and point to a bold future.
The £1bn project will open up the heart of the city centre improving pedestrian access to iconic destina-tions such as The Albert Dock and Chavasse Park. Once new names have been taken in, navigating the centre will be a simpler task, accord-ing to Grosvenor, the developers.
The project is developing new and existing streets in order to maintain the historic identity of the city.
“Wall Street”, for example, is named after the walls of Liverpool Castle and also the historical trad-ing and business links between Liverpool and America. Thomas Steers Way is named after England’s first major civil engineer and form-er city mayor who designed and built The Old Dock – the world’s first wet dock.
In the early 1700s he built several docks in the city as well as St George’s Church on the site of the Liverpool Castle.
Blundell Lane is the courtyard between the new wing of the Blue-coat, BBC Radio studios and Friends Meeting House. It is named after sea captain Bryan Blundell who built Bluecoat Chambers as a residential charity school for poor children.
Regenerated streets include South John Street, which will become the main high street within the Liver-pool One development. It will boast two tiers of retail on both sides as well as a terrace overlooking the newly landscaped Chavasse Park.
The Zig Zag four storeys above Paradise Street features extraordin-ary stair, escalator and bridge links from Paradise Street, South John Street and the Park.

And utterly bugger all about Joseph Williamson. Still buried in the plot of land that was the graveyard for St Thomas'.

And utterly bugger all about Joseph Williamson. Still buried in the plot of land that was the graveyard for St Thomas'.
I would have said it was because there was already a Williamson St and Square in the city centre and the council are relucant to allow too many variations of a theme as it can cause confusion for the emergency services. But as they are allowing Blundell Lane and Paradise Place then they havent been too strict on this theme so it is a shame he hasnt been honoured.

Not if they called it "Joseph Street" or "Mole Street".

Excellent, ADW.
I took a few snaps.
Will post some.
Paradise Street is spacious enough, but the rest is very claustrophobic.
(I hate crowds, too).
Difficult to get good shots of the 'architecture'.

I'm just uploading mine now. it was chocker when we arrived about half 12. hubby enjoyed the fashion show (women in lingerie)
he was really impressed with the place. which for him is summat.
the fountain is fab. couldn't see the old dock wall too well as the light was reflecting off the top of the glass, but at least it's been left untouched.
the bridge between the Q park and John Lewis is bit odd it moves as buses go underneath.
overall I think it's fantastic. it's amazing to see so many new buildings and not as much glass as I thought there would be.
the workies should be very proud :034:

Great pics all!
Was anyone there at 10 when the veil was lowered by Lord Hulme and Warren Bradley??
The speeches were interesting, I was able to video them both...it may be of some use one day!
Interestingly, I watched Granada and NWT. I found that Granada was very much positive about the whole affair, but NWT was able to put a downer on things, they were far more pessimistic.
Anyway, heres a few I took around 10...

Yo! gets a 'mention' on the Liverpool One Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liverpool_One) page.
Can't wait to have a look at it all on Saturday! Although I actually think the best bits will be in the St Peters Lane/ Hanover St areas. Ok, there's no Selfridges or Harvey Nichols (maybe Liverpool will eventually be able to pull them in), but it just seems unbelievable that they've managed to create almost half a city centre in 4 years! I think the Duke and Grosvenor have to be praised on their vision for this, and for seeing it though. They've made a massive loss on it after all.
Bristol is another city I have connections with, and it has been interesting watching their Broadmead development taking shape at the same time as L1. It's a smaller vision than L1 overall, but has quite similar ambitions (although I think they've gone for more of a mall that open streets). Check it out here.

looks nice enough. How it blends in with the area I don't know as I've never been to the centre of Bristol.
this line did make me smile though Over 200 new homes integrated into the development, including 24 affordable homes
so that makes 176 that are unaffordable?! :unibrow:
I guess most places are having to do this sort of thing now to keep up with neighbouring cities/towns that have done the same thing.
I'd like to see some more independent shops coming in though. the so called 'big' stores are fine in moderation but then every 'high street' starts looking very samey.
I'm surprised Selfridges didn't come in, but if JL and Debs took the biggest plots then they may have felt they'd got 2nd best.
but then what do I know. I'm not the brightest light in the box.

No!!! You walk too fast, Max.

I walk fast too and when i'm in a rush and know exactly where i'm going and want to get in and out and have it done with, some people seem to be going so slow as to be going backwards - put there as an obstacle to get on my nerves.
However, in this case, with the occassion of the opening etc, it's better to give yourself time to look and take it in - not particularly to shop.

Or perhaps supply Litter Bins, which didn't seem to be much in evidence except one near the stage/steps.
Yes, I know any caring person would take their litter home if they can't find a bin.
Always been a fast walker In town, like to not spend too long around shops. A lot of people slow me down walking too slow, can understand elderly and disabled people moving slow but able bodied people should move more.
Guess one day I might try to make a good photo out of the place but I don't like most of the architecture.

Well like my signature says these things take time. Does anyone remember this ? What happened to this awful scheme. This comes from the ''Liverpool city centre plan'' of 1965. Am so glad that this never got off the ground what we have now if far better.

That proposal sounds exactly the same as what we have now...but minus the concrete. It talks about escalators connecting with various streets, we have this now where South John Street is connected to Paradise Street ect. A further similar idea is the Arcade, although what has been built now is a slight twist on the concept.
That proposal might of made a better photo though.

To me its just a bland 60s shoping center, with flats on top very much like bootle strand. If it had been built, am sure it would now be as bad the strand. nothing to inspire anyone there, unless you like photos of smack-heads.
Saw the strand for the first time In my life last February when I got the train to Crosby. Awful tower blocks and cheap looking buildings, Bell Vale shopping centres worse.
Liverpool hire some terrible architectures over the last 40 years. The old buildings are brilliant and we should of maintained a reputation of great buildings.

Be interesting to see what the impact is upon the rest of the city centre and if it pans out once the party is over. Would also have been nice to have seen more Liverpudlian labour employed in its construction.

true, especially considering the security in there. you can actually see the security room with the guard sitting in there watching the screens. good deterrent that. plus each level seems to have at least 1 guard wandering about from what I saw and there's CCTV cameras everywhere.
perhaps Q should take over the other city car parks. especially the one on Mount Pleasant. one of my step daughters was quite unnerved using it the other week.

No Lindi, but I'd rather spend my money in Liverpool anyway. The trip to the trafford C would cost that and abit in petrol anyway.
It's 90p on the ordinary streets for half an hour, and I wonder how many just put the pound coin in because they have no silver, cos you get no change.

Was in the passenger seat of a friends car yesterday and we took a trip from Upper Parly Street along the Dock Road to get to Bootle and I wanted to see what the new Liverpool One building would look like from this side as I've not seen it at that angle.
What a bloody eyesaw. It takes up all of one side of the road and detracts from looking left at the Albert Dock buildings. It's as ugly as sin, doesn't fit in when you are faced with the 3 Graces in the same eye scan and will date terribly in 10 years.
The whole road seems darker as a result and it just looks totally out of place.
I'm sure the inside is very swish but what a monstrosity. :PDT_Xtremez_42:

Everything in this photo was demolished.
Was the pub called the Criterion?
It was rather rough, and I seem to remember a murder.

The pub was the Triton Philip and was where we had a few, over the road from my wedding reception in the moat house in 1988. We also used to go in it as part of our Paradise street pub crawl now and again which included the Beehive, the Eagle and the hotel bar.

It was my cousin Ronnie James who was murdered there. He was landlord of the 5th Ave pub (formerly the Triton). He was attacked and killed by a burgler after closing time. My cousin's wife and 3 year old child were upstairs in the living quarters when it happened. The local news was full of it at the time - and for quite a while there were whole pages and double page spreads about the murder - my cousin Ronnie's face seemed to be everywhere you looked. The burgler was eventually arrested and put in prison. I can see his face now - and we won't forget that face.
the Pub was closed for some time while police and forensics were in there.
I remember when a new manager took over and he was interviwed about how it felt to take over a pub where there was such a brutal murder.
My cousin died in a struggle fighting for his life - he was a 6 ft guy and no pushover, he had fought back. He was stabbed numerous times in this vicious attack.
R I P Ronnie James.

Liverpool ONE boss blasts litter blight

THE man behind Liverpool ONE (http://www.liverpool-one.com/) today begged people not to drag the shopping development into the same mire as the rest of the city.
Grosvenor boss Rod Holmes attacked the filth blighting parts of the city saying it could undermine the success of the £1bn retail centre.
He warned that shoppers were already dropping litter in Liverpool ONE in much the same way that rubbish overflows around the rest of the streets.

The filth blighting parts of the city?.... rubbish overflows around the rest of the streets?
S h i t happens, as they say. Busy crowded places generate a degree of rubbish as a matter of course, including Mr Holme's precious Liverpool One. Perhaps he should fork out for for a few more cleaners if he's so upset by the dirty Scousers. Cheeky b a s t a r d.
I believe a whole new load of bins are scheduled for there after complaints. Where there's fast food outlets, there'll be rubbish - he can't have it both ways, at least it means the masses are there and probably not all scousers.

So it's ok with you to drop sh*te wherever you fancy because someone else will pick up after you?
Liverpool is one of THE worst cities in the UK for litter and that includes from 'scousers'. I have personally seen dirty scousers walk out of Macdonalds to throw litter in the street and then go back in to finish their meal. Do you think it is ok to encourage this outrageous and filthy behaviour by providing more cleaners to pick up the mess? They should have pride in themselves and take the responsibility to look after their city. You have to take responsibility for this scum if you condone or accept their behaviour
The council is hell bent on trying to keep the city clean against a tidal wave of people who just don't seem to care. The council spent over a quarter of a million last year just trying to pick up gum. Money that could have been better spent on services.
This man is not from Liverpool and yet he is trying to make your city a better, more attractive place. He has pride in your city. Where is your pride in your city? In the gutter?
Grow up, accept the criticism and do something about it. Complain and shout. Make it unacceptable. Moan at people when they drop stuff, don't moan at people who try to change the city for the better.

Dunno about over there but over here fast food outlets have a contract with the council that they will undertake picking up of litter within a 1.5km radius of the restaurant site as part of their franchise license, also kids are brought up with a teaching of taking all litter home with them if they are on school trips, footy trips etc....... a lot of the problem is how you were brought up to look after and respect your surroundings

Well, I'm a born and bred Scouser and I love the city with a passion but I absolutely detest the litter. I'm embarassed by it and the city could show off it's beauty so much more if mindless idiots didn't keep disposing of their rubbish all over the city. I really hope this campaign against the litter helps because last Saturday Williamson Square was filthy and I'd hate Liverpool One to turn into a grot spot, we should have pride (afterall aren't scousers meant to be known for their pride) and try to keep the city a wonderful, inviting place. It's simple with me, if I have a piece of rubbish and there's no bin in sight or the nearest is full, I keep hold of it and put it in the next bin I come across or take it home.
Btw, Lindy, I'm so sorry to hear aout your cousin. May he rest in peace and my thoughts go to you and all the family.
Also, just want to add I'm really impressed with Liverpool One so far!

I quite like the new shopping centre. Theres lots of sandstone used (or what appears to be sandstone) and i dunno about you but for me its not like most shopping centres i've been to. For one its an open air shopping centre. The architecture is alot different to say the trafford centre or the bull ring. And i don't know many shopping centres that have a big park, a heritage site on display, and still manage to fit in with the rest of the city. I think the buildings are sensitive enough. The ones on paradise street echo those on church and lord street and the main shopping walk if you will still keeps the lines and building heights from the end of the road by Debanems (or how ever you spell it). I think they've done a pretty good job.

Couldn't agree more! What makes it unique above all else is that it isn't a shopping centre as such. It is a redevelopment of a huge part of the city centre which incorporates the existing road layout. There is no big roof that covers it all and all the buildings are individually designed, some by world class architects. As you say, how many ' shopping centres ' can you name with a park in the middle of it? Job extremely well done!:handclap:

Well everything really. Architecture is neither a painting nor is it a visual art alone. It is visual but has to experienced to be appreciated. In short you have to be there.
Accepting that you can't be there yourself, I don't think it's on to offer categorical opinion based on pictures alone.
Even if it were, where are the other 'centres' that you have seen that are just like this? which one has a park? which is a series of streets? and all the other things that people have commented on and liked.
You have to feel sorry for all those who have spent their time trying to make a difference to Liverpool for some to dismiss it as ordinary on the basis of a 'few' pictures.

I can appreciate Manhattan's skyscrapers without visiting the place.
Liverpool One's park could justifiably be called a "roof garden", and one wonders if it would have been created if there hadn't already been a park on the previous site.
As for the streets.
Compare the present with an old map, and most of the old streets have been obliterated.
I bet everybody will get lost when the other side of Paradise Street opens in September.
Having said all that, I quite like it, if only because the buses now take me all the way into town, and Paradise Street is a short cut to the rest of town.

My only grumble is that, for north enders, it is a bit of hike over to it. Our busses put us off by the Royal Court, so it is quite a walk over from there.
The next nearer stop is to get off near the town hall and walk through.
Both ways as broad as they are long.

But when you go to Manhattan you find out what it's really like.
The 'park' was in fact a bit of grassed-over bomb site. These are the only lost streets and they were lost in the war. This is now a proper park and a real civic amenity. Actually I would have preferred it to be built up, replacing the lost streets, but imagine the howls of protest at the loss of 5 acres of prime wasteland!
The other side of Paradise Street has one new street - New Manesty's Lane - if people are lost, then they would have been lost before.
I think it's a great achievement after years of oppoprtunities to moan about 'broken promises' that's about to turn the whole city round (as well as make your bus journey easier)

I've been to manhatten, the only pleasent bit from my perspective is from a ferry, ellis island, the statue of liberty or from the top of a sky scraper. Walking around new york itself your constantly in shadows, bins and binbags line the roads as there are no real allyways or space for refuse. The only real option is to get the underground which is fantastic. Come night time you can't really see any of those spectacular buldings untill your standing practically right underneath them that and the rats come out to play. Having said that individually the buildings when either viewed from afar or from the top of a sky scraper are spectacular and the facilities like the met and the natural history museam and the South Street Seaport are second to none.
I guess in all its down to personal taste. I prefered Washinton DC to new york in terms of architecture mainly because i could appreciate the whole building from many angles not just. Having said that also, interms of a skyline new york is stunning but a sky-line and architecture is two completly different things in my opinion.

Manhattan is intimidating and maybe it's meant to be, to be 'impressive'. It's not Liverpool. A Liverpool Manhattan would be open and friendly at street level, reflecting the character of the population.
I don't think Wirral Waters or Liverpool Waters understand this... yet?
A skyline can be designed as one 'building' as much as it's individual buildings can be. Design controls are used in New York and other cities (Sydney) to deliberately design and sculpt the skyline.
For me, Liverpool needs both; a great skyline to express its ambition and international outlook and great, urban but friendly streets.
Hello strangers :PDT_Piratz_26:
Not posted on here for a while now (I was spending too long on the www and not enough on the "real world"!) but I thought I'd pop back to voice my opinion on Liverpool One after taking such a big interest in its construction.
I went there on the grand opening day and i was made up with it - 4 weeks later I still am, I'm no shopaholic by any means but I enoy a stroll round the "new" streets and stores at lunchtime. I've made good use of the massive staircase by John Lewis's to sit in the sunshine (when we have some), and I can't wait for the park to open in a few months.
Comparing South John St to Church St yes it's a helluva lot narrower, but somehow I don't see it as claustrophobic even with the bridges and escalators and staircases - it's narrow, but being on 2 levels (3 when the rest is open) it's not too crowded.
In the last few months of construction I was dubious about some of the architecture, seen from my work (police hq) some of the buildings looked a bit "simple", uninspiring, and angular-for-the-sake-of-it but now, up-close they look better.
All in all, I'm made up with it, big :handclap: to all the designers, planners and builders (the ones still at work looked made up on opening day!)
BUT - my only let-down so far - what's with the new WH Smiths - it's tiny! Why shut the huge Church St one and move to a pokey, cramped little place!
Oh, and, it was me that put the link to YoLiverpool on the Wikipedia page :PDT_Piratz_26:
perhaps Q should take over the other city car parks. especially the one on Mount Pleasant. one of my step daughters was quite unnerved using it the other week.
I noticed yesterday, the Q Park logo is on the top of the old Hanover St carpark now. That place is a dump, I hope they do a good job of tidying it up.

Did I hear it was going to be demolished, and isn't the new building opposite a car park?
That's what I thought - thinking about it, I saw the Q Park logo sticking up above the rooftops from the Chavasse Park steps and thought it was the Hanover St one, but it may well be the Gradwell St one. I'll investigate further :ninja:

Sites 21 & 22
The corner of Hanover Street and Seel Street on the site of the former Seel Street multi-storey and ground level car parks, which are to be demolished.
URBAN FORM
Multi storey buildings restoring the buiding line of Hanover Street and presenting active frontages to Hanover Street and Seel Street. Of particular importance is the relationship with the adjacent listed public house and the way in which the Hanover Street/Seel Street corner terminates the vista from College Lane. The layout will encourage natural grade level linkages into Rope Walks towards Concert Square.
USES
All blocks accommodate retail/or catering use at ground level.
Site 22
Between Seel Street and Fleet Street.
URBAN FORM
A sequence of 4-5 storey buildings in keeping with the surrounding Rope Walks scale. Small scale courts utilise the fall across the site to create interesting level changes and define terraced areas linking Hanover Street with Concert Square.
USES
Principally bar/restaurant use at grade level linking with terraced areas in small courtyards. Residential and studio/office uses at high level.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS
An entrance to the underground service area beneath site 21 to be incorporated.
MATERIALS
Suitable materials for the Rope Walks context as site 19.

Took my first visit to Liverpool One this morning. What a fabulous place!
We arrived at the QPark and walked through the joining bridge thingy into John Lewis.
From there we had a mooch around and came out by Chavasse Park. Excellent. It was clear at this stage how the project has opened up and brought the waterfront back into the spotlight rather than it being away and cut off.
It reminded me of the Trafford Centre at first glance but it felt different, the TC will always have that detached feeling away from anything else whereas the Liverpool connects Lord Street and Church Street together and still feels part of the City of Liverpool.
I felt proud to see so much good stuff, people cleaning, polite and well-spoken sales assistants and managers/ supervisers [all Liverpudlians, the ones I heard anyway]. I was particularly pleased to hear many other dialects and accents from people who would not have normally shopped in Liverpool [if u know what I mean].
Mrs Kev was very impressed and seeme to forget where she was until we reached the other end when she spotted The Hard Days Night Beatles Hotel :)
We had our lunch in John Lewis and again, what a fab place to eat. The sun was shining, there was a nice feel about it all. From one side you could see the waterfront, the other side was the Radio City tower between buildings still under contruction, even that was great to look at as you can see the potential of the other phases to suceed in bring people into the area for shopping and entertainment.
I couldn't find the old dock viewing area though. The one at street level was too dark.
Driving away made me realise how far this project has come and how better the City Centre is for all the construction projects going on around.

THE second phase of Liverpool One will open tomorrow with an all-day festival and a royal visit.
Princess Anne will unveil a plaque at noon, signalling the opening to the public of the remodelled five-acre Chavasse Park and a leisure terrace with a range of bars and restaurants.
The ?1bn shopping development will also welcome Cherie Blair, the wife of former prime minister Tony Blair, who will return to her home town with actor father Tony Booth.
All the streets and roads within the Paradise Street scheme will be open for the first time since building work on Europe?s biggest retail project began four years ago.
The second phase will add a 14-screen Odeon cinema, the new Chavasse Park and 560 new car parking spaces in Q-Park?s Gradwell Street multi-storey car park.
Tomorrow?s opening will bring the number of shops to more than 160 and unveil the leisure terrace, which project director Rod Holmes dubbed ?Liverpool?s living room?.
Once Princess Anne has opened the scheme, shoppers and visitors will be treated to an all-day street festival, featuring fashion shows, street artists and musicians.
The stars will be out early tomorrow, with appearances by actress Jennifer Ellison, singer Natasha Hamilton and Apprentice finalist Alex Wotherspoon during the day.
The finale will be a 10pm firework display lasting almost 10 minutes launched from the rooftops of the new Hilton hotel and 600-apartment One Park West buildings, as well as the nearby docks, visible for miles.
Liverpool One chief executive Joanne Jennings said: ?We cannot wait for the firework finale.
?It will be a fitting climax to the event, the ultimate show finale to wrap up another chapter in the unfolding story of Liverpool One.?
The opening of phase one of Liverpool One on May 29 was attended by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.

I disagree. I think the real denegration of his name was the truly horrendous smack-head den that was the previous park. Transforming the area to one that will be involved far more in everyday life will bring people much closer to the memory of Noel. Previously it was nothing to many but a cut through to the docks or somewhere to mug someone when you ran out of drug money.
I think though that the statue currently in Abercromby Square should be located here to reinforce the reasoning behind the name.

I could be wrong, but there wasnt ever anything there to commemmorate him was there? Other than the name. As they have kept the name Chavasse Park they haven't reduced the tribute. They have provided names for specific elements within the park e.g. Kenyon's Steps, but there are themselves tributes to other folk who have played a role in the city. At least I think so anyway.

Final piece in the jigsaw to complete Liverpool One
Around a billion pounds of investment paid off yesterday ? as David Bartlett reports
THE opening of the second phase of Liverpool One came to a spectacular end with a firework display last night.
The Princess Royal braved the rain in Liverpool to officially open the ?1bn development.
The Duke of Westminster, Britain?s third richest man, whose company Grosvenor is behind the 42-acre scheme, spoke of his pride at building Liverpool One.
Yesterday saw 24 more shops, restaurants and bars open to the public as well as the new revamped five acre Chavasse Park and a 14-screen Odeon cinema.
Grosvenor also announced that 11 brands have committed to take space in the centre, including Tesco, which will have a store in Hanover Street.
It follows the first phase opening at the end of May, since when footfall in the city centre has increased by 33%.
Last night, Liverpool council leader Warren Bradley said it was now vital the city worked hard to consolidate its new economic position.
The Duke started proceedings on the Sugar House steps to Chavasse Park yesterday shortly after noon. He told the crowd: ?Four years ago, it was in desperate need of regeneration. It was in part a wasteland between Liverpool?s waterfront and the rest of the city.
He said he was confident Liverpool One would play a vital role in making the city world class once again restoring its place in the premier league of retail destinations.
The Duke admitted there had been challenges in the project, but thanked developers Laing O?Rouke and Balfour Beatty for their work.
He also singled out former council leader Cllr Mike Storey and ex-council chief executive Sir David Henshaw for their vision, before thanking current leader Cllr Warren Bradley and chief executive Colin Hilton.
?We most of all thank you, the people of Liverpool, for putting up with the disruption and access restrictions.
?We hope you will agree it has been worth the wait.?
Princess Anne unveiled a plaque for the official opening before joining VIPs for a reception in a marquee on Chavasse Park.
THROUGHOUT the day, visitors were entertained by street performers and fashion shows, culminating with a firework spectacular at around 10pm.
Joanne Jennings, chief executive of Liverpool One, said: ?It?s wonderful to finally be able to give people full access to the areas that have been under construction for so long.
?Liverpool One has been a phenomenal success for us, the retailers, and the city as a whole since phase one launch back in May.
?We know people have responded positively to Liverpool One?s retail offering when we first launched.
?I can only hope they love it even more when they get to experience the beautiful Chavasse Park and its attending leisure offerings.?
New stores which opened yesterday included Fred Perry, L?Occitane, Urban Outfitters, USC, Radley, Karen Millen, G Star, Lakeland and a Crocs Store.
While restaurants and cafes which opened on the terrace yesterday included Yo! Sushi, Wagamama, Zizzi, Pizza Hut, Las Iguanas, Caf? Rouge, Nando?s and Barburrito, as well as the Gourmet Burger Kitchen and Korova Bar. Pete Lyons, manager of Las Iguanas, who grew up in Tuebrook, said he could not think of a better location for the Latin American restaurant.
?Liverpool One has resuscitated the city and completely woken us up. Although the park itself is small, it?s a version of New York?s Central Park and not something you expect to find in the middle of a city centre.
?The terrace is going to become very hip and trendy.?
SEE tomorrow?s paper to read about the return of the historic US bald eagle to Paradise Street.

One thing I noticed yesterday was that it seems to be a bit difficult to get to the leisure level from South John St (the one that opened in May). I didn't actually go in that street yesterday but from what I can remember there aren't any steps/lifts/escalators up. From what I gather the best you can do is using the lift by Debenhams and walk by the park and over the bridge or walking all the way round to Paradise and using the zig-zag stairs. There must be something I'm missing because it seems a little odd that it wouldn't be easier to get up there (I'm a lazy being!).

I thought that as well - hence I used the big escalator from Paradise street (no need to use those zig-zag stairs)
There is an escalator going down from by the Cafe Rouge to the 1st floor so that you can cross a bridge and then escape via Debenhams.
I agree that's it not the easiest of places to get to - oh well I'm sure we'll get used to it!

I think that i quite ambigious so I will rephrase it for people who have not been yet - there are escalators from South John Street first level to the top level outside the odeon, where the escalators from Paradise Street also go.

You can get to the escalator by walking through Keys Court in Church St,you can see the escalator just behind the zig zag staircase

Once again it looks as though the planners have demolished those features that make Liverpool unique, and replaced them with something that could be anywhere. When will they realise that if they want to attract people to the city they have to provide something they can't find elsewhere?
John
Once again it looks as though the planners have demolished those features that make Liverpool unique,
A part of town that know one ever visited, only passed through in a hurry? A part of town with an ugly carpark and old hotel?
I think Danensis goes back a little before your and my time Kev (definitely mine :))
I know the quiant buildings, pubs and warehouses around Canning Place, Redcross Street, South Castle Street, Litherland Alley and Ogdens Weint are close to some peoples hearts like those who worked there in the 60s before the area was decimated after lying derelict. My brother worked in Mercer Court when the Brown/Picton libraries stored their books there and he said it was a great bustling little area with the likes of the Trawler pub and Flying Scotsman.

I have two views on this development...it will be interesting to see how people view my own POV
Some people from my course now work in the new shops down the Lpool 1...one of them says "Its great...its like you aren't in Liverpool anymore when your walking through Chavasse Park"
To me...there is something very wrong if we have people liking Liverpool 1 for the fact that it doesn't feel like Liverpool. I think its very wrong for people who have been born and raised in this great city of ours, to feel as if they don't fit in with the new image of the city...or whats worse...don't recognize where they are.
However...the whole concept of mass-redevelopment is quintessentially Liverpool. We like things done on a big scale...we like doing something adventurous.
It will be interesting to see how it all matures. I hope it grows old gracefully...but will this ever compare to what we have lost??? Will this ever compare to the old Customs House?? Will this ever compare to the Sailors Home???
He talks about the new Musuem of Liverpool life too which Is looking horrible and over sized doesn't fit It with whats next to It at all.
The Liverpool one was a great Idea to build but It's just big blocks of glass and brick buildings with the odd colourful tiles.

Well, the people who say this are local...the quote was actually of a lad who lives in Swanside!
Your point of the blocks of glass and brick made me chuckle a little...as I was thinking the same thing myself.
Blocks of brick and glass Is norm In the redevelopment In Liverpool now.
The council who approve these things are descendants of Cain.

Haven't seen the new phase yet, but will be visiting again in a few weeks so will have a good look then. I love the first phase, and don't quite understand why some people are not happy with it. The whole development can only be good news for Liverpool. It will definitely bring people into the city, whether tourists or residents, and that's all good news for the local economy. It must have already provided many jobs, and no doubt will continue to do so. Many of them will be part time, and so the large student population will be pleased as it should make it easier for some of them to get a job while they are studying, again good for the local economy. The whole development has got to be better than letting the city centre become run down and derelict, as so many towns and cities are these days. Liverpudlians should be proud of a City Council with so much vision and style.
Well done Liverpool :handclap:
Gone are the days when Companies made a statement of wealth when building their headquarters here such as The Royal Liver friendly assurance or when the likes of Walker or William Brown pumped money into grand civic buildings - it's all done on a tight quick build budget now with the developers making the most of it. This IS 21st Century architecture - the likes of which you may have saw pictured back in the 1970s/80s when the year 2000 was in the futuristic distant future.

The ?1 billion pound cost of the Liverpool One project was totally paid for by private investment - the Grosvenor Company. Doing so reflects a growing confidence in the future of Liverpool: private companies don't put in that amount of money unless they expect to get something back, they're not charities. This is one of the first projects not to rely on EU, govn or council money and shows Liverpool standing on her own two feet.

Did anyone see the advert for Liverpool 1 after the X Factor last night? Very professional!
I have to admit I do quite like the marketing campaign for the centre. I wasn't fussed on the original one when phase 1 opened but the billboard and press adverts do look good; they don't really make sense but they do look quite... smooth! :D

The cons have promised to freeze council tax bills for 2 years if they get in - is that a con? :)
I'll tell you what I am surprised about though with all these stealth taxes about. The last time the council gave bandings to properties was in the 1990s. It's a wonder they haven't used google earth or something to snoop on who has had a conservatory or extension built to up the income.
Please delete this after reading in case it gives them any ideas. If not it will self destruct in 48 hours.

I wont go in so i have seen nothing, but im really glad that they have left a park there.
I think the park is bigger and better than before. I just remember a green space with a path running through it with a couple of park benches. They'd put a fun fair on it from time to time near the end of its life too.
We had our wedding photos took at the rear of the Moat House in 1988, which overlooked the park - but sadly overlooked Steers house too

The old "park" was little more than brick rubble with a thin layer of grass and soil and a path to the Albert Dock dating only from the early 1980's. The only connection to Noewl Chavasse was the name, which remains.
The new place is a million times better.
